Wat?
....I have no idea what's going on... world's going to hell in a handbasket so therefore...
Cheers!

The memories of my time in tech support, both as a tech and as tech support manager has been suppressed since the late 90's. Probably a survival trait, no one wants to remember that hateful episode in their lives, whether supplied with a shared help-desk punching bag or not.
I do recall alt.tech-support.recovery in dejanews - before Google ate it and removed the waving of dead chickens to access that much-needed resource.

...you find yourself in a position with a two year old Dell Precision tower, running Windows 7 64bit, and the on-board video gets zapped due to an electrical storm from hell that blew up the solar panels on the roof, killed a router, UPS, and printer. Just buy another PCI-e video card and move on right? Oh Noooes! Dell neglected to solder in the PCI-e slot, you can see where it *should* have been, but Dell saved 10 cents. Two PCI slots only.
Do you realize how difficult it is to find a PCI video card that works with Win7Pro? I finally found an old Trident in a box I haven't looked in ages at.
Moral of the story is that sometimes it's not a bad thing to keep your parts around.
;)
Yep yep - I was going for that with an Acer Iconia A500 tablet - it made all the right noises, had the hardware, lacked software execution and a few other bits- went back to an HP Elitebook 8440p that does run Win8Pro nicely. Has the heft and sharp corners to make someone notice. Manly thing lol.
That's a lot of money for not having a keyboard, these Surface thingys..
The dude posts a lot - not hard to do if you must give an opinion about everything lol.
Missed any email El Reg sent ->ancient board email has been deactivated till the spammers update their lists - updated now heh.
Fatal flaw in El Reg's software though, if you change your board username, it resets your postcount. Discovered this a year ago when going from 'Yeehaw' to '404'. Hell, I've been here since late 90's - got a Reg pin in fact (Lester was being a prick and John hooked me up - Thanks John!).
In any case, we doan' need no stinkin' badges!
;)
Live pretty much 99.95% on the Win8Pro desktop - iit's where I get my work done. Pinned whatever I need regularly. I can see how the 'Start" part of the ui would be useful on a tablet/touchscreen device.
What I can't fathom is why I would want an app for something a browser has navigated for years now.
;)
There are four groups to consider here, all respectable, gays, women, hetero, and lesbian. First two might say 'meh', but the last would pound their fists on the table and yell 'Hell Yeah!" Like a few of my friends, tolerance goes both ways.
We've learned boobs can kill, which relieves me because I thought I might be the only one this ever happened to. It's not something you consider during normal circumstances, correct? Picked up some German, learned translators don't do proper German. Discovered some Reg Commentards have some breastfeeding issues. If this continues, we find find out exactly how many square inches of skin it would take to smother somebody. All good stuff, wouldn't you say?
Cheers!

At a client's office I was on AT&T's support autohell, the damn thing kept telling me it couldn't understand "I need help" - rinse and repeat about six times when I finally mustered my best Indian accent and said "I am needing help"- immediately connected to an 'agent' named 'Mark" (why are most Indian call centers populated by 'Marks'?)

1. Subject of the story was just sad - Brits have their oddities, just like 'merkins, but dayum!
2. "(most smokers can cope a couple of hours at least, and some can sleep all night without breaking for a cigarette)." What? Has the author ever been a smoker(1)? Wake up to smoke? You have bigger problems than that if this is happening.
(1) Started 27 years ago - Army buddy started feeding them to me in bars, next thing I know, it's packs, cartons... If you ever meet a Richard S. Walker from Maine somewhere, please punch him in the mouth for me. Thanks!
Gotta quit.... easier said than done.
David, this must have been a tongue-in-cheek joke because, since as everybody NOT in the US is fond of telling merkins, we mostly run around with our collective heads up our fat asses.
Not an agent of the Feds, just worried about his daughter, but surely this could be used during the internal police investigation as justification.
Sucks, but plausible.

However, turning down a bad job as a contractor is not a luxury, it is a survival trait. It has to be. Bad jobs can cost as much or more and can kill your business/reputation due to the stresses of simply dealing with people (management) that wants something for nothing. Better to pursue other opportunities and make better use of your limited time.
Austin Powers: Only 2 things scare me, and one is nuclear war.
Basil: What's the other?
Austin Powers: Excuse me?
Basil: What's the other thing that scares you?
Austin Powers: Carnies.
Basil: What?
Austin Powers: Circus folk. Nomads, you know. Smell like cabbage. Small hands.
85 Chevy Sprint (Geo Metro precursor) 1.0L 3cylinder carburetored engine w/5speed manual transmission 45 city/51 hwy mpg - I guarantee you it was a higher-reving engine. AC and that's about it. Very light car.
Point is that the Prius needs a larger engine to pull it around in a manner suitable to the average driver - that feeling you could get out and push faster - with all the power -sucking accessories running. It could get better mileage, but customers demand a little power, so we get a trade-off. No one is going to buy a gutless wonder that cannot get out of it's own way.
"Mkay. WTF do I do now?".
->1st laptop - Gateway (Acer) NE56R (deal! $100 off Staples coupon on clearance= $239 out the door +free win8 upgrade). Intel Pentium B950 2.10Ghz, 4GB ram, 500GB hd, full kb, 15.6" screen, mult-iouch touchpad, Upgrade was seamless through Gateway upgrade assistant - kept her apps & data. Burned .iso for reinstall.
->2nd laptop - HP Elitebook 8440p ($300 Craigslist) Intel Core i5 M520 2.40Ghz, 6GB ram, 250GB hd, 14" screen,multi-touch touchpad. Started upgrade after logical thought after starting first on using Microsoft's Upgrade Assistant - only retained my data but finished first.
While I saw the tutorial on start up, my wife did not. I just handed it to her and said "Your password is the same". We spent the next few (enjoyable) hours finding out the different ways to do things (while I reinstalled my apps), overall we like what Microsoft has done with Win8. I can still do my IT work with it and the wife can do whatever it is she does (FB and the like). - we also note that having the same interface across desktop/mobile/tablet, will make it easier for consumers to buy into it easier. They can pick up anything from Microsoft and know exactly what to do.
Food for Thought: If you consider that TIFKAM is an active desktopish start menu and the desktop is still there, it's easier to conceptualize Win8 (although I think the desktop tile should be active so you know whats on over there, just saying)
;)
Obviously aren't getting the love they demand from Microsoft - used this 'trick' in the 90's at Comdex. Poke holes about somebody's software/hardware, marketing notices if you do it right, and they send you free kit to 'try out' - thus getting positive feedback from reporters/important tech trendsetters, etc.
This is a cry for Surface tablets @El Reg.
;)
Perhaps a suggestion that the US is very busy watching it's own citizens right now and doesn't want to share that data with anybody else just yet. Witness the drones the local law enforcement is getting - seriously, wtf?
Probably just paranoid (adjusts tinfoil hat), but I do know that about 85% of the intrusion attempts on my various networks originate from China.
Plausible deniability is the term coined by the CIA back in the early 60's. In this case, writing intentionally sloppy code enables these companies (any company really), to say "aw shucks, we're just stupid, here's a patch" when run-on-the-mill hackers, state-sponsored hackers, etc perform data rape&pillage actions to your now de-virginized network.
Yes, I have my tinfoil hat on, thank you!
;)
Farm work is easier than factory - worked in cotton farming for a couple of years. Longer hours but a helluvalot less stressful. However, Obama is trying to stop that - unfair to "undocumented workers" or some such (!?!).
AC further up? I worked delivering newpapers @13, @15 was honored with a $1.35/hr job at El Taco - that lasted three days until the whole shift got fired for being caught in a massive food fight by the manager one night.
:)
icon? no reason, just thirsty..
Wife is hinting at an Asus netbook before they run out of stock...
The Scenario: Wife has Kindle, Kindle Fire, and my Acer A500 tablet. Kindle-nice. Kindle Fire- nicer but surfing only adequate if nothing else available. Acer A500 tablet- her main (stolen/taken?) since it proved somewhat inadequate for the networking/work stuff I do. Happy enough but starting to "note" issues she having doing this that or the other, thus the Asus netbook "hint".
So, I can help out here - now if somebody will do something about the other 3,999,999, that should be just fine.
;)
