Re: I just don't get it.

You do realise that those "millions" spent on Mars wouldnt do a single bit of good in fighting any of the things on Earth you mention. Hell NASA's entire budget is not even a rounding error on the US Government's budget report. You want to complain about wasted money, try looking at the trillions spent on the world militaries. 1% of their budgets could do a hell of a lot, and would still dwarf NASA's budgets thousands of times over. But those for some reason are untouchable.

And without NASA and it's miniscule budgets you wouldnt have half of your modcons. We get that you "dont get it". So why dont you let the adults in the room discuss the great Science being done, the things we're all learning by NASA having troubles with this drilling, and you can go do your virtue signalling elsewhere. <Amazon Manager>: Absolutely. we did absolutely nothing illegal, and did not interfere in any way with the vote. <Interviewer>: It's been claimed that the crocodiles were not wild but came from a nearby crocodile farm.

<Interviewer>: Its been claimed that those crocodiles actively prevented people from voting in the election.

<Amazon Manager>: I assure you, those crocodiles have no opinion on unions one way or the other. And to make such a claim is absurd. So I'll be ending this interview now, goodbye....

So it's the games fault for the child's education suffering. Nothing at all to do with the bad parenting that allowed the kid to spend ridiculous hours playing and not making them do their homework, go to bed at reasonable hours, etc.?

Yep all Tencent's fault. Totally.

I was (and still am) a gamer. I played a lot as a kid, but it never caused any problems with my education, because my parents made sure I went to bed at a reasonable time, made sure I came to the table for meals, made sure that my homework was finished before I was allowed to play. Also not having the PC in my room, meant I couldnt sneakily get up and play in the night (well I probably could have, but the temptation wasnt there).

Gaming is no different to any other past time - done to excess, anything can be bad for you. And like most things that kids to do excess, bad parenting in allowing it to be done to excess is usually the main cause. So maybe China, if it really cared about the effect of gaming on kids, should be looking into the problem of bad parenting first, rather than just blaming the games...

Yes because Shoreditch and Canary wharf are sooooo far away from Central London.

7 stops on the Jubilee line gets you from Westminster to Canary Wharf.

9 Stops on the Circle/District line gets you to Liverpool Street which coupled with a 10minute walk gets you to Shoreditch high street.

So maybe 20 minutes travel time total. Considering that no one below the rank of Executive lives within 5km of Westminster and as such your average workers are already coming from somewhere else in London, which probably has better connections to Liverpool Street/Shoreditch or Canary Wharf, then I doubt you would see a mass exodus as if you were moving to say Royal Tunbridge Wells (for example).

A couple of funny ones I can remember hearing from mates

One German mate of mine was interviewing with a British firm and they wanted to check up on his technical English abilities (apparently talking to him in the interview wasnt enough). So they handed him a one page Technical Report in English about something or other and asked "Can you read and understand this report?". He looked it over, and then declared with just a hint of smugness "Of course!", before handing the document back. Apparently the response was a stunned "Umm OK, next question...". Apparently they'd been expecting him to read out and then explain it to them. He did end up getting the job after all too.

Another mate of mine had organised a telephone interview with a top firm on the other side of the pond, for a friday morning. On the Tuesday, he headed down to London for his brothers birthday and around 4am the next morning, he got a call from the firm asking if he would be able to do the interview in about 2 hours time instead. He rather stupidly agreed. So after an all night bender, and with no sleep he proceeded to have the telephone interview. Needless to say he did not end up getting the job. The lesson to take away from that, there really are times when you just have to say sorry, but No that's not an option.

lglethal Silver badge
Go

I've had two interviews that stick in my mind.

The first was for a contracting firm, where they told me up front there would be 2 telephone interviews (I was living in a different country at the time and this was before the days of video conferencing) followed by an in person interview if the other 2 went well. No Problem, they were up front about it. The first Telephone interview would be with my would-be manager, the second with HR and a company Executive (to test company fit i guess). I had the first telephone interview and it was great, manager and I got on swimmingly.

The next day I got a call to say I had the job, they'd be sending me the contract in the post today, and could I please start next week. And yes I did take the job, moved country and was in place the week later as requested only to find out they werent ready for me (they did pay me for that time even though they couldnt actually get me to start work, but thats a whole other story...

The second was actually not a job interview, but a firm that would be using our contracting firm, wanted to interview the engineers that would actually be doing the work to check that they actually knew their stuff (smart, no?). So a dozen of us engineers are sitting around a table facing a handful of their staff, and they started going around the table, really grilling people. It got to me, the lead guy asked me one question with an extremely smug look on his face which he must have thought was a really hard, killer of a question, but which happened to be something I'd been working on not more than a week before. 30 seconds into my detailed explanation of the answer and with a shocked look on his face, he simply cut me off with a "You're fine. Next!" and moved on.

If you ask a question of someone in an interview, you really should not be shocked when they know the answer. Thankfully, I never needed to work with any of the people aksing the questions and the engineers at the firm where top drawer. So all good! :)

"In addition, the use of third party inks invalidates the warranty of the printer."

This probably also goes someway to explaining why people stick with the higher priced "original" inks. Printers are notoriously unreliable. If you have a relatively expensive printer, having a working warranty is an important consideration.

You might get cheaper ink, but if the printer than fails, and they refuse the warranty, you'll be significantly more out of pocket. That they can waive the warranty away like that just because of the ink used is really something that needs to be fixed in legislation. Imagine if the car company's tried to fix it so that if you bought one of their cars, you had to stick to one brand of petrol, or you invalidate your warranty. People would be in uproar (not to mention prices would skyrocket like ink prices have!).

Re: Being in the wrong

Lets say it all once again - Tax Avoidance is not illegal. Tax evasion is illegal. And when firms cross that line they get hit hard. That's why they pay large sums of money to accountants to go as far up to that line as they can without crossing it.

Should the tax laws be better written to reduce the amount of tax avoidance that goes on, abso-f%&kin-lutely, but is that not just "playing whack-a-mole while having a legislative diarrhea"?

Illegal drugs are illegal, why shouldnt the governments go after them? If the collective will of a nation decides certain drugs should be made legal (e.g. Marijuana in the Netherlands), then it will happen. But what do you suggest? Make all drugs legal? You really want a world where Ice (Crystal Meth for Americans) is legal and available to everyone? I certainly dont. Should some drugs be made legal and restricted like alcohol and cigarettes, in my opinion yes (Marijuana, and Ecstacy would be my first two legal choices). But I dont think for a minute that would solve all our crime problems.

As well as to all of the scam artists and thieves out there? Complete with your address and the amount of hours you work (a good indication of when they can consider you might not be at home)?

Your neighbours might just complain about the poor state of your fence ("Considering how much money your making, you think could take a bit better care of it, no?") or try to hit you up for a loan.

But the Ne'er do wells out there will pay close attention, when it comes to knowing how much you earn, what you might have in your house, and when your likely to be working. That's ripe conditions for becoming a target.

So yes, knowing how much civil servants earn would be nice from a making sure we taxpayers are getting our money's worth (sorry, I mean how much we're getting shafted by), but for the individuals concerned it carries significant risks if not done carefully and properly.

That was written in February, when both Astra Zeneca and Biontech were fully past there Phase 3 trials.

Or if you'd prefer it from the horses mouth, from the WHO: https://www.who.int/publications/m/item/draft-landscape-of-covid-19-candidate-vaccines

Download the Vaccine Tracker spreadsheet and you can see (as of 16/7), all of the vaccines in use or in development, which phases they have completed, and a lot more info.

Basically, EVERY Vaccine available in the US or the EU has passed all 4 phases of their clinical Trials. They are not experimental medicines. And by not getting a vaccine and spouting that nonsense, you've allowed yourself to believe utter bollocks. So stop repeating it. Go and read up, get away from Facebook and Youtube, and learn the facts. And then go and get vaccinated, to rptect yourself and those you love.

I am actually honestly curious why some people are against mandatory vaccination? I mean your use of the term "militate" when talking about mandatory vaccination, implies strongly that you are against it, so can you explain why?

I'm not trying to call you out or be rude, but I am honestly curious. Most of the responses I find on the internet revolve around people claiming personal freedoms, etc. but that seems to conveniently ignore that we have plenty of laws requiring people to do things mandatorily (wear seatbelts, drive under the speed limit, not fire weapons in a built up area, etc.) especially where not obeying the laws can lead to loss of life (either one's own or especially other peoples).

So I'm genuinely curious, why would you not want to make vaccination mandatory?

lglethal Silver badge

Just to add a small addendum to your comment Phil, catching and recovering does not always provide long term immunity from said virus. And the evidence is mounting that the immunity from catching and recovering from Covid is maybe 6 months at most. Vaccines however, can be tailored to provide that long last immunity.

A perfect example is Tetanus. Which catching and recovering from provides pretty much no natural immunity. However, the Tetanus vaccine does provide a long lasting immunity (although you still need a booster shot every 10 years).

Vaccination is the only good way to get the virus to drop in the community, not to mention avoiding the potential side effects of getting infected (e.g. long covid, and internal organ damage).

lglethal Silver badge

Unfortuately it is a problem for the collective.

Because those idiots end up in our collective hospitals taking up intensive care beds and causing our hospital staff to be overworked. That means they potentially make mistakes elsewhere and for other people who havent been stupid.

On top of that, you have things like insurance costs which are averaged over the whole community which because of their hospitalisation drives all of our prices up. Sick people dont work, production goes down, costs of goods go up for everyone.

And finally, there are people out there that cant be vaccinated, not out of some stupid belief, but because medically they're either allergic to something in the vaccine, or their immune systems are already damaged and cant withstand the vaccine. The idiots not getting vaccinated, puts these peoples very lives at risk, and that again harms the entire community.

So whilst its nice to think that idiots not getting vaccinated is just hurting themselves, the truth is, it risks other peoples lives, directly and indirectly, and drives prices up for EVERYONE in the community. For that reason, these people need to be educated, to realise how stupid they're being, and how much they are costing their communities...
