Brit mobile phone users want the Moon on a stick but then stay on same networks for aeons

Field Commander A9

Good for you westerners.

Switching network carrier is a trivial action for you already.

In China, you have to change to a new phone number when switching to another network carrier.

You want a Google-free Android?

UPnP joins the 'just turn it off on consumer devices, already' club

Field Commander A9

Having UPnP open on the Internet facing side

No, it not that UPnP itself that is opened on the Internet facing side. It's that some router default to have their web admin interface accessible on the Internet facing side, so they can be easily hacked.

THEN there's the problem that many routers don't properly sanitize UPnP rules which made the reflected attack possible.

So many use upnp advise because no-one understand what an IP address or a port is ...

Too right.

For the average Joe, they bought a console to have hassle-free gaming experience.

"Fuck that! If I wanted to fiddle with things, I'd have bought a stupid computer instead!" is the default mindset.

ICANN takes Whois begging bowl to Europe, comes back empty

Field Commander A9

Re: 'the rest of the world will develop an ICANN-replacement that they can live with.'

Sorry to break this to you but Russia and China will be firmly backing ICANN's practice on this.

Reflection of a QR code on PoS scanner used to own mobile payments

Field Commander A9

Re: Tokens "...when a card is swiped..."

We Chinese are used to use the word "swipe" for all kinds of transaction forms, including but not limited to NFC, MST, QR code, contact chip and sonic.

Re: Tokens "...when a card is swiped..."

Not all PoS support bonking yet here in China. And since bonking is processed by a different (and less mature) system than MST here in China, it's very often to run into PoS that can only work with MST or contact chip.

No. The Chinese version of Excel 2016 explicitly commented "Comma Separated" after the .csv extension.

You GNOME it: Windows and Apple devs get a compelling reason to turn to Linux

Field Commander A9

Re: snap/flatpak/.appimage

Really? Even my computerly-challenged wife installed Ubuntu on her machine _without my help!_

These kind of users are better of with an iPad Pro than an actual PC.

Ask for refund?

The Complete Care package for my Alienware 15R2 (i7-6700HQ) expires on April 2018. Do you think I can ask Dell for a refund for my laptop for this reason?

That was fast... unlike old iPhones: Apple sued for slowing down mobes

Field Commander A9

Re: That probably explains..

Because your daughter wants a even shinier new iPhone every year and needed a excuse to retire the old one.

Erase 2017 from your brain. Face ID never happened. The Notch is an illusion

Field Commander A9

Re: at least one Samsung which had a feature ..

That feature puzzles me. If you're looking at your phone for prolonged time without touching it, then you're either watching videos or reading ebooks, and those apps already routinely prevent screen lock.

Or maybe just a lazy way to workaround potential font/code page/rendering engine issues?

A certain millennial turned 30 recently: Welcome to middle age, Microsoft Excel v2

Field Commander A9

Re: "I have to say Excel is one thing Microsoft got right."

"...then waited an age for it to figure out what it's doing? (Even on a modern 8 core "business" laptop)?"

"business" laptops have SHIT CPUs (and even shittier cooling), no matter how many cores they've got. You need a mobile workstation (or at the very least a gaming laptop) to do proper number crunching.

So like what? An external USB HDD casing never occurred to you?

Any sane tinker in your shoes would have bought an SSD together with a USB HDD casing. Put the SSD in as the boot drive and put your old HDD into the USB casing for extra data space.
