Remember SoftRAM 95? Compression app claimed to double memory in Windows but actually did nothing at all

Re: "Windows' registry doesn't need cleaning"

> if you're doing a fresh install of Windows every few years.

Now I tend to do one very 6 moths. Back then a lot more.

It scares me when people are afraid of a reinstall and would rather have software make it worse.

A reinstall is a lot easier than uninastalling the shit you have installed, and yes I include myself thatg does not install a lot. Faster metghod of new install is faster. Of course things I need to keep are on other drives (mostly) and the ssd games are backed up so magically appear to the installers without downloading.

Firefox 89: Can this redesign stem browser's decline?

Re: New tab design

With all the fuss I thought they had murdered endangered monkeys to make the new tabs!

But yes I think they are an improvement. Unlike most things where it hobbles dekstop to make mobile use "better" this improves desktop use. I have space here, use it! Just a pity most websites want to look like a tall tree in the middle of the page for some reason! (yes it's that mobile thing again).

Carrot007

Re: Not another UI redesign please!

That would be a reason to not use it IMO.

Faking it by default is a bad option.

I would just not uise the broken sites. They are probably not important.

Re: We need Firefox to keep going

Meh, another chomium effort! No thanks.

Edge is there for that! (yeah yeah, but it is there so... And I don't use it much).

I do use some browsers for odd sppecific purposes though so if I needed another who knows what I would go for! (beyond the specific edge use of netflix and signing up for soem things becuase i have fifrefox locked down and it breaks applications often, I also use pale moon for soem things (just to keep it seperate)).

No cards, thanks, we're contactless-less: UK supermarket giants hit by card payment TITSUP*

Carrot007

Indeed it is unclear.

Maybe the RNG gods just went bad for coop and morrions and it was time for everybody to use a chip and pin refresh operation (or some glitch made it so).

Contactless does not work forever and the appropriate response to it failing is not to try again, but to use a chip/pin payment.

From my point of view if it's no cards then it's no go. It occured to my coop 6 odd months ago (equipment failure), but they had the sense to put up a sign on the door to deter you away rather than waste your time (and the cash point still worked). But really, come on can they not fall back on offline transactions? No, becuase the processors passed the fraud reponsibilioty back onto the shop rather than the processor so they won;t take the risk. I used to love those imprint machines too!

Re: ...not even a separate partition for /home.

Sorry. My important files are on another disk.

/home is not. it's just a place full of shit anyway.

Like windows idea of why I should put files I ignore it.

I'll manage my files, the OS can mange its own. That way a fresh install is never an issue if I juist feel like one.

(and yes on linux or windows there are severl important configs on the os drive, these I back up on another drive also).

The idea of using a known mountpoint/palce the os knows about for anything is outdated and ridiculous.

However 4:3. Never has there been such a monitor unless they started recently 5:4 maybe.

Re: "We were caught quite off guard"

> The piece of software I hate the most is Windows Me

Only idiots used it. Win 2000 came out first so there was no reason to use it. Hell I'd have moved to NT4 if it had DX support. Yes I played lot's of game. Yes win 2000 worked fine for it.

> and Vista. Some days I hate Windows Vista more

Nothing wrong with vista. I guess the orig needed a lot of painful configuring but SP1 was fine. Vista was the last MS OS I actually bought! Why? Because I needed a 64 bit OS and XP (the OS we all laughed at and kept using win 2000 for as long as we could) 64 bit was only ever a unsupported tech preview.

Re: How did we get here exactly?

> LCDs created the need for a soundbar

No that was rewmoving the bezel.

My old 720 lcd with bezel had great sound.

I missed the really crap era where they thought back facinf was a good idea! (your neighbours will love you for it ;-) )

Now they are ok, down facing thoughthe thinness does not help.

If only they could just puit a bezel at the bottom and have decent speakers and a budlge at the back at the bottom.

Oh yes, they can.

Why don't they. Well my current 50 inch LG $K TV being about half the cost (or maybe even less) than my old 720 LG. They needed to find a way to claw bakc the cost. The soundbars probably have a 95% markup.

Re: Actually...

> so I never the horrible and confusing Fisher Price interface

You never used XP? (or you did and turned off the theme?)

Yes ther FPI refers to XP and never to 8.

8 was just, BAG OF SHIT.

But they fixed it in win 10 beta (aka 8.1).

Re: Consumer Rights?

> Given that, in the UK at least, there is a right to a partial refund for up to 6 years if the goods "do not last for a reasonable length of time"

Were you reading legislation drunk again?

You have a right to bring a complaint within 6 years of purchase. There is no specified time that a item should last. That is left up to common sense/the courts.

Now I would find 2 years to be reasonable for most chromebooks (they are cheap, yet also overpriced). However the ridiculous costing ones I would expect to last at least 6 years. But I'm sure they are also supported as long.

Now this is why nobody likes car analagies.

Your linked picture is not of a BS standard plug.

The eath pin is required to be metal. Even if it is not used. Not that anyone seems to care these days.

You should install smart meters even if they're dumb, says flack

Carrot007

> nowhere near bright enough

Sucks to be you buying underpowered bulbs.

Moved house last year so all bulbs here are now LED (excepting 1 CFL I had left that I used for one of the lights i put in the loft).

A 6 or 7.5 watt led is much brighter that old bulbs were. And a 4 watt GU10 seems a much better repalcement for all the 50 watt halogen gu10's that came with the multi light fitting i put up and all the halogen gu10's dies within 6 months as usual. The leds are still running and have had no problems.

And FWIW all my LED's are ASDA branded. However I do look to see who made them and only grab if it's a good one/ Maybe some of the cheap ones are not. I guess some people cannot cope with the fact that a led bulb cost more that old bulbs used to and buys low watt or crap.

Not to mention leds come in any colour range you want.

Re: It was damn cold

> No chance of smart gas meter in our house as no chance of signal where meter is sited

The gas meter not having power (running off battery for obvious reasons) is slaved to the electric and sends the electric the reading every minute or so.

So unless your gas meter is in a faraday cage you should be ok.

No one cares about the monitor after 5 minutes.

And you are aware that the clip on monitors and really shit at low usage levels? A real smart meter is not, but even then you unpluf the unit after a day or so.

Unhappy

VLC is great and I use it whereever I can. However there is something up with the OSX version.

It may just be performace. When playing HD stuff (I only go for 720 since it is an original intel macbook) I get occasional pausing and stuttering. I also note the machien does not heat up so it appears not to be hitting anything near max cpu usage.

i have recently installed mplayer instead and get no such issues, however at times the machine does get hot and the fan comes on as expected.

Apple will 'own games industry'

Carrot007
WTF?

You mean own A "Games Industry"

There really needs to be some sort of distinction beetween games and distractions.

Games to me are big and involved.

Distractions were always available on computers as well but they are certainly not worth mentioning in the same manor as real games. Games they may be but only in the same way a Fiat Panda and the QE2 are both vechicles.

As much as media likes to shove unrelated things together it makes no sense.

There wil lalways be a real games market. It's just not as big as the distractions market anymore.
