A recent report found that Apple had a paltry 4.6 per cent share of the massive Chinese smartphone market.
Sounds reasonable. But last week El Reg posted an image showing 22.4% share http://regmedia.co.uk/2013/09/03/smartphones_all_markets_small.jpg (Which sounds less likely)
At least keep your BS consistent El Reg :)
"It didn't come out on top against Apple Records,Cisco or Proview and I don't think it will in this case, should it decide to press on with this 'champagne' business."
Well.... It depends what you mean by "come out on top". They had to pay a fuck load of cash, but they still sell music using the name Apple and they still sell a device called "iPhone" and they still sell a device named "iPad" in china.
I'm not defending them, but their attitude of "do what we want and pay the fines later" does seem to work.
I have sent salesforce / force.com applications for review.
Yes, they have access to your code.
If your app connected to an external web service and did not escape values before including them in a page / query / code it would not pass the security review, that's exactly what the review is there for,
Whether you agree with his opinion or not, it's pretty obvious that's not what was implied.
Rather that a ban on a product could result in people losing jobs and livelihoods. Most likely the people in China assembling these products. In contrast to just mega-corps scoring points and slimey lawyers milking both sides for all they're worth.
That you would jump to that conclusion says more about you than it does Monty.
Back under your rock please.
"If I want the mobile version of a website I'll ask for it in the URL and don't want it assumed on the basis of my user agent string, which is consequently set to masquerade as a desktop. Maybe I'm not the only one?"
You're definitely not the only one, you're still part of an unimaginably tiny percentage though.
Alternative DNS isn't new, its been done before, a company called new.net sold their own "alternative domains" like .xxx - It didn't work out too well for them when Icann launched the same extension.
I think the last thing you would want is competing DNS systems, never knowing if all of your users will reach your intended website because they may be looking up to a different DNS server. Seems like a Scammers dream!
Errr, nobody said it was the same UI, the article specifically mentioned 4 UIs. Next time try reading before commenting :)
"All four versions of the Ubuntu UI are be presented by the same underlying OS code, and Ubuntu can switch from one to the other depending on the size of the display and attached peripherals. "
I've found OpenElec to be quite buggy and unfriendly in my personal experience.
It cannot autodetect Wifi, all of the settings must be input manually, and it has the hidden step of "restart your system" which is not mentioned on screen.
Also, it connects to my wifi aprox. 50% of the time. If it doesn't automatically connect at the beginning, there's no way for it to connect later on, you just have to keep restarting the system until it eventually picks up a connection.
I've found several XBMC plugins to not function correctly on openElec.
This is just my personal experience, appreciate it's not everyones.
A lot of dislike for Apple recently, and even (especially?) as a user of their products, I can see why.
But I don't see why somebody who admittedly didn't read the article, but instead jumped straight to the comments section to spam it with his personal thoughts & no meaningful insight would get any thumbs up from El Reg readers?
I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the article was?
But If the free newspaper on the bus is to be believed, the photographer didn't get paid anything for them anyway, except his usual wages from the Magazine who he works for.

Re: why use dollar bills for a UK currency measure. Are fivers not good enough?
Because then the story doesn't sound as impressive (Not that I'm condoning it).
If they're just trying to make the number seem bigger, why not tell us how many olympic sized pools of 1p coins this could fill
I think you forgot you were on a geek website...
Bragging that you run a non-mainstream OS and don't install java tends not to be that impressive to people who know what they're talking about :)
News websites would be pretty thin on articles if they only printed things which directly related to your computer setup. Nice that you felt the need to tell the world this doesn't affect you though.

"I fully believe it, most of my & my wifes mobile access show an iPhone or iPad user agent, so it must be true."
I suspect you & your wife represent an unimaginably small drop in the ocean when compared to the millions of people who will not change their user agent.
Whilst I kind of agree, Samsungs are generally high end smartphones that probably generate a lot of app revenue, I dislike your general fandroidism...
Assuming your figures are correct, 74% OS market share does not equal 74% app market share.
Many low end phones are shipped with android, and a much higher percentage of Android users that do download apps could be considered to be "freetards" (Don't like paying for apps).
So your sweeping statement suggesting all app developers should be targeting Android is not necessarily true. For some profitable iOS developers, the additional development may not be worth the additional revenue.
Not a fan of all these new tlds either, It will make branding and advertising URLs a lot harder. I think you're right, things will get more confusing for your average user.
But to be fair .wales is the same amount of characters as .co.uk, so I don't think "cumbersome and long" is a valid argument.
