If you can read this, your Windows 10 2004 PC really is connected to the internet no matter what the OS claims

TheresaJayne

After the last update all our network connections had turned into Unknown Network and being unknown were classed as Public networks and locked down by the firewall.

We had to use the policy manager to change the default policy to read unkown networks as Private instead, then our static IP machines all went DHCP.

Now this...

(Our network is double natted as we have 16 static ips coming into the building and the generic work network is on one of them, with clients on the other 13)

I remember that at one place we used to have users edit their autoexec.bat and disable all sorts of programs like network connect and anti virus (this was around the time of the "I love you" virus.

We had to hide the Autoexec.bat so what we did was changed it's name from Autoexec.bat to reboot.com but it would work because someone discovered that you could have your autoexec start as follows

REMZZthufex

then the bat script

then some wierd characters at the end which was the reboot.com code (4 bytes only )

then we used the assembler to edit command.com and change the string AUTOEXEC.BAT to REBOOT.COM and it was all ready to go.

Reboot.com rebooted the machine

MOV AL,0Fh

OUT 64H,AL

and the boot script remained hidden.

Better Be Careful

I just realised something, they can force visitors to unlock their phones when entering the usa, lots of people have lastpass, keypass dashlane etc.

If you unlock that (which can be fingerprint unlocked on a phone) they then would have unlimited access to ALL your accounts, addresses and credit cards etc.

Also you have no right to say no. Food fot thought.

Strong-willed field support op holds it together during painful customer call

TheresaJayne

That reminds me

Reminds me of a long time friend who regailed us of this story:

He worked for a comapany that dealt with always on computing back in the 90s, meaning that their database servers were installed in sealed containers, with multiple actual machines , UPS and such all mounted in a shock proof case,

He had a call one day, it went like this.

Client: Hi, our database server has gone down, can you tell us how to bring it back up?

Support: Sure, <security/account checks>, So you say it's down, are you able to tell me what the lights on the panel are showing?

Client: Yes they are "working system lights"

Support: OK?? Can you plug a cable from a laptop to the port on the front, and type the following commands?

Client: Ok it says "Working system details"

Support: Are you sure it's down, the system is reporting full functionality?

Client: Oh The database is working, The building floor collapsed, its in the Basement, Where are the mount points so we can get it craned out!

Support: <Facepalm> "proceeds to explain where to attache cables to the outer container"

UK's Openreach admits 50k premises on 'gigabit-capable' FTTP network can't get gigabit speeds

TheresaJayne

and yet, where i live (within 5 miles of Heathrow) if anyone on our estate wants Broadband they can have a max of 5mb down as there is no FTTC as the cabinets are full and there is no plan to upgrade the area until at least 2025, People are turning to Virgin in their droves and are paying for 100mb/s but they are also only getting ~40mb/s if they are lucky. and yet just 1 mile away in the center of town a single block of flats has HyperOptic offering 1gb broadband, (and there is a T1 linked data center less than a mile from my location, BT think because you have 1mb/s or more that counts as broadband, (for stats my neighbour was paying for 40mb/s and was getting (according to BT and speedtest.net) 1.5mb/s down 0.2 mb/s up as they were 400m from the nearest cabinet (yet there is one against the back garden hedge...)

A Register reader turns the computer room into a socialist paradise

TheresaJayne

Back when I was at college, we were in the first year of a BTEC computing, and we discovered a backdoor on our unix SysV system, we had the mini and about 50 terminals round the area, we used to do password grabbers so when we logged out it gave us a fake login prompt which captured password credentials, But they had set /dev/tty to RWX------ root root meaning to access your own terminal you needed root permissions so they had set the command more to run Set UserID, This meant that at the end of first page it would prompt for next page but you could use commands to go back a page search or even get a cshell !csh

unfortunately because more was suid it would give you a root shell, Knowing this would be quickly found I myself wrote a small C program that worked exactly like su , it would do all the correct logs and such and even allow all the command parameters (the only problem i later found out was that I didnt use fork to spawn the new process) but if you did su to become root and password of CTRL-Y <Enter> it would log you in as root with no logs. We were about to become 2nd years and the sysadmin was about to leave for a new job, and we had been asking him <read pester> for the root password all year. Every time we asked he would say "I've got half a mind to tell you, but Nah!"

On his last day he walked up to us and slipped us a piece of paper,

it had one word on it "mind/2" Mind divided by 2 = half a mind. We could have killed him....

The following year was hectic, and we even managed to get our work done whilst monitoring the system and keeping the 1st years from crashing the system.

When we left apparently the following year, the server would crash / reboot / lockup daily multiple times as the now 2nd years would log in as root and do kill -9 -1 when only meaning to kill their own process, The su hack remained for another 1.5 years until someone senior noticed and they had to completely reload the system from scratch. Oh for a more primitive age, BTW one of the teachers was ex IBM and disagreed with most of us on what should classify hacking, We said if you connect to the modem that was ok but trying to log in when it was obvious it was not the system you were trying to find was a crime, her view was that if you accidentally misdialed the modem the moment the other modem answered you had committed the crime and should be arrested immediately. Needless to say her view was thankfully not followed.

Heres a thought, The other companies hardware is also in part manufactured or assembled in China, wouldnt it be easier to plant bugs/corrupted firmware into these at manufacture. So doing this may have made the US sytems available to the chinese?

I'm a crime-fighter, says FamilyTreeDNA boss after being caught giving folks' DNA data to FBI

TheresaJayne

I actually do not see any problem with this, The FBI doesnt have access to all the data, what they have is the ability to enter the DNA from a crime scene and search the DB with it finding matches or familial matches to help locate criminals. Whats the problem, it just means they can pinpoint someone who commits a crime easily even if they have not had their DNA stored by the police in the past.

About to install the Windows 10 April 2018 Update? You might want to wait a little bit longer

TheresaJayne

this update didnt remove malwarebytes like the last few did,

It inserted a win 10 settings page between the speaker icon on the task bar and into the playback/recording config settings.

My friend had a broken internet protocol which stopped him getting online for a while.

It did disable all my speakers and headsets putting control into a VB Virtual Cable for everything including Communications.

Another of my friends has obtained the Win 7 game pack to play MahJong but every update uninstalls her MalwareBytes and the games pack.

Alexa, please cause the cops to raid my home

TheresaJayne

I had this problem a while ago and its a vunerability in Spotify,

I kept seeing a speaker device available on spotify and it would randomly turn on my spotify and play at 3am in the morning the device is called spotiamb2.0 and it is a remote device that is actually a media player and if you even accidentally connect to it - they can hijack your account and play whatever they want, I had great fun selecting random annoying songs and playing to that device until they went offline, But it took spotify deleting all my devices and resetting my facebook login to be a direct username / password login to stop it.

It's April 2018, and we've had to sit on this Windows 10 Spring Creators Update headline for days

TheresaJayne

Every creators update on my friend's computer has had the following 2 effects

1) uninstall Malwarebytes antimalware (paid version)

2) uninstall the old windows 7 Mahjongg they obtained and installed with a seperate launcher

Indian call centre scammers are targeting BT customers

TheresaJayne

I had one the other day, she asked what i was using to access the internet, I explained i was using an android tablet, an iphone and an amazon dot.

She then tried to get me to go to w3 validator then validate to any website - the default will always show errors even for google.com. she said that was evidence that i had a virus causing problems and i should pay to get it sorted.

This took over 40 minutes and then i just said "you know what you can do? Crawl back under whatever rock you crawled out from under, I am a computer security expert and know you are nothing to do with BT and are trying to scam me out of money. Thank you and Goodbye. I then hung up.

2 minutes later I had a man call me back and tell me to take my phone and shove it where the sun doesnt shine.

I was trying to point out that it isnt just rural, I moved in a large town 2 roads and went from 200mb/s to 2mb/s

TheresaJayne

I live in the middle of slough,

My whole street has no Fibre available - not even ADSL CN21

I get Max 2mb Down 128k up

BT openreach say they have no funds to upgrade it , and the council will not let them upgrade the cabinet.

The cabinet next to me in the other direction has a DSLAM.

They claim also that there are not enough subscribers on the Cabinet to be cost effective to upgrade - there are 2 schools one side of the road meaning only half the subscribers on the street.

Nice to see that they can provide 80mb down on one street and 2mb on the next

CERN staff conduct 'human sacrifice' at supercollider site

You've seen things people wouldn't believe – so tell us your programming horrors

TheresaJayne

I have seen many an issue with the IT in companies i have worked for, Once I was tech support in a company that was infected with the macro viruses that spread through excel, word, etc (back in 1997) and the antivirus found the virus and changed the file so it would not be run (changed startup.dot into startup.vir) unfortunately Office didnt look at any file in the folder just ran ALL files no matter what they were called. - the infection persisted even though the IT dept thought it was all safe.

Another company I worked for we had a huge code base and the key file in the system we were not allowed to touch, - 15000 lines long over 150 lines of import statements at the top, and it runs lots of high traffic websites in the uk.

How French spooks can silently command Siri, Google Now on phones

TheresaJayne

Of course "Hey Siri" only works when the iphone is plugged in and at all other times you have to press and hold the home button so unless this hack can press the button to activate siri it would only work where someone has their iphone plugged into power.

Doctor Who returns to our screens next week – so, WHO is the worst Time Lord of them all?

TheresaJayne

As for the best doctor, Since Tom Baker the Best has been David Tennant. Without a doubt.

Soooo yummy as well.

TheresaJayne

Colin Baker was the worst,

Sylvester McCoy was in my opinion one of the best, the character was perfect, the Script writers were pants.

I loved the interplay of Doctor Versus Ace that personal interchange made that incarnation.

On another note What about the Other Doctor? Peter Cushing also played the doctor in Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.

TalkTalk unveils best results ever – and its share price dips

TheresaJayne

Re: You think the status tracker is bad

When i log in it usually tells me my phone broadband and tv are all not connected (yet they all still work)

TheresaJayne

I have been with talk talk for over a year and i think not one outage (at least whilst i have been at home)

the only annoying thing is they keep calling me up to try and sell me a better package, - i already have their top broadband + minimal phone and normal tv (i dont use anything else)

Unless they can provide GB network to the premises I can't get any better - Tuesday they called 12 times trying to sell me more services (in a 3 hour time scale)

BT slams ‘ludicrous’ Openreach report as Vodafone smirks

Re: Where did the rural internet money go?

sorry Cranleigh is the countries largest village and has fibre, I worked in Cranleigh and we had Dual bonded ADSL giving 40mb down 20mb up from Be.

Plaistow is like 199 houses Cranleigh is a lot larger.

TheresaJayne

Re: Where did the rural internet money go?

When i lived in Ifold (next door to plaistow) we only had 0.5mb down broadband from BT, and we tried to contaks Kijoma, It was a small business and we were told, Sorry there is a tree in the way and that hill over there blocking line of sight to the tranciever, Its essentially somone nearby had a microwave link at their house so if you could see it you could have it. and they also took 6 months to respond to sales calls.

TheresaJayne

Where did the rural internet money go?

Of course BT and openreach are being paid by the government to give broadband to rural villages, Except where there are too few people on the exchange so they say its not worth upgrading the exchange to even provide adsl,

For instance Plaistow Surrey/Sussex border near Dunsfold (where top gear is filmed)

has a max speed of 14400 bps on dialup if any internet providers still offer dialup services.

El Reg reforms the Quid-A-Day Nosh Posse

TheresaJayne

This is quite hard to complete though, I worked out that to eat well for 2 Days will cost me 79p + 9p

Which is half a pack of (insert supermarket name here) Value Spaghetti + (Supermarket Name) Value Chicken in white sauce,

Cook the spaghetti up,

Drain and add chicken in sauce,

Serve half

Put other half in fridge for tomorrow.

So that would give me an extra £1.12 for other stuff..

In america the police report option will just allow people to find the local donut shop...

You don't report the location of a police car travelling down the street, just that crafty cop who is hidden behind an ad hoarding waiting for the miscreant speeder to go past doing 1/2 mph over the limit.

So if a site allows Google to scrape via a robots.txt then anyone can scrape as long as they follow the rules on the robots.txt file.

Uber, Lyft and cutting corners: The true face of the Sharing Economy

TheresaJayne

I don't get what all the fuss is about, Back when i worked in a Taxi Office when we had a call we would use Microsoft Mappoint to calculate the rate and tell the customer in advance.

There is 2 types of Licensed Cabs,

Hackney Carriage - Can be hailed on the street usually has a light on the top which is lit when available to be hailed.

Licenced Minicab - cannot be hailed but has to be pre-booked (ie phone the cab office/ send an email / use an app to book the cab.) Then the minicab will come and pick you up off the side of the street.

It has always been this way. it is just with the app it is easier for the customer to book a "usually cheaper" minicab without having to call directory enquiries and get a local number. The Hackney Carriage drivers have no real argument except that because the mini cab firms are now using modern technology to offer the customer a cheaper service they are losing out.
