Re: It all comes down to who you believe

'[1] Are Samsung actually selling lots of these? Why else would you be able to get a free tablet with a phone on some US Cellular contracts?'

Yes, Verizon pushes the FUCK out of Samsung products, they sell a lot of them.

The thing with USCellular is because it's a third or fourth tier player and requires extra to pull someone into their store. I don't like them much, they're shady.

Very good!

Yep, I'm considered Conservative yet I've had some flamewars over twitter where I've been banned by both sides of the argument. Just because I like to play devil's advocate from time to time and start shooting at sacred balloons of both sides, reminds me of the late 90's newsgroup flamewars.

However, I also believe we're in a very dangerous place right now in the US. Read a story the other day about there has not been this amount of polarization in the US since 1859/1860.... NOT a good comparison.

I reckon we shall see, eh?

Amazon slashes mobe prices to get more eyes on lockscreen ads

404

Re: Lockscreen ads / Notification ads = Pox on Android

There was this person I knew who liked playing Clash of Clans on his Android cell phone, but wanted a larger screen. That man did his research and found that despite Amazon's bastardization of Android, certain Fire HD tablets could be rooted and a vanilla Android rom could be installed. So he purchased several refurbished Fire HD's on special for $59/ea. at Amazon one day. I hear he's still playing Clash of Clans...

Re: open access to gummint data, like her E-MAILS maybe?

'And she obviously knows NOTHING about the internet, or technology. Her swiss-cheese security on the e-mail server is proof of THAT.'

True enough. However, your argument should emphasize her poor judgement in hiring 'professionals' to take on the project, cast doubt upon her character for her staff being afraid to say 'No', question her intelligence because she doesn't realize how important security is, or her age when she cannot operate a personal communications device that any 5 year old child has already mastered. BlackBerry's turnaround stalls

404

Does Chen ride a unicorn to work?

Has Chen not noticed Microsoft giving Windows 10 away? That the old business model for software sales is no longer valid? I'd love to see him explain his vision to whomever he reports to, explain why the marketing for the Priv was so perfectly fucked up... I believe a valid claim could be made that Chen set the Priv up to fail just to prove his software-only Blackberry idea to be The Only Way.

Let's recap: From the November 6th, 2015 launch, the Priv was overpriced at $720, under-marketed, and carrier locked to AT&T and T-Mobile. Six months later April 2016, Verizon and Sprint get the CDMA Priv, still at $720. The Blackberry Store carries only the GSM version, not the CDMA version, and later drops the price to $649.

Which brings us to today with the GSM Priv for $499 at Amazon - still cannot purchase a new unlocked CDMA Priv from anyone other than Verizon or Sprint for.... drum-roll please.... $720.

IDK, this is kinda fragmented - reminds me of the BB Torch when it was introduced. AT&T got the slider version and Verizon got the non-slider Torch three months later. Made me mad enough to switch from our BB Storm2's to Samsung S4s and then to the Note3. I was thrilled to see the Priv introduced, I'm feeling a little burned by Samsung for not releasing Marshmallow on the Note3*, and was interested in getting some organized security patches/upgrades in a timely manner fro a vendor I trusted. Give me Apple quality hardware with Blackberry security software and I'll buy everything they have. But nooooo....

*Require Marshmallow for some stuff I want to do.

Me: Ok, how about I take that one there on the shelf?

Staples: nope, we can't give it to you for the online price.

Me: What? Why not?

Staples: The numbers wouldn't match in the system and then we'd have to call those bastards at online Staples and we don't like them. Huge problem, can't be done.

Me: Seriously?

Staples: Yep, whatever the fuck you ordered will be in tomorrow..

Me: Let's just cancel it then.

Staples: We can't until whatever the fuck you ordered comes in, then we can run a return..........

Twitter expands beyond 140 characters

404

Hmmm, that will help a bit

imo, twitter has become somewhat of an echo chamber, with folks on both sides following other folks with the same opinions. Seriously, how many times does '________ is the Debbil!' have to be retweeted? That gets irritating and I've pretty much checked out of politics until it's time to do the dirty deed and vote for the ones less likely to kill us all.

Now that being said, *targeted* tweeting can be very effective to get a point across. Whether good or bad, a good old school newsgroup flame, name, and shame (or praise from time to time), can get results with creative hashtagging and mentions to potentially interested parties. I'm currently having a lovely time trolling... baiting... having a public conversation with several local politicians and various government agencies (yeah wtf El Reg about that anyway?).

Moving on, I really don't see how Twitter can monetize unless they start charging for a organization's account/presence on twitter - make them pay for their targeted advertising etc. I mean twitter is both big and small at the same time, essentially it's a public messaging client with a much larger reach across the world. Difficult.

Re: Lightning strikes are always fun

In the late 90's, company I worked for put up Tsunami 2.4Ghz transmitters in towers around Tucson, Arizona that could push a wireless signal about 5km line of sight, creating one of the first point-to-point consumer wireless connections in the country. It was done on the cheap (ok gear wasn't cheap, but the owner of said company should have bought spectrum since he was throwing money around), but we used Cisco 48 port switches with T1/T3 connections to each tower for packet traffic.

There was one important tower close to downtown that got hit with lightning literally every storm and would take it down. Credit goes to Cisco with their robust switches, we would have to go to the tower, simply move the ethernet cable over to another port, and connectivity was restored. That tower's switch would get replaced roughly every two years after it ran out of ports - owner of that tower never did figure out why it was such a lightning magnet or ever get t grounded properly. Mysteries of the Unknown shit.
