01/01/80

Jan 1st 1980 is the date that jumps out when I see it. Maybe I'm too young to have seen when things defaulted to 01/01/70. But feels lke I've been doing this stuff forever...

So, for youngsters, no doubt soon their alarm date wiill be 01/01/00

It's happening! Official retro Thinkpad lappy spotted in the wild

PgUp PgDn

Are the keys either side of the cursor up (with logos that look bit like the electric window switches in the car) PgUp and Down? I bought a thinkpad usb keyboard to use with crappy work laptop purely because it had dedicated page up and down (and didn't fill my entire desk). None of this Fn+other key bollocks for oft used keys. Shame if they got rid of them.

Whip Donovan Adventures

After I saw an article about this in the torygraph a few years ago, and put some money in, I kept hoping that it would made it's funding target

Perhaps it will now, though not in the way that I'd hoped.

Lotus cc:Mail

Some (many) years ago in the DOS days there was a problem with cc:Mail and printing. After some investigation (thanks Norton utilities disk editor!) it came down to their print driver using US letter and the printers supporting A4. Obviously their support wasn't any support. But strangely when the story made the weekly comics of the time with the question of what exactly we were getting in the European version at near 1:1 exchange rate (vs probably 2:1 commercial rates) they changed the hardcoded 'LETTER' papersize into something more appropriate for us Europeans...

Hmm, Vodafone aren't renown for doing anything well. And to 99% (my guess) of the general public, google does good enough maps.

If it wasn't for the utilities and corporates that OS has over a barrel for authorative maps of Blighty there wouldn't be much left of it. VHS vs Betamax and all that, the best isn't what people want.

Dumb display

Why is is that a dumb display/panel is so much more expensive than the same thing with added tuners, smart bits and assorted crap added?

I don't believe that the scale of manufacture of one vs the other makes much difference. I thought that the panels are mostly bought in and assembly is automated with lines that can change easily. Distribution costs will be the same. A few more skus on the inventory isn't going to add much either.

All my sources are separate boxes so I can chop and change. With one big mother of a remote control :) Just need a display for them for when the current one dies.

Seems like it's just a mark up for calling dumb a 'commercial' display.

"does not buy anything that has been advertised to me"

I used to think that. But then realised that pretty much everything is advertised (or marketed) one way or another. It would be nice to boycott those manufacturers who have so much money they can sponsor premier league but I doubt that would leave many options for new telly.

opentrv

shame that opentrv seems dead. No updates to website for ages now. I'd quite like something where I can do the zones in software or have the radiator in the office come on in the morning but not the evening. But not nest. I'd rather heat an empty room all evening than use nest of vipers.

BBC telly tax drops onto telly-free households. Cough up, iPlayer fans

andy 28

TV licensing = protection racket

They keep very quiet about how much of the fee they keep for 'administration'.

If everyone (~99.9x%) is going to have to pay the license then someone should look at cheaper ways of collecting it. Council tax is paid per household and has systems for rebates and discounts that could be applied for those who just listen to the radio. I believe that in AUS it's added to the income tax. Neither of which are perfect but do get rid of the scum at TV Licensing

Re: passing era of native apps, downloads and a ‘fat device’

Android 4.something through to 5.1 (don't know about 6) you can disable all the google apps without needing root or the like. When I got my Z1C I was going to put CM on it but didn't once I'd stopped all the google stuff. Fdroid for apps. And battery lasts a week now.

I'd have given ff os a run if it was available like CM without having to buy specific hardware.

more Three in Touch versus Home Signal

Three in touch is an app so I'd need a google account to download it.

Home signal is a bit of hardware that I don't need a google account for.

Been mentioned on here before that the app is shonky whereas the box just has to relay packets.

I know which I'd use.

Re: Print article

'we still support print article'. You're suggesting that being able to print loads of pages of crap layout and adverts is comparable to a proper readable and printable view?

It was bad enough in the last redesign when the 'print' button at the top of the article got replaced by a twee icon somewhere down the left of the page. And now there's nothing. The only progress I can see is for advertisers, not readers. And without readers....

Some of us have a shit work network. Articles were readable by lining them up in printable view. The first might have finished loading by the time the last was queued up. But no more. It seems that I can spend ages scrolling around clicking next, next, next. Or move on. Not as if there's Lester to make us laugh, except for a few recipes.

Blimey, so there is. Thanks! Wouldn't have found it in a million years.

So long as there's a print button there can be as many (or few!) pages as you like!

andy 28
Unhappy

and the print option?

There used to be a 'print' button to make it more 'work friendly' and save having to do the next page, next page thing every few paragraphs.

Not worth fighting through all the non article bits to read anything in hardware now and looks like the other sections are going the same way.

Humax HDR-Fox T2 Freeview HD DVR

FAIL

never again

Having the misfortune to have a Humax 9300 thingy, I'll never own any more of their kit. Ever. Unreliable pos - whole programs it doesn't bother to record, starts or ends missed (yeah, could be broadcasters fault but I don't care anymore), freezes (and yes firmware is up to date). Oh yes, the nice way it wipes your entire recording schedule without even a warning if you rescan the channels. And more.
