'A sledgehammer to crack a nut': Charities slam UK voter ID trials

Yves Kurisaki

This is not about the government trying to prevent voter fraud.

This is a Tory government trying to take votes away from Labour.

Boring. The phone business has lost the plot and Google is making it worse

Yves Kurisaki

Let's face it..

Let's face it, thin bezels and under-screen fingerprint readers is about all we can expect for the next 5 years, apart from CPUs getting faster and more efficient. What else do people expect?

OnePlus privacy shock: So, the cool Chinese smartphones slurp an alarming amount of data

I don't care

I don't care. Google has been slurping up a million times more personal data.

The OP5 is the best phone I've ever owned.

I do have to say, the negative OP articles have conveniently followed the Pixel 2 launches. Someone trying to steal some customers from OP, me thinks.

Bye bye MP3: You sucked the life out of music. But vinyl is just as warped

Yves Kurisaki

Re: MP3

Erm.. I bet 95% of people still use it and that will not change very quickly at all

Yves Kurisaki

What's the point of mp3?

Most modern music has the dynamic range of a sheet of paper, with more compression than the bottom of the Mariana Trench. I don't think mp3 makes much difference there.

MacBook Pro owners complain of short batt life – so Apple kills batt life clock in macOS

Battery life is crap only just now? I have a mid 2015 model (retina) and battery life is shit on that one too. It doesn't even come close to my previous MBPs or MB Airs.

Doesn't stop the corporate media from spreading the crap though.

Huawei Nova: A pleasant surprise in a 5-inch phone

Yves Kurisaki

So it's a mediocre phone with a slow processor, a mediocre camera and mid-range specs all around.. but that is supposed to take market away from the iPhone? Are you smoking crack?

It's going to steal market space from the other mediocre phones, not from iPhones.

And since the article points it out, I use a OnePlus 3T which kicks the shit out of that mediocre phone, while costing the same. It's not the same size as the iPhone, but it could actually steal iPhone users. Me being one of them, just having ditched my iPhone 7.

Why Apple's adaptive Touch Bar will flop

Yves Kurisaki

Re: Never been an apple customer

Were you going to make a point or are you under the impression anyone gives a flying f**k about your laptop and what specs it has?

Because, you know, I just bought a new gas cooker. 7 Burners / Zones, 4 Cavities, Conventional Main Cavity Type, Dimensions - H90 x W100 x D60. Great energy rating. It combines traditional design and modern features to really give my kitchen the wow factor. This full gas model boasts powerful cooking and puts you in complete control of the temperature at all times. Both conventional ovens boast a 51 litre capacity and there’s also a dedicated grill, perfect if you’re looking for a healthy alternative to frying. The 7 burner gas hob with wok burner offers plenty of space for your pans, whether they’re large or small. The main cavity has catalytic liners on its sides to make cleaning the oven that bit easier. My previous cooker only had 5 burners (that's two less) and had a lower energy rating. I haven't seen much difference yet in my gas bills, but I haven't been cooking that much lately, so maybe that's the reason. It's a grey one, although I would have preferred maroon, which fits in better with the rest of the kitchen. I'm upgrading it with WiFi and USB and the aim is to hook it up to Alexa and have it prepare my breakfast eggs before I get downstairs in the morning.

Should i go for three eggs or two? My cholesterol is slightly on the high side, so maybe two is enough?

Yves Kurisaki

Oh dear Apple

I'm a seasoned MacOS/iOS user, but I think Apple are losing the plot lately. The new home button on the iPhone 7 is a pain, and this new MacBook Pro touch bar looks like a major mistake. People are creatures of habit, and changing a part of your keyboard layout doesn't sound like a bright idea to me.

Good God, we've found a Google thing we like – the Pixel iPhone killer

Re: Uh... what?

Have you ever tried using an Android phone without a Google account?

I don't think you understand the concept of 'lock-in'

Yves Kurisaki

So Google finally made an iPhone

It even costs as much as the iPhone.

Where are the "Apple copies everyone but Google is great" evangelists now?

Inside our three-month effort to attend Apple's iPhone 7 launch party

Yves Kurisaki

Yes, Google is sooooo much better.

Not arrogant at all. No lobbying, ever. No influence exerted on the press at all.

And obviously, they don't evade taxes.. imagine!

Much better to use Android and be safe in the knowledge that no one is using you or treating you like a product.

Well done.

Apple's Watch is basically electric perfume

Yves Kurisaki

The current family of smart (phones) devices was built on wave of technological and design improvements, backed up by new services (cloud, etc.). We have reached the peak of that wave now and, after some more digestion, we will start to look at our smart devices as being mostly dumb. A new wave will come, built on connecting services and devices, not on better technology or more specs. The new smart will be in how they all interact. Technically, maybe only battery design will see innovation during that period. Eventually, this wave of new ideas will drive the next wave of technological advance. In my opinion, that's the wave Google is preparing us for, little step by little step.

Quit drooling, fanbois - haven't you SEEN what the iPhone 6 costs?

Yves Kurisaki

How is the iPhone any different from any other top-end mobile phone? They all pretty much cost the same if bought outright and the contracts are just as expensive if bought on a contract.

HUGE iPAD? Maybe. HUGE ADVERTS? That's for SURE

Yves Kurisaki

Re: Adverts.....

I guess you would go for a Google thing then.

You do know what Google's business is based on, do you?

Climate: 'An excuse for tax hikes', scientists 'don't know what they're talking about'

Yves Kurisaki

Scientists do know what they're talking about, but climate change will be used as an excuse for a series of new taxes which will not have any effect at all on climate change. At present, humanity is unable to act at all. It will have to go through real disaster first before anything meaningful will be done,

This has been proved pretty much conclusively by many prominent Bach scholars.

iOS 5 'crashes more apps' than Android

Yves Kurisaki
Thumb Down

Not happy

iOS5 (on a 4S) is the first time I've ever been unhappy with my iPhone. Apps most definitely crash way too often. I don't know if it's the OS or badly programmed iOS5 updates, either way, it shouldn't happen on an iPhone.

And to add to that, the 5.0.1 update has left me with a ridiculously fast draining battery (I managed to fix the battery problems in 5 but no such fixes work in 5.0.1) and constant SIM Failure messages.

No good Apple.

Samsung Android 4.0 smartphone priced for Blighty

Yves Kurisaki

Bonkers

My Nexus S was complete shit. A plastic case that scratched when you looked at it and a battery that drained faster than any phone I've ever owned, even after weeks of hacking and installing ROMs and it was god damn slow compared to my iPhone on top of that. So for the redesigned plastic with 4 year old GPU and a slower CPU we now have to pay £25 more than an iPhone. An iPhone which isn't made of crappy plastic. Absolutely bonkers.

If you have ever experienced the Nexus S you will take 'walled gardens' any time.

Let's at least hope that Icecream Wanky is not as shite as Gingerbread is.
