Scaremongering

Tell me do

What paperwork do empty vehicles need ?

I'm a trucker that goes to Dover every week. Nigh 0n 99% of the wagons heading for Dover are Continental vehicles returning EMPTY.

Why would Customs detain EMPTY vehicles ?

That's right

They wont.

Are they going to mandate either the banning or compulsory use of Eco-Roll then ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JVhdVoEHeQ

Why Ban ?

Because it's downright dangerous. Basically what happens is the truck shuts off power when it has climbed the hill by about 95% and uses kinetics to crest the hill and to return back to speed.

Sounds clever doesn't it ?

Until you realise that the truck you just powered by going uphill and who has just flashed you in has now had to stomp on the anchors because your wagon has gone into Eco-Roll right in front of him/Her and it's not fitted to theirs !

Yes your roadspeed drops like the proverbial brick thrown in the air ! (With no brakes lights as you're not braking)

Now lets add in that your company has disabled all manual functions of the automatic gearbox.

ie: No Kickdown and no pre shifting down in readiness for that hill you know you're going to slow down on. How many following wagons do you think who CAN downshift in readiness and expect you to be doing the same suddenly find themselves up your ringpiece and looking to Get the heck out into Lane 2 pronto ?

And now for Lane depart. Lol what a joke. We get false readings from the "now removed" Lick & Stick road studs from former roadworks and the Anti-Collision" brakes activate full braking when there's nothing there !

A UK digital driving licence: What could possibly go wrong?

Outcast

Lolz

I'm (Now) a 55 year old trucker. When you get to the age of 45 you have to go or a FULL medical to make sure you're not going to die at the wheel (or less likely anyway).

I received my "Section 88" at the beginning of March. My Licence expired the day before my 55th birthday (DOB 20th April) so I quickly had my medical and sent it all off.

3 weeks later the replacement still hadn’t arrived so I did the online check and it showed my LGV had expired.

So I phoned them up and was made to feel like a naughty schoolboy for asking about it.

Basically they said "You've got nothing medical wrong with you so you're ok to drive" But that won't wash when you're stopped by DVSA at 02:15 on a rainy monday morning and they check online and... Your licence has expired !

They impound the wagon !! So our company wouldn't let me out on the road. Miraculously the shunter had a load bar fall on him and was off for a fortnight so I covered in the yard for him.

The licence still hadn't arrived or the online version updated two weeks afterwards and the shunter was due back. I had to get them to Fax our company a "Section 88" cover note for me.

I got my shiny licence back last week with my nice UK flag on it !!

I really don't hold any faith in the licence being digital !!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAOdBI6uoIA

Yes the intro music is wrong and it WAS precisely what you expected it to be with that intro. Google muted the entire thing so I chose that licence free from their list just for something. Obviously the dvd they got is ok.

No I don't expect anyone to watch more than 2 mins of that !!

Openshot suffers from HORRIFIC timeline redraw delays when using MTS files and you really have to be careful lining up the cuts/Transitions. Kdenlive is superior in this sense because you can use proxy clips.

Both crash if you give it long enough (as does ANY NLE) so ..Save, Save, Save as you go.

I installed Lightworks when it was beta but it has one heck of a learning curve and then you find out that to actually render out to something you can use requires plenty deneros to cross palms

2012: The year that netbooks DIED

Outcast
Linux

The real reason

I didn't bother reading all the comments to apologies if it has been said..

Asus wanted to release a small form factor laptop with limited RAM & SSD. Asus wanted XP on it but Microsoft wanted to kill XP and was pushing Vista. Vista was too pricey and bloated.

So Asus threatened to ship them with Linux installed. Messers Ballmer and co laughed and said "go ahead, it'll flop".

Asus sold EVERY SINGLE One. Returns were on a par with any windows offering. It was a runaway success.

Microsoft had to back peddle before Linux got traction with the public. So they extended the life of XP and gave Asus the deal it had wanted originally.

Now a campaign of disinformation was started.

ie:

Why would you want a tiny 8mb SSD when for the same price you can have a 130gb ? In other words, the usual Ms tactic of newer, faster, bigger (more expensive)

This of course completely defeated the whole concept of the Netbook being a cheap but robust (no spinning HD) computing device.

Asus were no fools either. They deliberately chose Xandros instead of any major distro so as to not completely alienate MS.

Yup, Microsoft wanted this little upstart dead. Looks like they finally won.

Oh and I discovered where the reboot option is....

Select Logout, then click on the power button (top right of screen) then select Shutdown.. THEN you get a choice of reboot, Shutdown or Cancel !

I am slowly beginning to fettle 11:10 to something I may be able to put up with but why go around the block just to cross the street ?

Outcast

Upgrade or downgrade ?

I upgraded last night and was surprised that it completed the upgrade without glitches. So.. on reboot I was expecting Unity and that's what I got. I've been using Gnome 2 "Classic" mode but as this is the "chosen path" I figured I might as well give it a fair suck of the sauce bottle.

So, after reboot what did I find ?

No graphic drivers activated. Not a biggy but on activation.... Where's the restart option in the cog (me menu ?) .. Seriously, there's only Shutdown.

Next... I nipped round corner T'shop for some Doritos and when I got back I discovered the screen locked, s'funny, I had that set to 45 mins. Oh well... I'll have to reset it again... except.... Where is it ? It was in screensavers but that's gone... I used that "Dash" effort to search... I clicked around clicking on likely candidates.. Nope.. I give in ... Give me a clue !!

I'll give this a month and if still not happy I'm gonna change over to Peppermint.
