Re: Oh come on...

Agenda 21 is a non-binding, voluntarily implemented action plan of the United Nations with regard to sustainable development. It is a product of the Earth Summit (UN Conference on Environment and Development) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992.

FBI won't jail future US president over private email server

Florida1920

Re: It isn't over yet

Funny how they find time to interrogate the FBI director and Atty General, but can't seem to pass legislation to halt the spread of the Zika virus. Thinking it over, maybe pre-empting Congress isn't such a bad idea. As long as we don't have to keep paying them.

Florida1920

It isn't over yet

The hope by some that Clinton's use of a private email server would somehow provide a silver bullet to kill her candidacy has however died.

GOP TO INVESTIGATE FBI DECISION ON CLINTON EMAILS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Angry House Republicans are announcing plans to investigate FBI Director James Comey's decision against pressing criminal charges for Hillary Clinton over her handling of classified emails. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Comey's decision defies explanation and leaves many questions unanswered. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called Comey to testify on Thursday, and the Judiciary panel announced that Attorney General Loretta Lynch would appear next week.

The GOP has to keep this in the news so Trump can use it against Clinton. Fox News [sic] will trumpet it and the Trumpettes will eat it up. GOP Congress-critters can't see what's coming. If you believe what he says, a Trump presidency will render both houses of Congress redundant, because Trump "has a very good brain" and he will make his own decisions. He don't need no stinking advice and consent.

That said, Clinton was reckless and that's not a good prerequisite for a president either.

Sociology student gets a First for dissertation on Kardashians

Context

Fortunately, the vast majority of Reg readers see through the Kardashian business. But they wouldn't be so widely known if a large segment of America's population didn't track their every movement, and the possible puns are intended.

This paper about the negative influence of the K Klan on American culture is an indictment of that culture as well. That's what People Who Care About These Things should be looking at. Is it surprising that the Kardashian phenomenon exists within the same time and space as Trump's presidential candidacy, or the rising number and scope of mass shootings?

Don't oversimplify and say the entire country is sick; not everyone loves the Kardashians, Trump or AR-15 rifles. Two out of three are getting way more media attention than they deserve though. How many Americans have been seduced by these false prophets with big butts and big mouths? The student's thesis is a springboard for a necessary discussion, so I'm glad to see it. Yeah, maybe studying sociology is "easier" than learning to code, but that doesn't make it any less valuable. Sooner or later you have to get up from your keyboard and walk out into the real world.

Florida1920

A logical progression stemming from illogical thinking

Published job requirements sometimes snowed me. Having "experience" with some obscure markup language (there were others before HTML) in no way proved you could do anything useful with it. And most of the requirements were subjects a dab hand could pick up in a day or less. But being unable to parse actual ability, corporate drones created arbitrary hurdles to thin the pack. If you cleared them, presumably it was your looks or your tie that got you in, because for many contracts I never was asked to present completed work; it was all blah-blah-blah.

LinkedIn and the other social (?) media hurdles you poor working stiffs have to endure today are simply extensions of The Way We've Always Done It. MS ownership of LinkedIn is a problem, but LinkedIn is only a symptom of a deeper problem within the tech community: Pointy-haired bosses and clueless HR types looking for hiring shortcuts and hoping for the best.

Silicon Valley granddad and HP boss-killer Tom Perkins dies aged 84

Re: A character all right

You really have no clue what you are talking about.

Okay, there have been a lot of murderous regimes. Please read my second post. What makes Nazi Germany stand alone is that they're the regime most often used in comparison with whatever the current speaker doesn't like -- but can't adequately define and thus he or she falls back on that comparison.

I certainly meant no disrespect for any other group that suffered under any other brutal regime; accusing me of doing so or not having a clue about human capacity for evil is a pretty weak argument in itself. You could have made your point very well without going ad hominem. Perkins used Nazi pogroms as his example, and that's what I responded to. But thanks for the history lesson.

Florida1920

Re: A character all right

Pol Pot and Stalin were just as evil; so was Pinochet, though he had a smaller scope to work with. Thing is, Pol Pot, Stalin, Pinochet, Idi Amin and the rest are not held up for comparison. Hitler and the Nazis are, and too frequently. Comparing anything going on in this country today to that lot is an affront to those who suffered under them. Surely no 1-percenter is at risk of anything coming from Occupy that even approaches the Holocaust. We need to be careful to keep history in perspective. Saying Occupy is akin to Nazi pogroms is essentially suggesting the pogroms were nothing more than a few Nazis doing some street theater.

Florida1920

A character all right

Comparing "Occupy" to Nazi pogroms? FFFFFF

IMO, Hitler and the Nazis stand alone in their brutality and inhumanity. Any attempt to compare any current group or event with him and them tells me the person doing so has no grasp either of history or whatever it is they're attacking.

Furthermore, amassing great wealth is no sure indicator of moral or intellectual superiority. Ladies and gents, I give you Donald Trump.

Too bad Perkins had to go out that way.

Microsoft phone support contractors told to hang up after 15 minutes

Dell tech support survivor

In 2000 a contractor hired me to do Dell consumer tech support at a big call center. ME had just come out and some customers had 98SE and coupons for a free upgrade. Which often didn't go well. We were supposed to maintain an 18-minute average. If a call went past that, even if you were on the right track, a 'roamer' came creeping around to harass you. The roamers were usually people who couldn't do decent call work, but rather than fire them they turned them into major annoyances. There were a few nights where I thought a rep was going to get medieval with a roamer who wouldn't stay away. Then one day, the calls stopped coming. I had a 65-mile one-way commute -- fortunately I didn't relocate! -- and after showing up several times only to be told to wait to punch in, I gave it up. But I learned a lot about PCs, and built my own the next time I needed one. Dude, I never got a Dell after that!

IE and Graphics head Microsoft's Patch Tuesday critical list

Florida1920

Re: Don't understand

Wow, they finally showed up. No nasty ones and the Azerbaijan time thing got dropped. Guess I'm not on MS's Priority list for updates. Got asked to update IE11 again. Skipped that one, too.

Florida1920

Don't understand

My laptop is set for WU notifications but manual-only installation. The OS checks every morning when I take it out of Sleep mode. Every time MS releases a raft of updates, as now, it takes a couple of days before I see them, whether "Important" or not. Yesterday (Tuesday) all I got was an update to Windows Defender's pattern files and the usual update to IE 11. As I've never even started IE on this WIN 7 SP1 machine, it must contain an earlier version of IE. You'd think the updater would see that, unless the security update also contains an IE-version update.

Here's something else I don't understand. The package sizes of the IE 11 updates vary 10-30 MB up and down, week to week. Given I've never installed any, I don't get why the sizes keep changing. Maybe once I unleashed that one it would see all the precedents were missing and tie me up for days getting IE 11 installed and up to date. Never gonna happen.

Blocking ads? Smaller digital publishers are smacked the hardest

Florida1920
Flame

How do they know?

I'd like to know how they came up with that number. If people aren't seeing ads and aren't clicking on them, how can you know they wouldn't just click to another site in frustration if they had to view the ads?

Some major sites are shooting themselves in the foot, too. Yesterday, someone sent me a link to a Stephen Colbert skit from when he was still on Comedy Central. Despite disabling ScriptBlock and uBlock Origin (current Chrome and FF browser versions), all I could see (in Flash no less!) was the ad that preceded the segment. The segment refused to run. But the Comedy Central site in the UK was able to deliver the piece -- and without an ad. If a friend hadn't suggested the segment (Kim Jong Un inspected a lube machine) I sure wouldn't have bothered. There were a slew of Javascripts running on both sites, surely not for my benefit.
