If it hits critical mass, app-writers will just hard code the IP address. App-updates are easy and often enough that an IP address change wouldn't be a problem.

Mutiple addresses/geolocation could be done client side if they wanted, too.

Re: Sleep is a Good Thing(TM)

How else do you explain why the extremely high levels of CO2 identified tens of thousands of years ago, far higher than today's concentrations, did not result in an irreversible climate catastrophe?

CO2 is currently waaaaaaay higher than it's ever been in the last 800,000 years at least, as this handy little graph shows:

Re: Sleep is a Good Thing(TM)

Of course CO2 isn't bad for the planet, Bob, me old chum!

As Pompeo (the guy aptly named after a city made extinct by a natural disaster) said - Think of all those new trade routes opening up in the arctic! oh, and all those lovely 'freedom fossel fuels" we (*cough* American big corporations) can mine!

And of course, all that extra water won't have an effect on sea levels, because the planet will be hotter, so more of it will evaporate!

Checkmate, rational people!

Re: Whatever happened to three copies ?

If anyone was to act to blasé about it, then why are they bothering using that companies services in the first place?

Remember, this isn't:

"oops, one of my backup providers has failed... Just as well I have another 2"

But more:

"One of my backup providers has intentionally deleted my files. Not only did I pay for this service, I now effectively have one less backup provider than my carefully worked out backup strategy recommends"

Jamie Jones Silver badge

Re: Whatever happened to three copies ?

I thought there was always this IT motto that "for anything important, keep minimum three independent copies, minimum one off-site".

So, I'm afraid, I feel no sympathy whatsoever with people who put all their eggs in one cloudy basket.

So people using a *paid* for service aren't allowed to complain when files of theirs are deleted?

Besides, they could even be following the rule you've quoted, but have just effectively lost their off-site backup.

Jamie Jones Silver badge

Re: Just change the filenames ?

I now encrypt first then upload, not just for security, but to prevent the backup provider applying some stupid rules to they think is should or should not be backing up.

Just wait until they apply a rule to not backup data of an unknown type!

Tesla driver killed after smashing into truck had just enabled Autopilot – US crash watchdog

Jamie Jones Silver badge

If it has all those sensors and warnings, and (relating to the article - the steering wheel sensors can be made accurate) instead of just flashing up alerts, why not simply disable autopilot?

It may sound counter-productive, and I'm not suggesting it as some sort of punishment! Basically, drivers will know that removing your hands form the wheel would be the same as removing your hands from the wheel of a "dumb" car, and it just wouldn't happen.

Re: Nice explanation but....

I'm more annoyed that they feel the need to preface an article about CPU's with stock images of a CPU.

It's annoying when an article about an angry customer has a stock image of a person being angry, or an article about a train gaffe has a generic stock picture of a train.

Then it becomes annoying when an article about someone doing something dodgy contains a picture of said dodgy person, yet we have to assume it's just taken from the "generic dodgy looking bloke" section.

Seriously, photos should be *specifically* related to a story, not just a photo of "something like it".

Re: Arctic Circle?

Here's what Pompeo said.

More, and video of him saying it (for the sceptics) at https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/06/politics/pompeo-sea-ice-arctic-council/index.html

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday praised the Arctic region -- and its rapidly shrinking levels of sea ice -- for its economic opportunities, despite continued warnings about the catastrophic effects of climate change.

"The Arctic is at the forefront of opportunity and abundance," Pompeo said in remarks in Rovaniemi, Finland. "It houses 13 percent of the world's undiscovered oil, 30 percent of its undiscovered gas, an abundance of uranium, rare earth minerals, gold, diamonds, and millions of square miles of untapped resources, fisheries galore."

"Steady reductions in sea ice are opening new passageways and new opportunities for trade," he continued. "This could potentially slash the time it takes to travel between Asia and the West by as much as 20 days."

"Arctic sea lanes could become the 21st century Suez and Panama Canals," Pompeo remarked.
