Another body for the Google graveyard: Chrome Web Store payments. Bad news if you wanted to bank some income from these apps

Jamie Jones Silver badge

"Today, there is a thriving ecosystem of payment providers offering a far more diverse set of features than a single provider could hope to. "

Bollocks. You could say the same about the android app store, but you still force users to use your own payment system.

Chrome apps were a horrible back anyway. They were a way to get around the shortcomings of the ChromeOS "everything runs in a browser" premise.

The security baked into ChromeOS is good. If they actually allow sandboxes apps to run, and ditch the browser-centric UI, then coupled with the already existing Android integration (windowized android apps) , they'd be onto a winner.

As it stands, OS configuration, even the SSH terminal are shoehorned into browser tabs. The obvious problems with that exist, not to mention the completely different UI for browser Vs android (and it's not due to touchscreen emulation.. The Android mouse interface does that well)

Thank-you both for your replies. I checked the update thing, and it said in on the latest version.

I then checked on their website, and that is indeed the case, for some reason.

Re: An alternative?

I agree about the browsers, but unfortunately, it's apps in general.

Stupid changes made to add "bling" with no way to disable things. Options and preference controls removed to "make things easier".

I've been quite depressed with the whole GUI and app scene the last few years. I would pay thousands for a desktop I'd actually be happy with. I currently arse around with three different systems because none of them do what I want.

Everythings been "consumerised". I'm not being elitist,I just want some things to allow me to retain some level of sophistication and control.

Auto-updating of apps is annoying if you're using the app at the time.

It's bad enough that things can bomb out if google decides to update GMS without your knowledge.

I've not updated firefox yet - but I was bitten by a crappy product "upgrade" for some other app a few years ago, so now auto-backup all apks and associated obb's etc.) - there's been quite a few I've had to force downgrade.. You know, the type:

Some app comes out with some useful features. Over time, more and more is added. Suddenly they bump up the ads, or increase the cost, and suddenly you're expected to pay more for bling and "features" you never wanted in the first place. -- And I pay for apps that I use, but even some of them have been guilty of switching to a "pay++" model where you are nagged to pay again for stuff you don't want.

Bleugh.

"The lack of factual, economic, and legal support is unsurprising because Epic’s antitrust theories, like its orchestrated campaign, are a transparent veneer for its effort to co-opt for itself the benefits of the App Store without paying or complying with important requirements that are critical to protect user safety, security, and privacy," Apple writes."

If Epic was able to deliver their service any other way, Apple would have a better (although still dodgy) argument.

"it wants the court to allow it to free ride on Apple’s innovation, intellectual property and user trust."

Free ride? The iBlob owner has already paid for the device.

Re: This has to be subject to rules for automation

I was going to say the same thing. If a system technically allows you to stop focussing on driving, people will. To be "ready to take over when prompted. " doesn't just mean you can grab the wheel immediately - you also need to be already fully aware of the speed, road conditions, the traffic on your left, and right, in front, etc.

The only way for that to occur is, basically, if you are driving! Therefore, any system that requires you to be ready to take over at a moments notice is only safe if it isn't being used!

When I was in school, we did Shakespeare in English classes and drama classes, independently, but roughly at the same time.

Whilst the English classes were stuffy, our drama teacher always highlighted and explained all the rude jokes, and double entendres, which made the class much more interesting.

Re: Every time

At a previous job, way back in the large 90's, I was informally running the sites web proxy. Chatting casually to one unit manager one day, I told him that porn is being looked up all the time.

I had to log requests, but I didn't view or act on them - that's up to corporate, and if they flagged an access from my proxy, I'd have to pass them whatever relevant logs I had.

Fortunately, in the years I was doing this, this NEVER happened. But invariably I'd be debugging/tracing, and I'd see the contents of the log.

He was curious to what was logged, so I offered to show him.

Back in my office, I had only run a tail on the log file for a minute when some dodgy porn site popped up.

"See?", I said. There's porn all the time..

"Who's PC is that?"

"Hang on..." (looks up address) "Errm, it's yours!"

To be fair to brexitters, whilst we haven't yet found the magic unicorns, it does now seem that the government has found the magic money tree.

Jamie Jones Silver badge

Re: Preparation

Len, the government didn't want the brexitters to know the truth until as late as possible.

If they'd been honest from the start, they'd have never got it passed... How many of those in Ashford would have voted Tory last year if they knew the lorry park was coming?

They needed the hard-of-thinking to be in the dark for as long as possible, and now finally some of them are getting a clue, the government are now gaslighting by telling us that they told us all along that due to brexit, people would lose jobs, and the NHS would face cuts:
