Tech Support stories go back a long way...

My Granddad was a TV technician when they were still a new technology.

Just before the coronation of EQ2 in '52 he had a lot of support calls. One call was from a person who had an intermittent problem with their TV, my Granddad said they would need to bring it in so he could do a soak test on it. They declined saying it was going to be too expensive. A couple of weeks later he gets a call from them to say that the TV was now green, so he decided to pop around and have a look. He found the TV had mould on it, it turned out they had decided to soak test it themselves in the bath.

We've had the same 5 Top Stories now for what seems like ages, all bland Australian ones. Surly there are other news from around the world that could class as a top story or are we only going to get Australian top stories from now o

I originally started reading The Register for its humour and no bullshit style, there are lots of Oz bland PR fluff publications around, we don't need another one.

Re: It isn't just IT

That's not much of a price difference. The difference could be down to other factors like the demand for ice skating and population density. The opposite could be true of, say a surf training business.

But I agree it not just IT, I bought a box set of season 1-4 of Doctor Who for a Christmas present from the UK, cost plus shipping it came to $68, the cheapest I could find here in Australia was at JB HiFi at $264!

I hope something does come of this enquiry.

Not because it doesn't support H.264 but because it doesn't support Flash.

So until Firefox supports Flash or the web converts to HTML5, I won't be using it.

As the Reg says, it's not the GST

A few months ago I bought a box set of the first four seasons of Doctor Who as a Christmas present for someone. Here in Australia the best price was at JB HiFi at about $287. In the end I bought it from Amazon UK for $64 with free shipping.

There is no way that adding 10% GST on to it would have changed my mind in purchasing from amazon UK!

I've also bought the BluRay Boxset of the complete Harry Potter films for $49 (free shipping again), in JB HiFi it's for sale for $139 + postage. Oh, I also got the BluRay edition of the extended Lord of the Rings trilogy but I've forgotten how much I didn't spend buying that here :-).

Prices and exchange rates have changed since these purchases but there is no way that a 10% GST explains the price difference. Just look at that Doctor Who boxed set S1-4, $287 vs $64, I mean WTF! Someone, somewhere is gouging...
