Qualcomm and India’s top telco strike 5G pact, hit 1Gbps in trials

gautam

Well done but.....

....when is the launch?

What hardware/phones/routers are on offer? Will handsets/bands be globally compatible for different markets?

Questions questions.

Rip and replace is such a long Huawei to go, UK telcos plead, citing 'blackouts' and 'billion pound' costs: Are Vodafone and BT playing 'Project Fear'?

gautam

5G ?

Where is 5G? After having bagged the spectrum, networks have shied away from investing in the infrastruture needed. Limited one street per city launches gives them bragging rights, but the HAVE NOT DONE anything costing near enough billions they claim it will cost to rip off 5G.

They are rooting for Govt. handouts and subsidies.

Greedy barstewards, them lot.

What do you call megabucks Microsoft? No really, it's not a joke. El Reg needs you

gautam

Micromuggers.

As per title.

Cisc-o-no! 'We’re being uninvited to bid' on China deals admits CEO as Middle Kingdom snub freaks out investors

gautam

But then......

.......it seems China is the bigger Capitalist at the moment. And US is shrinking into a socialist style domain with too much control freakery and freedom loss. They are going the communist way, surely. Surveillance and spying of own citizens, movements monitored, Social media hacked and spied upon, backdoors everywhere, arrogance of border and immigration staff, racism, gun crime. Looks to me like a downward spiral.

The only thing China buys is commercial Aircrafts ( The biggest US exports for a while) and some agriculture produce, and of course, raw materials for its low cost manufacturing prowess.

WW3 when the Chinese decide to dump all the US treasury bonds . Gold prices will go ballistic and we will have quite a show.

Off somewhere nice on holibobs? Not if you're flying British Airways: IT 'systems issue' smacks UK airports once again

gautam

Competition is good

They are all competing amongst themselves to achieve a level playing field in terms of service, cockups, delays, customer services etc and the lowet common denominator being Ryan Air to aspire to.

Whats not to like?

Except the fares, and their arrogance.

Worlds Favourite? Says who?

gautam

Anyone notice........

..........that the canned statements always mention "SOME" disruption, hacks, letdowns. In this case it is SOME flights form Heathrow. The £ 183 million ICO fine will of course be recovered from customers eventually. We end up paying for big corporate's penny pinching and ineptitude.

But it is always SOME, no matter how big the size of the breach, hack, cockups.

I remember the Talktalk hack (thrice in a year) and they still mentioned SOME customers hacked.

And then the words "we are working hard" to restore/fix/band aid/coverup our incompetencies. The PR dept jumps into overdrive. At least they pay for their keep.

Bar stewards all !

BT flogs off its fleet vehicle maintenance arm to German private equity types Aurelius

gautam

Price rise?

So if they have paid a substantial amount to BT for this deal, they will expect a quick return on investment. One guess about which way the price rise would go . To BT, who willl then pass it on via ISPs.

How convenient.

WItness how many price rises have occured after Liberty media took over Virgin. Customers are only a cash cow number, to be gouged as deemed fit. Upwards pyramid for the shareholders.

gautam

So no more Openreach Engineers then.

They will now easily blame this new entity for cancelled or unkept appointments, since they were arranging spares parts from Germany !

BT has been given another excuse for poor or non performance.

Just like the ISPs blame the BTOR for fault repairs (they dont have a choice), now its gone a step further.

Extreme & ruthless Capitalism, as practised in Britain.

gautam

Very acceptable....

To the blind fanbois. Why would Apple not shaft them, when they are willing and able, having downed their pants and are already bent over ?

After all they started this with their italksnobmachines, where every 8 GB RAM meant about $100 premium ? And sheeple happily pay.

Whats not to like ( for Apple ) ?

They need to loook after the shareholders first.

A good Android smartphone should not be more than £60 to £80 (as has been proved by Moto g et al) and the Chinese producers, due to the current economies of scale.

Just why are we drip fed and rippped off regularly, is what needs explaining, Andrew.

Moto G: Google's KitKat bruiser could knock out, bury Landfill Android

gautam

Irrational article - Andrew

Its a fact that smartphones are the norm now. You could then call all the past feature phones landfill by the same definition. Its still an evolving technology.

If China can sell good smartphones (androids) at around £80 levels profitably, it just lays bare the well known cliche that Apple and Samsung have ripped (and still are) off consumers for all they are worth by slick marketing.

It also proves the dictum that a good smartphone need not cost the earth, as Apple/Samsung would like to make us believe. At 5 times the cost, one is never going to get 5 times the phone ! (except snob value and bragging rights).

If your bosses tell you you're 'in it together', don't ever believe them

Seriously, it seems the whole marketing is based on the Camera specs. WTF? Are they selling a camera with a phone slapped on as an afterthought? Or Vice versa?

Can it make calls?

IF you really need a goood camera, why cant you just buy one and have the rest of the phone as a separate entity?

ANd they will also chareg upwards of £500 for thsi privilege.

Re: N-97

Manu T. The article is about Nokias products and its downfall.

In my opinion, the slide started with the N97, which was touted and advertised as the ultimate in smartphone ( no its a computer in your pocket or some such blrub) and the advertising budget of a third world country's annual GDP.

AND the issue highlighted is the sheer arrogance and disdain displayed by Nokia, when problems arose, in keeping pushing it (assuming consumers were idiots who would keep buying no matter what the faults - another insult, taken for mugs/ granted).

The device may be buried, but not forgotten by us, who bore the brunt of the company's cynical lies, stonewalling and outright deceit, after paying a high price for the product.

As much as you love Symbian (good for a basic phone), theres scores of us , who have been abolsutely riled by Nokia in pretending that SYmbian s60 was the ultimate in smartphone OS, and without remorse.

And the majority of people are NOT INTERESTED in making their own apps. ( you sound just like Nokia management now)

They only want what is offered to "just work" !

And thats the point.

gautam

N-97

I can relate to the N97 failure personally. WIfi was either flaky or non-existent. (changed the handset 3 times). Customer services pants. They only reflashed the firmware 3 times and returned as "fixed" (and waited a week each time). Nokia PC suit software buggy as always. Took ages to recognise phone. OVi store. another nightmare in browsing and having phone recognised for any meaningful download.

Setting up APN a nightmare through connections programe involving many, many steps.

And finally manged to browse through mobile Data plan (no wifi) , well one knows the UI.

One replacement was a refurbished/returned one with a different back case on the back ( Black and white body!).

Thats when got the epiphany, as to how arrogant and out of touch , this company became.

To top it, they brought in Elop whose mission is slash and burn.

Way to go, shareholders and cleanse the board.

Its an abject management lesson in "race to the bottom" and how one man can destroy the most esteemed company in a mtter of few months.

Greed

I would put it down to unbridled greed and lack of training to staff.

Pay peanuts...get monkeys.

And yes, the extended warranty scam whereby they reaped billions over the years, playing on the insecurity of sincere buyers. Never invested a penny of it in extra training and product promotions, hoping punters will just keep coming in, ready to be fleeced.
