Crowning glory of GOV.UK websites updated, sparking frontend upgrades

Groaning Ninny

The whole beta thing is bizarre - people actually working on and relying on these services see them as anything but.

These are big and awesome systems that actually impressed me when I first used them. Applying for a passport is EASY now. The "live flood warmings" system is really good, and scales as well as you expect/need.

Groaning Ninny

Re: If they *really* want to improve the experience....

Sounds to me more like they have instances turned off overnight to save money.

Appropriate for the nonprod systems, but production?

The systems I know of are actually pretty damned good - the check for flooding one is used nationally (and deals with traffic spikes nicely) when we get crappy weather, and the password application service is simply awesome.

UK pub chains....

A fair few pub chains offer Work From Pub. Normally include wifi, power, unlimited tea and coffee and may include a lunch and.or beer afterwards.

They also don't include a second screen or anything like an ergonomic working environment.

I'm guessing you're unaware the the 5/3/2nm is not directly related to any physical property, its marketing-speak to show a jump in density and power efficiency.

Totally off topic, another Canadian bank (ANC) keeps sending account info to one of my gmail addresses. Clearly there's no verification going on there. Additionally, I've tried to get them to stop, but any email I send seems to go unnoticed.

Sadly, the account owner keeps going overdrawn, and it's not a lovely thing to see.

Ethiopia sits on 737 Max report but says pilots followed Boeing drills

Well indeed. They didn't think it would happen, so when it did it all went pear shaped. But hey, it's okay now, because with the patch:

Yes, there's nothing illegal about watching the video. That's why people are being told to report it if they see it. Possessing or distributing are quite different.

Dear Britain's mast-fearing Nimbys: Do you want your phone to work or not?

Re: We all thought the same!

Virtue signalling was originally about conspicuously showing one's moral superiority. I'm not doing that. I'm saying this person is behaving like an arse.

Of course, now virtue signalling has become a pretty lazy perjorative to denigrate anyone willing to call out someone's poor behaviour, so if that's how you wish to use the term, go ahead - but I'm afraid the flip side is that you can then be accused of virtue signalling my admitting your own shortcomings (and so being better than me), and so it goes on. Yawn. The OP still behaved like an arse.

Groaning Ninny

Re: We all thought the same!

Count me as being one of the people who only actually thought about #1 and later #2 (to a degree). I'll admit if there were a chance my parcel had been lost I'd care about it, and perhaps I ought to care about the effects on people who've not had their deliveries made.... but no, right now it's immaterial.

Not virtue signalling, I'm afraid, just not being an arse. Some people aren't.

Groaning Ninny

Re: We all thought the same!

Speak for yourself. My first thought was about the people who died, not the replaceable stuff on board.

The cloud won' affect their power (as they'll be waaay above the vast majority of cloud).

Now, would cloud be an issue for what they're looking at? Possibly, although the beauty of these is that unlike a satellite it'll be easier to tell it to look in particular areas and perhaps avoid the cloud. Note an earlier poster wondered if these could be desired to help the OS map non-UK locations, some of which might be a little less occluded.

Such things as "no adblockers", "sign up to read" and this "because of the GDPR" mere;y cut down on the sites I use. There are plently more.

Some of those which actually ask nicely to remove the adblocker (and which don't take the mickey with the ads) get my views and the revenue that's somehow worth.
