Re: RAID cock-up

the *wrong disk* had been replaced, losing all data.

Had a local computer shop do this to one of my hard drives. Needless to say I was ready burn the place down. Then they had the gall to insist I still pay for the service.

I was ready kill at that point. I came un-fucking-glued and literally read them the riot act in front of other customers.

No, I did not pay.

No, it was totally unrecoverable. They and I both ran the best data recovery available at the time and it was FUBAR'd but good.

Roses are red, you're over the moon, 'cos you work in infosec, and you're retiring soon

Re: You don't just need specialists

Perfectly stated AC. I have a few friend who work in InfoSec, for various organizations protecting very valuable assets, at the highest level, (just below CIO) who have extraordinary skills, experience and knowledge and I hear these complaints from them all the time.

Certs are becoming worthless

While certs are certainly the first thing HR looks for on your CV, and are valuable for that, I've found that many tests are wrong, prices too high and anyone who doesn't have real world experience and relies on the certs training and guides will make huge mistakes.

What I still cannot figure out is why the training and tests have wrong solutions.

If you think a 12yo can fix your computer, you should call one next time you need one. Or go to Geek Squad.

That attitude is part of the problem. Thanks for making my point.

As for MY skills, I was just illustrating this point: the attitude that anything other than high profile project/skills du jour's can be done by anyone and paid accordingly.

It is one of the biggest reasons for project failures. The other of course being manglement.

He's a lying shitweasal

The U.S. tech job market is FUBAR. Low pay, ridiculous skills requirements*, H1-B undercutting citizens, short term contracts that nobody can live on. The list is endless and includes everything in your nightmares like worthless certs and clueless suits who make the pointy haired boss in BOFH look sane.

I get contacted everyday for short term contracts, (3 or fewer months) 1000 miles away for shit pay. Take a wild guess what my response is?

The bottom line: if you can't fill jobs, you aren't fucking paying enough. Live by capitalism, die by capitalism. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to experienced IT employees.

Speaking in Tech's Greg accepts dare to moonlight as an Uber driver

ecofeco Silver badge

Re: "performance driven work sucks"

Yes it does. I'm currently working a somewhat comparable system right now (not a driving gig though) and the pay is erratic as hell.

And even though I'm an independent contractor, the company still dictates my appointment times and payout.

Over the last 6 months, pay per job has dropped, payout is taking longer, job offerings and the ability to claim a job have become unreliable and the dispatch interface has been badly redesigned.

Not just useful to older people, but useful in general.

A recent business report shows that McDonald's attributed some of their increase in profits by simplifying the order taking in their stores. It was as simple as INCREASING THE FONT SIZE of the order system. That was it. It was reported this increased order accuracy by almost 100% resulting is more satisfied customers, faster order fulfillment and less rework for incorrect orders.

To which I thought "Well fucking DUH!"

Oh they tested it. This is the desired result.

Many university UI design courses all geared to making the user experience complicated in order to deliberately capture the users' attention. This is due to the now prevalent advertising revenue software business model. No exaggeration. This is a real thing.

Re: Important safety information:

When I first studied and worked in graphic design, the rule was that 6pt type or anything smaller was never to be used. It only existed as an example of what NOT to use. The only exceptions were the small print in contracts.

Now it is almost the rule that it be used everywhere.

My rule is that if I can cover or mostly obscure a single letter with the tip of my ballpoint pen, the designer (or the person who approved the design) should be killed.
