Astronomers map largest ever zone of dark matter

No. That's called science. You come up with theories based upon what you've seen in experiments, and then try to do experiments which will provide evidence for/against the theory. Things in Astrophysics are just a bit messed up because we've evidence for things that act in certain ways (for example dark matter and dark energy) but we've not got much evidence yet for what they are. By thinking what makes sense from what we do know you can hopefully come up with ways to test it.

'Well actually'

It's not harmful in small quantities, but ingesting more than 10Kg or so at once will probably have all sorts of dangerous and toxic effects.

EU cloud data can be secretly accessed by US authorities

Err

No shit, sherlock. If you're worried over this sort of thing, avoid US companies, and ideally companies with any slight US presence.

I have to give you credit, that's actually a really interesting idea.

'Indestructible' rootkit enslaves 4.5m PCs in 3 months

Too big

I'm talking more from intuition from knowledge, but surely it'd be more likely to just mess up the MBR than just stop the rootkit installing? Admittedly that tells you something's up, but by then it's probably too late.

Not really...

I'm sure a nice orbiting Shuttle would be able to do anything about an approaching asteroid. Oh, wait, I think there might be an issue there.

Ditto this for a lot of ethics issues in biology - notably stem cells.

Cheaper for who?

I'm sure any Apple shops with tens or hundreds of machines will greatly look forward to 40-400 GB downloads, and the associated bandwidth costs.

Troll?

Not to say that I have no trust in the Reg, but I do find it a bit dubious that something so supposedly thought through seems to have nothing online except months/years old speculation. I can't help but wondering if this is really just a well-written (and actually possibly true) experiment.

Er, no wonder they kept getting in

If you just restore things to exactly how they were, then that doesn't really count as locking the attackers out to me - unless they're using something which is difficult to pull off, they can just compromise you the exact same way again.
