The great wearables myth busted: Apps never, ever mattered

Garmin Vivoactive

I have been wearing a Vivoactive for a bit over a year now and love it. Easy to read screen, 2 week battery life, water proof, and a tiny bit of phone integration. Only issue I had was when I crashed on my electric skateboard, I shattered the glass. Watch still worked fine though. Got it replaced by Garmin for $50.

You can do the 7 to 10 back to 7 thing multiple times. I have done it 3 times. Once at launch, once after a major upgrade 10 had, and most recently to try out a Mixed Reality VR headset. The nice thing is their revert tool is excellent. I was back up and running with 7 in about 10 minutes.

Tanker was 30,000 to 50,000 fully loaded. Destroyer 8,000 to 9000 tonnes. Destroyers are maneuverable, tankers are not. both should have done avoidance maneuvers, but the most effective and culpable should have been the destroyer. Not only that, the destroyer was bristling with radar/instrumentation, and should have had unimpeachable situational awareness.

Re: You should have booked your stay by now...

Tried to book a hotel in my dad's hometown in Illinois back in February. They were all booked back then. As a matter of fact. My dad is having his high school class reunion this year and it was originally scheduled the same day. They bumped it a week later due to no rooms available. The lady in charge said the had been booked a year in advance. I will be making a day trip to drive down state, 4 hours and about 220 miles.

It all depends on how you use it.

I have a plug-in C-Max hybrid with 20 mile electric range. For what I do, it works great. I would love a long range electric, but always having an engine is great. I get 48 mpg (imp) hwy on gas anyway.

Re: Ford Sync 2

Yeah, I have Sync 2 in my 2014 C-Max Energi. It's not bad, but the voice recognition sucks, the maps are proprietary and locked, and the phone integration is pretty limited as in all I can do is play music from the phone and make calls. Supposedly it's a bit better with iPhones as it supports Car Play. The latest version of Sync 3, which is on 2016s and newer does Android Auto as well as Car Play.

As an example with voice dialing, my wife's name is Lene', pronounced Linae. I have to say call Lean to get it to dial.

I just got a plug-in hybrid version of the C-max. With plugging in at home and gas used when on longer trips and when needed to run the heater in winter, I have been getting combined 49 US MPG/59 IMP MPG. Or 20.9 km/l. Plugin hybrids are a nice compromise for some of us.

The rise, fall, and rise (again) of Microsoft's killer People feature

Same as it ever was

Excellent bit 'o snark..

" So it pulled the People feature into a standalone app, and invited services to write to a new API. Nobody did, and so the People app became a neglected shadow of its former self.

Without really trying to, Microsoft had just snuffed out Windows Phone's "killer feature". But last October, Microsoft announced that platform-level contact integration would return to Windows via a "universal contacts database". There would be a new API and Microsoft invited developers including social media services to write to it."

I got a Garmin Vivoactive about 2 months ago for $85. The best things for me are that the GPS tracks my walks and my commutes on skateboard without the GPS eating the battery on my phone and it gamifys my stats so it encourages me to be more active. It's waterproof to 50 meters, and a battery charge lasts for a week. Without the good battery life, cheap price, and being waterproof, I would not have bought this watch.

The specs on this would be great for a radiology workstation. If someone would get 510k approval for mammography, you would have a whole workstation for less than the cost of one 5MP mammo monitor. As it is, it would work great for all other modalities.

My guess is that there were too many warranty returns on it. Typical things I had seen were people getting the wristband replaced under warranty at least 2-3 times. Since the wristband was integral to the functionality of the HT sensor, it couldn't be replaced by an ordinary watch wristband. Also, there were several reports of the battery dieing prematurely.

reverted 3 times

Installed on my desktop system, couldn't get my work's vpn connection to work, so reverted. Installed on laptop, ran poorly even after tweeks so reverted. Tried again after AU came out. Still had performance issues, but they cut revert time to 10 days, which didn't leave me enough time to fiddle with it to try to get to run as well as win 7, so reverted again. The good thing is that the revert process worked great every time.

Opera debuts free VPN built into desktop browser

Sporkinum

was going to try it

I downloaded it and was going to try it as I hadn't used opera in like 10 years or so. It said it imported my bookmarks, but they were nowhere to be found. I even tried exporting as HTML and then importing them that way. Still no joy. Sent them a note that bookmarks were borked and marked it as one star.

Never got to try the VPN out. BTW, I use Chrome on my laptop for only one thing. Watching BBC and 4 using the Hola VPN plugin. It only runs while we are watching shows, so the VPN only runs during that hour or two a night. (Laptop docking station connected to TV via displayport to hdmi cable.)

I've gotten $260 worth of Amazon $5 cards since February 2013 when I started this. I certainly don't mind the 5 minutes a day it takes. It usually takes around 3 weeks to acquire enough points for another gift card. Might be slower once they change though, since I am not on Windows 10.

Some Windows 10 Anniversary Update: SSD freeze

Sporkinum

Threw Windows 10 just before the expiration of the "freebee". 2012 HP Elitebook without SSD. Ran poorly and had 100% disk usage issue. Found info online that had be do a registry entry. That stopped the disk issue, but still ran poorly, so I reverted back to 7. After Anniversary Update came out, I tried again. No disk issue then, but still ran poorly. Since Microsoft shortened the time for rollbacks to 10 days with AU, I rolled back, because I didn't have time to mess with it. Probably just keep it on 7 as there were other issues, like VPN not working, and various drivers that I may or may not have been able to get working. Just not worth the hassle. At least the rollback worked great both times!

Windows 10 Anniversary Update is borking boxen everywhere

Sporkinum

Re: In completely unrelated news...

Thanks for the info. I tried 10 on my laptop just before the 29th. It ran poorly, even after a bunch of tweaks were applied, so I reverted back to 7. I just threw AU on over the weekend to see if it ran better, and it does, but still doesn't seem as responsive as 7. Maybe with a week or so of dicking around with it I could get it to run as well as 7, but now that it appears that I have 10 days or less to roll back, they are forcing my hand. I'll be rolling back tonight once I get home. I tried it on my home desktop PC a month ago, but had to roll back as it wouldn't work with my company's VPN. That machine has been imaged, and I'll need to image the laptop as well since there is no roll-back any longer. If I want to "try" it again in the future, at least I'll have a way out.

Re: Windows As A Service - What Cost

That's a very good point. I am a cheap bastard and my computers are all old. They may decide, at some point, to no longer run on my old CPUs. I'd be up a creek then, but with an older OS (7-8.1), that should not be a problem.

Man killed in gruesome Tesla autopilot crash was saved by his car's software weeks earlier

Sporkinum

2 things. The truck driver was the one who caused the accident by pulling out in front of traffic. The other is that many trailers have devices to smooth airflow under the trailer that would block light underneath. Possibly their software was relying on that instead of an open undercarriage. When I checked on the trucking company, it turns out it is just one guy and a truck.

Sporkinum

Re: @Schultz Yes but ... this process will make autopilots safer

My first thought was that LIDAR, or some other active sensor type, would have not been confused like a passive camera. I would guess that Tesla will make a software change that requires more active participation by the driver. More frequent hands on wheel checks, etc.
