Microsoft: Many workers are stuck on old computers and should probably upgrade

KegRaider
FAIL

Is that so Microsoft?

And here I am on my Raspbery Pi 400 keyboard. I've been using it for for quite some time, using it to connect to my work via the Citrix Workspace. I can then RDP to any of the systems/servers I administer, as well as using SCCM remote tools to resolve issues with end users also working from home.

I have found no slowdowns whatsoever, even running Teams directly via Snap, apart from not being able to share my desktop from the RaspbianOS. I'd like to see most people working from home use a low powered device BYOD connecting to the office infrastructure using a VDI. But hey, whatever MS you do you. I'll keep using this energy saving machine for work, and keep my Windows powered gaming rig for games.

Bon sang! French hospital contracts 6,000 PC-locking ransomware infection

KegRaider

Pity the Ransomware writers weren't critically injured

... and needed urgent attention at a hospital that was crippled by their shiteware. It would be an absolute shame if they had to suffer while waiting for hospital systems to dispense their pain relief drugs! Greed is a nasty trait.

When the IT department speaks, users listen. Or face the consequences

KegRaider

They still don't listen

I have been a sysadmin for the best part of 3 decades, and the Lusers seem to have an ability to block out what we say. Either that or email rules that delete all important system notification about to affect them.

I just don't care anymore, ignorance on their part = ignorance on my part. I send the messages, schedule the outages. Notifications go out frequently. If they forget, tough titties

Read the tech data.

If you follow the link to the researchers website, they list it all. They even have the app icon.

I have 2 Lenovo laptop tablet things with Atom processors. Low power, decent SSD performance, but slow as hell for normal operations. As a consequence, they rarely get used for anything but Netflix.

Spotify wants to go public but can't find Ed Sheeran (to pay him)

KegRaider

Why am i paying spotify if they don't pass something back?

I may as well just go back to finding the music elsewhere, at least it was only one person getting ripped of then....the music company. Now I'm getting ripped off too! LOL

Ex-Google recruiter: I was fired for opposing hiring caps on white, Asian male nerds

KegRaider

Diversity needs to stop

Now don't get me wrong, diversity is good. However, in the workforce, you shouldn't hire someone because of the 'features' they posess. You hire them on their ability. If that happens to be a white female, then great. If it's an Asian male, then great. Do NOT hire because it ticks a stupid box for the mental HR department.

I would say if there was any 'intelligent' life, they would have long gone before getting into that lunch zone. However, if they were primative thugs like ourselves, I hope it was quick and painless for them.

Re: PC world

1) FOUR replacements of a computer: the idiot operator BIOS level was too low to understand that it is a tray for a disc, not an ejectable cup holder.

Cup holder?! Rubbish! It works fine as a cup holder. It's only when you use it as a step ladder than the bloody cheap plastic drawers let go!

AMD, Intel hate Nvidia so much they're building a laptop chip to spite it

KegRaider

Re: "Nvidia's dominance"?

Exactly!

My neighbour asked if his computer could run the HTC Vive after I was demoing my toy to him. They get rather insulted by hysterical laughter, and pointing out that their $2000 AIO machine is just a glorified tablet. They don't understand that a $1000 graphics card (alone) is what is required to play games with any sort of resolution and framerates.

Re: haters gonna hate

Except when it comes to crypto mining. AMD kick Nv's ring on that.

Fire brigade called to free man's bits from titanium ring's grip

Re: I keep seeing these

"Dremel cutting discs that will cut titanium and other hard metals, on anything a couple of millimeters thick or more it's going to use up a few cuttings discs and take quite a bit of time, which this chap didn't have."

Not to mention the heat build up of said cutting disc on the band!!! Probably needed the fire department nearby to extinguish the phallic flames!

Sure, we could replace FTNN, says nbn™, if you let the unwired wait even longer for broadband

KegRaider
Thumb Down

And here we go again.

The brainiacs already dropped FTTP/FTTH in favor of the cheaper FTTN. My suburb was enabled last week, and they have already managed to botch my request up....here's to waiting another 2 or so weeks to have it botched again.

The morons driving this project should be shot. I read on whirlpool and even the Telstra crowdsource wiki pages, about the complaints about FTTN's speed, or lack thereof. Many FTTN connections are in fact, slower than their previous ADSL connections.

Want a Windows 10 update? Don't go to Microsoft ... please

KegRaider

Re: Yep

It would be good if it actually worked however. I turn off the bottom button to share with others on the internet, since my crappy Aussie ADSL doesn't like outbound traffic at full noise.

KegRaider

Didn't actually think that switch worked.

Since the 7 or 8 machines on my home network ALWAYS go and download patches to the internet despite having the "Updates from more than one place" has been enabled for me since the early evaluation days.

We tried using Windows 10 for real work and ... oh, the horror

Odd, I find it a lot better than Windows 8. I have replaced all of my Windows 7 machines at home (5), with the Insider Preview (started playing in December '14), and the latest Build 10162 looks amazing. Not a fanboy, but I personally cannot wait for the final product.

KegRaider

I have installed Steam, Origin, Blizzard and UPlay and have had zero gaming issues. Not sure what all the complaints are about. The interface is rather intuitive, if you spend a few minutes playing around.

Better Technology?

Would the huge 1 degree deviation be due to the better quality sensors we are now using? I mean, surely the digital probes are a lot more accurate than the old mercury bulbs. And who's to say the the bulb didn't slip down the scale for a few years skewing the data :)

I'm not denying that we should be more aware of our interaction with the environment, but comparing temperatures from the 1800's is about as useful as comparing TV screen resolutions from the same eras.

Microsoft vs Google patent ding dong gets stuck on repeat

Linux

I think you overlooked the statement.

Hi mate,

I believe what Magnetic was referring to was the "Software Patents" which always seem to drag such heated arguements. Patents that are not for a physical medium. I would definately like to see the software patents thrown into a different category, and would support a 3-5 year holding policy. As for medical research, I'll keep my folding PC's running looking for that cure for cancer :)

Just ask all the Linux supporters what they think about software patents.....

Sony implicates Anonymous in PlayStation Network hack

Now if my PC had stolen a SONY song....

I'm more than certain that me blaming someone hacking in for stealing the song would NOT go down in a court of law. SONY are a$$holes and I can honestly say that I haven't bought a single product from them since the original 7801 Playstation. Nor will I in the future, they aren't worthy of my money.

Pirate

Slanted view of the report.

I agree with above. If he was a sole 'hacker' who pulled his 360 apart to tinker with it, then I'd say it was an unfair case. HOWEVER, he was selling modified consoles, so therefore advocating piracy. What did he expect MicroSoft to do, send him a thankyou card? Seriously, he's gonna do some time and deserves to.

I'm all for tinkering, and I do on all my consoles and PC's etc (except the 360, i love LIVE too much). I don't believe anyone should be selling a service to modify consoles. If the end user isn't clever enough to tinker, what right do they have in expecting mod's be done for them.
