Re: If you can't stand the heat
"In real life I am a total dick head"
I've heard that about you... ;-)

@Gordon Pryra
While I don't generally disagree with what you've written, my personal experience is that people who are dickheads online tend also to be dickheads in real life.
This experience was garnered while running the online community for a club, 75%l of the contributors were personally known to me.
For example, the old saw about all BMW/Mercedes/Audi drivers (delete /insert as you like) are all dicks, I suspect you'll find that said drivers will be dicks regardless of the model of their car.
"Or are consumers too stupid to notice when they're being fleeced, and would go with the "$25 printer that costs you $100 to put ink in" model?"
In fairness this is really only the case at the very cheap end of the market; when you pay more for your printer the ink costs less as a proportion of the printers price
Consumers could make this problem go away by being more prepared to pay the true cost of the actual printer. As long as companies sell their stuff as loss leaders then this practice will continue.
Or do people really believe that the shiny all singing, all dancing MFP they've just bought really does cost 35 quid to make/market/distribute? Truth is I think if Lexmark have all but given you a printer you probably should buy your ink from them after all they need to make a profit in order to make the printer they've just given you!
NB nothing I've said indicates approval of the way the printer companies behave
no one has pointed out the fact that no matter what flavour of government we get after next week the same shit politicians will still occupy both sides of the house.
Seriously, May and co are horrible but anyone who believes Corbyn would be any better is a deluded idiot.
we need to purge our entire political "class" (as in class of children) and find some adults.
"wait for a sales drone to 'eventually' saunter up and try to sell me something... and blah blah blah "
yeah because the poor schmuck trying to make a living needs to have his/her day improved by twunts like you. That sort of behaviour doesn't make you big or clever or admirable... it makes you a twunt.
I manage to do all that you've described without involving some minimum wage flunky just trying to make their way in the world.
"This is preparation for allowing iPlayer access only if you have a TV licence"
Do you have a problem with that?
Whenever I'm asked for an email address that I don't want to give I use [not.today@nothanks.com] weirdly, no one has said anything about it as they write it down but then I doubt the poor till flunky gives a toss one way or the other.
And yet my honor 8 . never fails to sync up with my car, always plays the music I want it to for as long I want it to. The apps I use are all pretty good premium apps that I actually paid money for. I don't have to charge it every single night if I don't want to. I've found the bluetooth LE to be considerably more reliable than my old sony, so horse for course and all that.
Just as an aside why did you feel the need to *exactly* detail the model of your iPhone?
I'd been casting around for a replacement phone form my aging (but still chugging along nicely thank you!) xperia Z1 that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I chose an Honor 8 I'm very pleased with it. It gives excellent performance and battery life. On a recent trip to the states it got a proper hammering (i was doing the full tourist) but I found it easily lasting the full day. It's a good looking phone, I even like the UI which was updated to v5 shortly after I got the phone and I've found it lightweight and intuitive.
wouldn't hesitate to buy another or recommend them.
""white middle aged man""
I travel on my own a lot. I can be certain that at least once on my (usually) four trips through airport security I will be stopped and searched thoroughly. generally I'm asked to unpack all my camera gear and demonstrate it all working as well.
That said I've never had the rubber glove treatment and I've never been asked for passwords etc.
My last trip I was searched as I was leaving my holiday destination so forgive me if I take all the "profiling" stuff with a pinch of salt although presumably I'm the subject of a different kind of profiling.
Single man, frequent flyer, nearly always alone, carrying large amount of "gear" plus big suitcase in the hold.(which had also been searched this time)
"In the US they aren't disabled, but they are Accessible, which I always find to be a useful feature in a toilet."
Hmmm.... whereas the American embassy in Hong Kong has a big sign on the door that says "Handicapped Toilet" not to mention a big sign on a gate that says "Handicapped Access"
"Who has a garage with space in it for a car?"
I do... and not only that I actually keep a car in it.
I've never understood why people fill their garages with junk and then leave their next most expensive purchase sitting on the drive.
Try as I might I simply cannot see why so many people have bought into this connected to a distant server model of IoT. I *really* don't understand
"The next dishwasher that I buy will certainly be connected to the Internet of Things ... because I won't have any choice."
Or rather would like to be....
And while I'm sure there will come a time when it being connected is required by the T&C's I doubt we're quite there yet.
I decided to give Sky Fibre ago when I was looking for a new BB supplier. I had slower, less reliable connections from their "Superfast Fibre" than I ever had under ADSL, they made the mistake of making a change such that it gave me an early out of my year long contract and I kicked them so far into touch I'm not sure they've landed yet. I went back ADSL via Plusnet and my BB has been rock solid ever since.
I'd just like to say that commentards that use words like "meatbags" and "fleshies" are not nearly as cool as they think they are... quite the opposite in fact.... and if they don't think they're cool they must realise they're not in the slightest bit original either.
unlike Space X who are very cool indeed.
MY local branch of santander installed new touch screen machines recently... (putting aside the fact that you can apparently use NFC to withdraw cash I dunno, I've never tried)
when you put your card in, it almost immediately says "You normally withdraw this amount xx do you want to do that?" The text carries a label that says "Quick cash" so you'd think it would be quick...
ho ho ho ... how very naive of you......
Do you want a receipt "No",
Do you want to email a receipt? "Nope"
Do you want a text message receipt? "FFS! Nope"
Do you want any other service? "FFS! Just give me the money you stupid machine!!!"
Which account would you like to use? " ARGHHHH!!!!"
"Sorry, this machine can no longer dispense money"
Seriously, four ferkin times this has happened.. on one memorable occassion it then asked me how much I wanted even though I'd clikced the "quick cash button" before telling me it had no cash to dispense.
I no longer try to use it. I go use another banks machine nowadays
"My gosh you people, how long is your flight?"
My last trip comprised of 12 hours to Hong kong and then 13 hours to Auckland....(the same again on the way back) I'll take my Kobo if you don't mind.
It's got nothing to do with customs and border agents and everything to do with luggage that you wave goodbye to down the conveyor for it to disappear not just from your sight but from your life forever that I'm concerned about. My holidays are mostly for the purposes of taking photgraphs the fact that my gear is insured is neither here nor there. have you ever tried to hire a high end DLSR in the arse end of no where?
"or anyone foolish enough to check-in their DSLR."
I generally have around 2.5k to 3.5k quids worth of DSLR and related bits and bobs when I travel... it never leaves my side. I'd go in the hold before I'd let it go as hold luggage.
Not that I'm affected by this but it makes you wonder how long before it spreads.
I'm going to the states in May to visit some Brit friends who are currently seconded there by their jobs.
No other reason would induce me to go which is a shame because on the whole the Americans I'v interacted with on past visits have been friendly and welcoming hosts.
Because one is shit and the other not so much?
I've got no complaints about plusnet. full stop. Their service has been rock solid, I get the speeds they told me I would, they responded quickly and reasonably to the single compliant about speed I had and they bill me exactly as much as they said they would plus any phone calls I make using my landline (very few!)
I've never quite understood why Sony can make a phone that will last the thick end of 1.5 days and yet no one else seems to be able to.
I don't limit my use, I don't limit what apps are doing.. I send texts, read web pages, use "social media" I make phone calls, I play games and I get 1.5 days if use. out of the Box... no shenanigans at all and further more I'm talking about an Xperia Z1 here so they've been able to do it for quite some time.
why can't other manufacturers do it?
"kids were seeing boob's using magazine's"
hedgerow porn .... there was nothing as exciting as finding some hedge porn.
There's no skill to finding porn these days, as a kid I had to seek it out! We all had our favourite spots for finding it.
I remember the thrill I got from buying my first ever jazz mag... I was about 16 and it was Men Only since you ask. They're missing out these days... looking at porn is a right of passage, just because MP's all look at goat shagger weekly, doesn't mean that everyone will.
