Google search index splits with MapReduce

What about NoSQL?

Can't wait for Google to publish more details on BigTable, specially for that "database programming" bit. Could it be they're using actual relational databases as building blocks? Google has long been the poster child of NoSQL due to its use of MapReduce, what if Google moves over to a relational database infrastructure out of - gasp! - performance concerns?

Mozilla man: Firefox 4 will leapfrog JavaScript rivals

Damn You Google!

Firefox and I, we were _happy_. Then along came Chrome and its selection of shiny little convenient plugins for accessing Gmail, Google Docs and Google Bookmarks, taking advantage of my Google whoreness to steal me away.

Now I spend my days with Chrome, but can't dump Firefox altogether because of dev stuff like Live HTTP Headers and WML Browser, for which there is (and in the later case, will ever be) no Extension equivalent.

Oh my heart, torn between user preferences and developer needs!

Beeb deploys ISS as unit of measurement

I won't be confounded by your silly "facts"!

Actually we all got that. We just couldn't resist the simple pleasure of doing some maths.

Since you don't seem adept at doing calculations – "$1.1bn is $1.1bn", how terminaly bland! – it's obvious you're not from here. In fact, you can only be an spy from the Intelligent Toasters (or less likely but still plausible, the Beeb) out to get our names and IP addresses.

Fnord!

How did you calculate it?

So, did all who got to the measure calculate it by hand?

I simply opened a Python shell and typed:

(2 * 10 ** -6) * (1.1 * 10 ** 9) / 350.0

Beat it C boys! :P

Intel eyes up Infineon for purchase

Bye-bye Infineon Mobile Phone Platforms?

I wonder what this could mean for Infineon's line of ARM-based mobile platforms? Their suite of dev tools are one of the best to work with (much better than Qualcomm's for one). Shame if it got out of market just because Intel can't get wireless right.

Don't burn babe don't!

Symbian puts another deck chair on the Titanic

Bittersweet Farewell

While I think its demise would ultimately be a good thing for the mobile industry (one less OS to complicate development and more space for Android to become the de-facto standard), I secretly hope that Symbian will eventually bounce back. It has got so many nice things going: open kernel backed by an independent foundation, Qt as native framework, and now an Web2.0-happy application environment...

How come companies always produce their best ideas when they're already too wrecked to make good on them? Just look at Palm and the webOS.

Google switches on Buzz firehose

A pitty, really

I think it's really a pity that Buzz got all that bad rep early on, and now it's mainly used as a relay for twits and blog updates. I have been using it for a while, and I really appreciate its "microblogging for non-ADHD's" approach. It could certainly borrow a couple ideas from Blogger (tags and inline images come to mind), but overall it's the most productive publishing tool I've used ever since I became a netizen.

Now let the flames begin!
