You know the drill: SAP has asked Joe Public to name Munich arena so go forth and be very silly

TheBishop

It's a big place. So, Areana Grande?

LESTER gets ready to trundle: The Register's beer-bot has a name

Re: In loving memory

Agreed! And the robot definitely needs to feature the word "Tomfoolery" somewhere, perhaps emblazoned across the front as a fitting tribute? Lester would have loved it.

The ultimate full English breakfast – have your SAY

Re: Nobody has mentioned toast....

No, I don't think you can get a proper fried breakfast in London; I've tried. If you want one, move north.

TheBishop

Proper Full English

It is of course a matter of personal taste, but for me:

Bacon - don't mind what type but it must be nice and crispy

Fried egg, yolk must be runny (to dip your sausage and fried bread in)

Fried bread - has to be white bread, not too thick and properly fried all the way through

Sausage - a nice Cumberland or similar

Tomatoes - real tomatoes halved and fried in the pan. Need to be good quality ones

Baked beans - good quality, and not cooked to death and then left under a heat lamp for hours either

Tomato ketchup - a generous dollop on the plate, not on any of the ingredients. How can a mere chef possibly know where I want to put it?

And, of course, the meal must be accompanied by a generous mug of proper British tea (I believe this one was already settled by the Reg a while ago) and, if possible, a couple of slices of buttered toast

What's not to like?

Lester Haines: RIP

TheBishop

Sad news. He was a talented writer and his upbeat stories never failed to add colour to my day. As a permanent memorial to Lester I'd like to formally request that The Register sneaks the word "tomfoolery" into at least one article every week. Who's with me?

It's even GRIMMER up North after MEGA SKY BROADBAND OUTAGE

Broadband? My 56K modem's working fine, what are you on about?

Need a green traffic light all the way home? Easy with insecure street signals, say researchers

All Sorts of Problems

Back in the 1980s when I was a student there were several traffic lights in the centre of Sheffiled that I could change to green on approach simply by pulsing the amateur radio transmitter in the car. Never worked out whether the RF was hitting the controller directly or affecting the induction loops in the road but it just goes to show that systems such as these have all kinds of potential vulnerabilities

I think they'll probably tie it in with the Millennium Falcon's appearance in the Lego movie

That's the trouble with us Brits, we're too honest. Would have been better to use NASA-speak and say that it "suffered a non-mitigated power-up anomaly". Ah well, better luck next time - perhaps the Playmonaut can take a spare fuse up with him?

1-in-10 e-tomes 'are self-published'... most are 'rubbish' says book ed

TheBishop
Go

So why do they sell?

Ultimately the market is what sells - and if self-published ebooks are actually taking 12% of the market share then a fair proportion of buyers don't seem to agree they are universally rubbish. There are some damn good self-published ebooks out there that would never get a look-in with traditional publishers. Don't forget that a publisher's primary definition of a "good" book is "one that will definitlely make me money" rather than a genuine evaluation of a work or writer's merit for their own sake

I live in Bury and the council have just announced that from October they will only be able to collect my bin once a fortnight. Obviously the binmen are going to be too busy surfing...
