Reddit's warrant canary shuffles off this mortal coil

Black Helicopters

Obviously...

The NSA/FBI are from Goonswarm/Imperium - kinda figures they would be goons - since Dreddit and TEST are on the Good Guys side, they're making good on their threats after getting their asses handed to them in-game.

Bastards...

BlackBerry's still losing millions – but hit its revenue target, finally

Why all the carrier hate?

Verizon is trying to sell the Blackberry Priv for $299 *plus* a two year contract. Few years ago I bought the Samsung Note 3 in a buy one get one free scenario just after the 3's were introduced (and before the Ellen Degenerous did the selfie thing). There's been no advertising and even though I had a BB Priv arrival notification in with my local 'Verizon Business Representative', not a word has been said by this Verizon busybody about it, yet calls up every other week trying to dump last year's POS tablet flavor of the month on me. I know the BB Priv is in stock, yet Verizon has decided to be dicks about it for some reason.

Fuck. I don't like companies like Verizon, AT&T, Facebook, Google, etc becoming all-powerful, where just a word or policy can make or break another company. Between the governments and the corps... us line animals are fucked.

I hate code...

... I hate the people writing it, I hate having to fix it... which I do all_the_fucking_time.

I liked doing programming at one time - until that fateful day the main programmer moved on. This programmer was responsible for porting Netsol's Unix registrar code to our ISP's Windows 2000 AD network, a biggish deal since everything has to be perfect. This guy made performance bonus's and a fucking big payoff when the software was 'finished', then he quit and moved on across the country. Week later the big launch comes and it_failed_horribly. Enter me, the senior admin who just recently upgraded the ISP's network from NT 4.01 to Win2k AD with Solaris x86 DNS servers, and I'm the guy they're pointing fingers at. I didn't know shit about what the 'programmer' was doing, I'm not sales or head of the programmer/webdesign department, How_the_fuck_am_I_responsible? I caught so much shit... and the motherfucker didn't document shit. Ended up coding that POS essentially by gunpoint, no bonus, from scratch. I giggled when that registrar (and the ISP) folded a few years later...

I have hated programmers since that point in my life. I'll admit they are useful at times, but overall they did shit code.

Windows

I call bullshit on the entire story

'In the magical days of dialup internet' the majority of the time Internet Explorer wasn't even installed or had Internet Explorer 2. - as an ISP we had to provide CD's for Trumpet Winsock and *the* Netscape browser just for a Windows machine to connect to any service.

If you remember, it wasn't until Win98 SE that you could connect (mostly) right out of the box.

No, he's going with the Brave Monkey Approach or BMA - Brave Monkeys aren't creative, they just fix the broke shit and go no further. You know them, just good enough to keep kit going but not imaginative enough to be proactive in their IT approach, so the author proposes another IT position (additional CTO or Dreams Manager).

It sounds like area specialization as IT is becoming more of a commodity.

Debating whether to linux her out of spite...

404

Re: Netbooks had one good use

They are still good for education. I picked up a later model Aspire One* with Win7 starter, 2GB ram, 250GB HD, from Craigslist for homeschooling my 12/yr old daughter for $40. Gave it a new battery, reconnected the wireless antenna lead (guy thought he had a sucker, he didn't), and it runs great. Perfect for doing her homework, hates it because it's not powerful enough to play her games when she decides to fuck off instead of doing work.

Actually there was a program called 'Oil Change' introduced at COMDEX in 1995/96, that would scan your computer and fetch drivers, updates, etc from your OS, to programs, to Soundblaster drivers. Revolutionary at the time. I sat on one of the booth bimbos for hours until I got a couple of copies.

I've got this bigass Dell PowerEdge tower server under my desk that runs Server 2008(original) - sounds like a jet starting up/running and was purchased back in 2005 for just under $6k. Has four 73GB SCSI drives, Xeons, 4GB ECC mem, redundant PS'sss, etc. Good machine that ran a Win 2003 AD. SQL, engineering programs for many years.

Now I have it and don't know what to do with it... Fill the bays with eight NOS 500GB SCSI drives and make it a NAS? Prolly not, have a WD 4TB Cloudy thing for that, but damn it's serious iron.

The scene of the crime: My back yard.

Time: Memorial Day, 2006.

Report: I was cooking brats on the BBQ when my dear old dad stared making comments about penises on the grill, which offended my wife, who decided that day was the day to go off on said dad. Dad didn't take it well and began a family fight the extends to this day ten years later.

Attempted to patch things up in 2012, no deal. Haven't spoken to him or a huge majority of my family since.
