What's ordered in Vegas, doesn't stay in Vegas? $6.7m of printer ink 'stolen by office worker'

Honest guv!

McCain-Bray reportedly confessed to district officials in December that she made "fraudulent purchases that resulted in personal gain."

But then denies any wrongdoing?

Re: Email alternative

Thumbs down? Stop astroturfing us, MS.

BTW, so far I'm loving eM Client. This is what Outlook SHOULD be.

Re: Email alternative

Maybe I'm easily impressed, but it came with something that's been missing for years: built in holidays.

A little thing, I know, but it's those kinds of things that make my life easier.

Re: Email alternative

WHOA!! It took me all of 15 minutes to download and set up. Email are still importing, but then it's importing several years of email from Gmail.

Interface is quite like.. OH SHIT! For the first time in years my notification works! Just got a very nice soothing musical note and unobtrusive pop-up like Outlook of a calendar appointment!

Anyway, the interface is a lot like Outlook. A lot. Everything is importing from Gmail very quickly. Full Calendar in minutes.

This is AMAZING!

ecofeco Silver badge

You said it all. MS interface design is some kind of Kafka nightmare.

Re: default settings

It is indeed the ugly truth.

Re: Email alternative

Alan. Thanks. That looks very damn interesting. Excellent pricing (free for home use) and quite good looking interface.

I think I'll give it a spin.

Yo we heard you like broken!

We heard you like broken so we put some more broken things on your broken thing! 'Cause we LOVE to pimp your ride!

(some good suggestions by other commentards here. Many I've not heard of and will give a look. Thanks to you all)

365 is one giant step backwards. I never thought I'd live to see the day. Shit for an interface, deleted features, can mostly only be used on-line. WTFF Microsoft?

To be fair, as another poster said, I am also seeing a lot of software move backwards. What the hell is going on?

Re: As a fan of the author William Gibson

With one or two exceptions, ALL of William Gibson's books and stories were about cyber crime and the term is directly associated with his works though it seems he did not coin the term.

A quick search shows:

"Bruce Bethke was actually the first one to put the word in ink with his 1980 short story titled, fittingly enough, “Cyberpunk”. The story was first printed in the November 1983 issue of Amazing Science Fiction Stories"

It also shows:

"Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a future setting that tends to focus on the society ... Primary exponents of the cyberpunk field include William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Bruce Sterling, Bruce Bethke, Pat Cadigan, Rudy Rucker, ..."

Most of them also wrote about cyber crime and social dysfunction and dystopia.

So little pissy britches can just STFU and learn how to use the Internet that they are so keen to be experts of. Then they can just fuck right off. Preferable up their own asshole. They might find the Pokeman monsters there as well.

The Internet is not so old that these concepts have the haze of romanticism around them yet. We are living with the problems right now and it has serious consequences.

Much like the lost art of decorum and discretion, most people have no clue when too much is too much. Our modern social media of rewarding outrageous, stupid, jackass, acts doesn't help.

You know, like "Ouch My Balls!" (ref: Idiocracy)

In other words, you can get away with almost anything if you are clever about it. You don't need a sledge hammer when a gentle shove will do the job.

It's time for a discussion about malvertising

ecofeco Silver badge

Seems simple enough

In general common law, anyone who is negligent in their action leading to harm another is usually held liable in some way to the victim.

Websites that are not vetting their ads for malware (the delivery and presenting of the ad is the "Action"), along with the delivery aggregators and the like, should be held liable as well for the negligence.... by the victim. It's not like there are not tools to do so.

That we have no such protection is criminal in itself.

Competition isn't fostered by monopoly and cartels either.

When a market is imbalanced it absolutely is the gov's job to address and resolve the in balance.

Why are printers so fucked up? Why? There is no reason they should be so hard to set up and run. There is no reason the drivers should be 100s of megs. There is no reason the controls should require a degree in dead ancient languages and aberrant psychology.

It's just a printer, not the fail safe controls for a nuclear power plant!

Re: Meh

I was too busy to finish my post, so here's the rest:

The people who do these types of skimming and embezzling are often also the ones who are the office asshole. You know, either the constantly cranky ones or the smiling backstabbers. The constant pressure to maintain the scam and pretenses and misdirection literally eat them up inside. Or they are mad at the world in general and figure they deserve self administered bonuses.

As for Texas, I've done business there and the amount of business fuckery is so high that the federal budget simply does not allow for the investigation and prosecution of it all. Remember, it's the oil and gas capital of the world. Literally. From trading to engineering to production, Texas is central to the entire worldwide operations in one way or another. With that amount of power and money, how could there not be high fuckery?

The amount of money wasted by business and government in that state is staggering. Yet they never seem to waste it on the average person.

So word to the wise: never let any romance of Texas blind you to the dirty reality. You can make money. You can also get screwed hard just as easy. The guy in this article is a very prevalent type.
