You can only diffuse the energy so much before you would have been better off just putting solar panels on the ground.

Re: Stop the pandering!
Well, that is often the problem. If you're an asshole and you're at the bottom of the corporate ladder then you will likely get fired, unless you're the star developer in which case they might overlook it. It gets worse though when the management includes assholes who then hire more assholes. Or the worst case is someplace like Uber where it really did seem to start at the top

Re: Wasting their time
Years ago while programming T1 boards I learned that I could set whatever I wanted for the 'A' (originating) number. The network didn't check and just accepted anything. I don't know if it's still as wide open as it once was, but I get plenty of calls with fake originating numbers so it's still a problem.

You're not imagining it. Amazon and AWS want to hire all your friends, enemies, and everyone in between
Re: "You don't get through the process of hiring unless you're really, really good"
Really? Maybe that's a local thing because here I've been told by people I know at Amazon, Google and Facebook that I'd make an extra 15-30% if I took a position at at any of them. I'm well paid already so the extra isn't enough to make up for the downsides.

Re: Land of the free
These too big to fail companies would fail less often if they focused on the long term rather than the next quarter. Cap executive salaries at a couple hundred thousand with any additional compensation coming in the form of stock with a 5 year vesting period.
And make stock buy backs illegal again to get rid of some of the stock manipulation shenanigans. Then they will actually need to manage the company in a sustainable manner if they want to make the big bucks

Well they can do away with the filibuster so things can actually get done.
Then pass appropriate voting laws so that the Republicans can no longer rig the system in their favor. Finally appoint a few more judges to the Supreme Court.

After 15 years and $500m, the US Navy decides it doesn't need shipboard railguns after all
Re: It’s not 15 years
Well that is all true, but it won't make rail guns suddenly feasible. Making a rail gun isn't really rocket science, but making one powerful enough to be suitable for a battleship is a challenge we can't yet meet.

Bitcoin doomed as a payment system and its novelty will fade, says Federal Reserve Board of Governors member
Re: Gold
It's not even good as a reserve, when markets tanked last year, bitcoin tanked twice as much. Gold on the other hand did quite nicely. It helps that gold actually exists and has real world uses, though of course the value of gold also relies on speculation for a good chunk of it's value.
Re: It's the usefulness
It actually wouldn't be that hard to enforce.
If the g7, or better yet the g20 all forbid any crypto-related activities by their banks, and forbid them from even dealing with foreign banks that do, then crypto is dead.
And then there is the Bank for International Settlements, if they forbid members from any crypto transactions then it's dead.

Now that China has all but banned cryptocurrencies, GPU prices are falling like Bitcoin
Re: I am no lover of the Chinese political system
I doubt there is a high enough concentration of miners anywhere for them to be a factor in planning new power generation.
But let's assume there is. So you suggest the run during off-peak hours? How long do you want bitcoin transactions to take? They are already stupidly slow, this will just make it even slower.
Re: Oh, Irony...
Sometimes it takes a dictatorship to get things done.
When China decides to start some massive infrastructure project then it gets done before most western countries could have finished arguing about it.
And then we have the pandemic. When the Chinese government says stay home, people stay home. When we tell people to stay home we get all the whiny toddlers out complaining about their freedoms.

"The planet thanks the banning of mining!"
Yes, I always have to laugh when people talk about green, carbon free mining. There is a finite amount of green energy available, so if you waste some of it on something stupid like crypto mining then it's not available for some other more worthy use. And then there are the huge amount of resource wasted in all the technology that goes in to mining, that is not helping the planet any, though it's making plenty of money for the GPU makers

Sure but with those 100 cents I could buy a donut last month, I can still buy a donut today, next month I'll still be able to buy a donut and it ten years I may need to kick in an extra quarter for that donut.
On the other hand last month you could buy a Lexus with a bitcoin, this month maybe a Honda, next month will it be a 1972 Lada or a Ferrari? Who knows? The answer is no one, and that's just one reason why it's not a currency

Canadian province's supreme court orders Dell to pay nearly $500,000 to sales rep fired in his twilight years
Re: 64 years old, $390K retirement package
It surprising that it even got that far. Here in Canada all it usually takes to improve a low-ball severance package is a letter from a lawyer. Most companies know they are won't get away with it and will just pay up the going rate. In IT, at his age and with his experience it should have been in the range of 18-24 months.

Re: Masks and the Flu
Pre-covid there were at least a couple of universal flu vaccines in clinical trials. If they pan out then we'll always be ready regardless of which strains becomes most prevalent each year. But covid probably slowed down the clinical trials, it must be hard to test when there are so few people getting the flu.
Interestingly I recently read that according to the latest data there is a chance that we may have lost a couple of strains of the flu as there have been no reported cases anywhere in the past year.
It may just be that the people getting those strains weren't tested, but regardless flu infections have plummeted due to all the Covid measures. And I expect them not to rebound to normal levels right away as people are likely to stick with the extra hygiene measures for a while yet.
It is with a heavy heart that we must tell you America's richest continue to pay not quite as much tax as you do
A big factor in the crazy real estate prices in many countries is the stupidly low interest rates. We've had almost free money for over a decade. They should have been normalizing rates long ago but governments everywhere are afraid of slowing down the economy, and as a consequence not being re-elected.
The low rates are also a big reason behind the crazy stock markets. You can't make money elsewhere because the rates are so low, so people turn to the stock markets. Even people that shouldn't be in stocks. This leads to the stock markets going up because the stock markets are going up, not because there is any real basis justifying the prices.
There are many possible solutions to the problem, but none will happen.
- A wealth tax, 1% per year on assets over $100 million.
- Ban share buybacks and tax companies that hold too much cash. That will force them to spend it or payout dividends, and then tax dividend income as regular income, no special breaks.
- Fully tax all capital gains as income after some small lifetime maximum has been reached. The only exception would be for investing directly in a company, not when investing in the secondary market

Just look at his latest excuse for cancelling a premium Tesla model.
He said the base model is so good that you don't need the premium version. As range is one of, if not the main issue with EVs for most people you'd think a 1/3 increase in range is substantial enough that many people would care quite a lot, so I'm not buying it. The more likely reason is that they can't hit the targeted range, or at least not at the prices they were trying to sell it for.
