Happy 25th birthday, Game Boy!

RAMChYLD

"Because we're poor and I hate you!"

Ashen's phrase is pretty much what my parents told me when I asked for a Game Boy, and they said no, and I asked why :(

I did eventually save up for a Game Boy Color, but as it turns out, I could only afford two games for it, and the second one I actually traded for another game :/ Guess they were right.

Microsoft Research adds interactivity to Windows 8 Live Tiles

RAMChYLD

I hate Live tiles

Seriously, when will M$ take a clue that I do not want Metro, and I do not want Live tiles, especially those that pull data from the net? My telco will have a field day and gleefully pile up data charges with this since those tiles will be counting towards my ridiculous 3GB wireless data quota (in case you're thinking of asking me to switch telcos, tough- all the telcos charge the same quota at similar rates).

Btw, in case you're wondering, I don't use Widgets in Win7 either for the same reason.

(my third issue with Win8 is that XBox Live isn't available in Malaysia which renders any Win8 machine sold here unable to be used for gaming, but that's for another time).

BlackBerry not afraid to throw its mobe biz under a bus, says CEO Chen

RAMChYLD

Re: Chen: Give Us What We Want

He could've done the obvious.

Give BB10 a "legacy compatibility layer" to run BB7 apps. That's the one thing keeping the BB10 from taking off- people just can't get the apps they want off Blackberry World easily (for example, Opera refuses to support BB10 natively or put the Android version of Opera Mini (which does run well on BB10 if sideloaded) on Blackberry World, but continues supporting Opera Mini for BB7 which cannot be downloaded or run on BB10 devices because of lack of BB7 support in the OS. Adding BB7 support to the OS would do it good, especially if companies have invested in BB7 versions of their enterprise in-house program and find it a hassle to port to BB10.

After all that's said, the BB7 runtime is a modified J2ME runtime. If they can go all-out to implement a runtime for Android, why can't they do the same for BB7?

Spy-happy Condoleezza Rice joins Dropbox board as privacy adviser

RAMChYLD

Re: Easy to beef up the privacy of Drobox, Google Drive, etc

But the problem is, most people use Dropbox as a temporary solution to transfer files between devices and PC in lieu of the manufacturers making a universal standard to allow that to happen. For example, sending photos taken on my fondleslab to my Blackberry- the only common file transfer protocol that exists between this two is Dropbox. The blackberry can't use Airdrop, Google Drive or iCloud, and the fondleslab doesn't support Bluetooth OBEX and Bluetooth FTP. Yes, Blackberry could've built in Google Drive access to their file manager like they did with Dropbox (and it would've been useful too since the device also comes with Documents to Go), but didn't for whatever reason.

On that, I suppose I should start looking for a different way to send files from my fondleslab to my PC or Blackberry. Stupid Apple, I normally use Bluetooth OBEX...

Am i wrong to think that the MPAssA and RIAssA now has unrestricted access to my dropbox now that this idiot is onboard?

RAMChYLD

re: But ... but ... but ...

It's all in the boot script. If you code the scripts right, the difference would be negligible, down to a few milliseconds. For example, adding an ampersand in the end of the daemon invocation incantation in the Apache and Samba initscripts actually sped my boot speed up by a factor of five back in the SysV days. And to be honest, it also rings true for BSD- my OpenBSD box chews through the rc.local file as well thanks to well-placed ampersands.

You gotta fork the initscript to the background, or it will slow down as the system is waiting for the daemon to initialize before proceeding.

RAMChYLD

Re: Yadda yadda yadda

I concur. Disabling a service in SysV just requires a chmod a-x on the symlink at the appropriate runlevel. Systemd puzzles me. A lot. Services sometimes turn itself back on with no intervention, and getting a desktop manager service itself to start is spooky voodoo if you install a minimal command line system first and the X components and desktop managers later. More than once I made a text only installation and later install a desktop environment, and the bloody desktop manager doesn't start. This is especially true in OpenSuSE and Sabayon where I needed to poke around and eventually managed to figure out that I need to make a symlink somewhere into systemd.

Re: Q10

Well, the thing that puzzles me is why they just can't throw in a BB7 compatibility layer. They can throw in an Android one, and BB7 apps are also mostly Java ME anyway.

That said, love my Q5. It may be quite old like the Q10, but it definitely does what I need it to do, and it has shown that even though it's just dual core, it can pack quite a punch. Hope the Q20 does much more and has much more storage.

Microsoft's ALREADY telling of bugs in Fondle-Office for iPad

RAMChYLD

I don't think they share the same code. Office mobile was better written and only consumes a comparatively paltry 96.3MB according to my fondleslab. On the other hand, Office Mobile doesn't do PowerPoint and OneNote.

For comparison, each one of the iPad Office app in itsef (they're separate apps, compared to the iPhone offering which is a one-app suite) is over 400MB in size.

RAMChYLD

As huge as you think it is.

Word: 457MB

Excel: 433MB

PowerPoint: 419MB

OneNote: 406MB

Honestly, tho, I've seen bigger. Way bigger (Toontastic and The Oregon Trail were gigabyte-sized offenders that I had on the fondleslab before jetsamming them in favor of more storage).

That said, it even had problems authenticating with my Office 365 account (only have it because I need it for work). Turns out that I had to pass on activating it on first run, then only use the activate button after setting it up for trial mode.

WinXP? Which maniac thought it was a good idea to put XP on ATMs? Even slot makers have the sanity to put Linux into their slots. Saw one Bally machine booting Linux (albeit an ancient 2.2 kernel) at a casino sometime back, when a service tech maintained the machine and then reboot.

Surely if Linux is good enough for slots, it would be good enough for ATMs?

Re: It depends on the distro...

+1. I had no trouble teaching my aunt and uncles to use Ubuntu with XFCE configured such that it resembles the XP Desktop. As long as the programs they're used to are available there is no problem (they're already used to Firefox and VLC anyway, so the switch to Linux was less painful than those who used a lot of Windows-exclusive software. The only program that required them to learn a lot more was LibreOffice).

That said, the biggest problem with switching from Windows to Linux is still games. Sure, Valve has moved to launch most of their games in Linux, but unless Loki Software comes back from beyond the grave and start porting the games again, I doubt if we're ever going to see SimCity 2013 or StarCraft II on the platform :(

(Yes, I know SimCity 2013 sucks and that both EA and Activision are evil and I shouldn't have bought their games. But SimCity 2013 was like one of those really nasty accidents- on one hand, you can't deny it's grisly. On the other hand, you just can't take your eyes off it. Wine? I tried SimCity 2013 in Wine- it gave me some "unable to activate the game for your platform" bullshit).

Apple flops out latest OS X Mavericks beta, hopes sound+graphics sorted

Re: New OSX' always breaks audio

I agree with this. Afaik 10.5.7 broke support for several external audio devices, including the USB Soundblaster Extigy. To get it working again you have to buy a third party driver that costs €44. Which IMO is ridiculous.

I have to pay €133 just to have my Dell touchscreen to work. I have to pay €44 to get my old USB soundblaster to work (and it worked out of the box prior to Mac OS X 10.5.7). Why can't Apple just make these things work out of the box? Linux can do it, why not Apple?

Aaah-CHOOO! Brit boffins say WiFi can 'sneeze' malware

RAMChYLD

Seems too stretched out to me

Given that there are at least 3 known hardware architectures used for routers (MIPS, ARM and the occasional X86 on enterprise-class routers), and given that each router has customizations that make their firmware incompatible with each other and even different revisions of the same model of the router (notice how there are thousands of variants of DD-WRT), how does the virus know which trojaned firmware to load onto which router? I think more APs would be bricked than become seeded with the trojan.

Wii got it WRONG: How do you solve a problem like Nintendo?

RAMChYLD

How to solve?

Firstly, get rid of the region coding nonsense. No one wants region coding anymore, and the Internet hates it. Even M$ has ditched region coding on the XBone. The sooner Nintendo realizes that sales would be better if they dropped region coding, the better.

Secondly, sell globally. Limiting the eShop to only one third of the world isn't a very smart idea, even Sony has PSN coverage in over 90% of countries worldwide. Microsoft's coverage is only slightly better than Nintendo and they're still in deep. Nintendo's coverage... Only the Americas, Europe, Australia, NZ, Japan and Korea. What about the rest of Asia (which has high demand for Nintendo consoles due to the popularity of Pokemon and Monster Hunter) or Middle East? What about South Africa?

We wanted to give Nintendo our money. Nintendo tells us that our money isn't good enough for them. They're practically begging for this outcome I'm afraid.

Friends don't do tech support for friends running Windows XP

RAMChYLD

How about

I tell my friends to migrate over to Linux instead? Converted three people to Ubuntu and will happily convert more. The only reason I still have one or two Windows PC (and even then running Win7, I refuse to touch Win8 especially after it's racist side reared it's ugly head in the form of region locking on the XBox Games folder) is because some game companies won't develop for Linux and put in all sorts of stupid DRM to make their game fail in Wine (I'm looking at you, EA!). Will happily dump Win7 for good once M$ discontinues Win7 support. As for game companies like ActiBlizz and EA, well, if you want to continue receiving my monies, support Linux!

Woz he talking about? Apple co-founder wants iPhones to run Android

RAMChYLD

I say he has a point

Frankly, iOS 7 is rubbish.

It's UI looked like something I designed in Primary 2 on a machine equipped with CGA graphics. Like M$ forced the stupid little metro UI down Apple's throat and Apple obliged.

It also has problems forgetting things when I ask it to. For example, I did a mass exodus of my music on my iPad two days ago after it ran out of space and I needed to load some newer tunes into it. It stubbornly wouldn't erase and let me erase Electric Light Orchestra's Mr. Blue Sky from it's memory, from within iTunes or directly, until I followed the Apple forum's convoluted method of forcing the song to reload from the cloud then delete, a few times. Completely wasted a good part of my day just to get rid of a song I no longer want but the iPad for some reason insist on keeping.

Re: N900

If RIM makes a N900 form factor device complete with slide out keyboard and updated with today's power and a higher res screen, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

CryptoLocker creeps lure victims with fake Adobe, Microsoft activation codes

RAMChYLD

Re: Adobe4Numpty

Thing is, Gimp is "too unlazy". To create outlined text, I have to create a mask from the text, grow the selection by a selected number of pixels, create a new layer, manually fill the layer in, and then adjust the layer position. On Photoshop, it can be done by just selecting the text and using the text effects tool.

And Dreamweaver is still years ahead of the best webpage designer software for Linux (come to think of it, the only designer I've ever used under Linux was Seamonkey's composer, and that one's so basic that you can only create static webpages- a stalled legacy from Netscape Gold that was never improved upon). The only other designers I've heard of are text based with no WYSIWYG abilities.

And don't get me started about creating Flash movies in Linux. Unless you care to enlighten me on a tool in Linux that allows me to create Flash files and then possibly export it to AVI or MP4?

Not that I'm supporting Microsoft or Adobe. I actually advocate Linux and have converted three people, and have no less than three Unice boxes (two Linux and one OpenBSD). I've already dumped Photoshop for Gimp and Illustrator for Inkscape. The problem here is, there's just no equivalent in some applications, and in others (my example being Gimp), it's just harder to do something. I also don't like flash-filled sites that are unusable on an iPad either, but then there's no other way I know of to create super-surreal videos set to strange foreign music for my own amusement under Linux. Scratch? I wanted to give it a try, but it doesn't work for me- something about PulseAudio crashing it.

It's an option. Don't like it? Buy the fondleslab version meant for touch-enabled devices which will keep the start screen. The rest of us will gladly buy the "classic desktop" version as we feel the start screen is a waste of resources (surely the widgets in there draw data from my punitive 6GB-a-month mobile network quota, and draws CPU power and memory as it updates in the background whether It's being shown or not!)

However, if ReactOS can hit the big 1.0 before then, I'd gladly take it over Win8.2!

Honestly, the day I'd go back to GNOME is the day the devs put back all the features they removed and reinstated the start menu. What's with these people and the vapid "start screen" interface? At least KDE has different interfaces for touch devices and desktops.

But honestly, I'll stick to XFCE. At least it doesn't drain on the GPUs like KDE or GNOME that allows that few extra frames per second out of games on Steam.
