FUKE NEWS: Robot snaps inside drowned Fukushima nuke plant

I wonder...

Since they finally figured out how the Romans made their concrete, which is superior to Portland cement - why not build reactors with it?

Not worth it

1. It's a Dodge.

2. Known for weak transmissions.

3. Brand name is famous for anti-mpg - I.E. Gas Hog.

4. Like a used cop cruiser, probably has DNA/bodily fluid 'evidence' all over the interior...

Pass.

Re: To be fair ...

ISP's in the 90's oversold dialup connections at an average of 14+ to 1 (AoL was 20+ to 1 for a while there) to make a profit and only added modem racks when the customer busy complaints added up to a certain percentage. That's the reality. Bandwidth and hardware cost money and your customer A has *always* subsidized not only customer B, but bandwidth/hardware upgrades at the ISP level.

Re: I read this story about 15 years ago..

Depends. If it was a submersible pump, you replace it. You may never see it again.

I just had one replaced for $1800 and it was only a 84' hole with the pump at 60' (I have a 3' water table) - original had been in there 16 years. The deeper you have to go, prices increase quite a bit.

Edit: I don't get why the pump went on at every flush - this system not have a pressure bladder tank to stop that from happening?

404

Re: @Dave Austin ... Was it wise to fire him?

So.

Bottom line is that a company, any company, can terminate an employee for insubordination if the employee does not surrender their Constitutional rights when ordered to by said company.

Is that correct?

Re: Permanent Storage

That right there is pretty exciting but at a price. Sony and Panasonic are producing Archival Discs, Sony's writer is $6400 and Panasonic's is untouchable for a consumer/small business with their rack systems.

There was a link off the page you gave about M-DISC - blue-ray cd's with up to 100GB capacity that can be written to with certain brand blue-ray burners - they are allegedly supposed to last 1000 years and aren't too pricey.

Thank you!

404

Permanent Storage

I've been considering current storage methodology lately as my video collection grows every day and backups become difficult to maintain.

I'm one of those cord-cutters, you see, and between a Netflix HD account and an Amazon Prime membership, I've got over 20TBs of recorded movies/tv shows/etc on various RAIDS and WD clouds that back up to other various RAIDS & WD clouds. It's a lot of fucking space and the software I use records the streams as they are delivered, so we're talking a lot of time too. All good and fine, right?

My issue is that there isn't anything permanent to store data (write once, no degradation) - CD's wear out/degrade, SSD's fail, HD's fail, vinyl melts, etc. Seems like the only way is to stay ahead and write everywhere on anything you can get your hands on - except stone, which can last thousands of years, but the playback is awful.

The limping Roo tree of Nigeria. The towering Wattle of Aldershot! The Maidenhead Weeping Water Plant! The naughty Leicestershire Flashing Oak! The flatulent Elm of West Ruislip! The Quercus Maximus Bamber Gascoigni! The Epigillus! The Barter Hughius Greenus!

With my best buddy by my side, we'd sing! Sing! Sing!

[singing]

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.

I sleep all night and I work all day.

MOUNTIES:

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.

He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:

I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.

I go to the lavatory.

On Wednesdays I go shoppin'

And have buttered scones for tea.

MOUNTIES:

He cuts down trees. He eats his lunch.

He goes to the lavatory.

On Wednesdays he goes shopping

And has buttered scones for tea.

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.

He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:

I cut down trees. I skip and jump.

I like to press wild flowers.

I put on women's clothing

And hang around in bars.

MOUNTIES:

He cuts down trees. He skips and jumps.

He likes to press wild flowers.

He puts on women's clothing

And hangs around in bars?!

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.

He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:

I cut down trees. I wear high heels,

Suspendies, and a bra.

I wish I'd been a girlie,

Just like my dear Papa.

MOUNTIES:

He cuts down trees. He wears high heels,

Suspendies, and a bra?!

[talking]

What's this? Wants to be a girlie?! Oh, My!

And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!...

[singing]

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.

He sleeps all night and he works all day.

He's a lumberjack, and he's okaaaaay.

He sleeps all night and he works all day.

Re: If Beavis and Butthead moved into IT...

This isn't new - ran into this in the late 90's and should have it's own dank meme by now... Seems to be related to the 'Mom's Basement' mentality when someone or some few basement trolls make good and use the gobs of cash they've received to live out their idea of CEO-level corporate life. They tend to implode over the years though. Like these guys.

Roughly, that'll get you one visit a month to physically check your machine for one year, with an emergency 4 hour response for 'other'* under an annual maintenance contract.

*Other being like last Friday, upgrades, or users shooting themselves in the foot, doing things they shouldn't be doing. Of course, 'other' pays well but clients do get a 25% discount off the hourly rate for being under contract.

Hell of a thing, a 'customer/client/datacow' pays for the monitoring system - be it Alexa, Google, etc - pays for the power/bandwidth the system uses, all for a perceived 'convenience' - to be milked dry of any/all information, folded, stapled, mutilated into a product for a business profit.

I'm just marveling at it. Update that old saw, 'Take my wife, please!' to 'Take all my data, please! I'll pay!'.

On Topic-> That machine should have been sold on QVC or the Home Shopping Network, but they want to be Apple, mixed with a little HP dicketry. They attempted to sell it at $699 at first, but that proved to be a bit much for the folks who cannot afford to hire fitness trainers... I understand they have delivery issues to parts of the country because the packets have next to zero shelf life (which is odd because I can order live tropical fish from a breeder in Oregon and have them 3-day shipped to Tennessee with possible 1-2 losses from a group of ten). You also cannot buy juice packets unless you already are a registered owner of said kitchen counter clutterer.

30,000 London gun owners hit by Met Police 'data breach'

404

'US military, "properly trained", same sentence? For what values of "properly trained"???'

US military on the pointy end will kill/deny you resources quite efficiently, while the support train can fudge training numbers and thus do not have the actually training - they also tend to be a mixed bag of personality types, so they can drag down the kill ratio. "We Train Hard, so War is Easy" combined with Unit tradition of 'It is not your duty to die for your country, there is no honor in that, it's to make the other sonuvabitch die for his!' (pretty sure Patton quote)

Figure in that there are now several generations of retired combat vets - woe betides the side they are not on come de la Revolucion. Historic ref: Revolutionary Armies of Washington et al had high levels of British trained combat vets from the French-Indian wars, who were further trained in frontier fighting tactics borrowed from the war. British didn't have many blooded troops until they brought in the Hessians, and were slow to react to creative attacks by the so-called rustic colonials. Having all these vets around not happy with Federal policies, should make folks thoughtful. It won't, because humans are content to repeat history because they have somewhat superior intellect compared to the masses, therefore consider it inconceivable that they would reap the same results as their more-backward political predecessors in the past.

As for uncontrolled weapons purchasing... I'm at odds with the NRA (paid member) in the belief NO ONE should be allowed to own a firearms unless they have completed a proficiency range test and a strong Law & Safety test - make them work for it if they want it - I want zero accidents and responsibility with weapons ownership. But what do I know?

The London argument doesn't really apply with the recent truck attack on that bridge - trained citizen weapons ownership would have enabled two better possible outcomes: Armed Concerned Citizen stops attack with personal weapon or more likely, blocking the sonuvabitch trucker in a hurry, because Mr. Crazed Trucker ain't getting position on me by cheating. Isn't nice and I do not have to tolerate bad behavior in polite society.

Enough rambling, lack of sleep is making me see things..

All I heard during Obama's administration was crying and in hysterics over FEMA camps, martial law, Obama this, Obama that, from conservatives for eight damn years.
