I've said it before: the perfect American business is to produce and deliver NOTHING and force people to pay for it.
Here is that very example.

But no one would be able to afford them.
And that's one part of the two part problem of the local store.
No one can afford the products and the store owners can't afford the rent per sq m/ft because even now, current real estate prices do not favor small enterprise... and rents NEVER go down.
Full automation has been the capitalist wet dream for 100 years.
I work in, on and near large scale production systems. As big they come. None bigger. Globe spanning. They still employees thousands of people at the sharp end and there is no plan within my lifetime to replace them because... it's really not cost effective.
Sure, there has been some automation, just like there always has, but wholesale replacement is not going to happen any time soon.
So take it from someone who actually works on these systems and not the ivory tower gits. It ain't gonna happen for a long time.
Especially not given the current state of shitware.
A prefect example of the power I.T. professionals wield. Yet for some reason, as a group, we refuse to unite for better conditions.
So smart yet so stupid.
I.T. controls the world. Why are we letting everyone+dog screw us? Ayn Rand was utter bollocks you know.
Wyrdness, in all honesty and sincerity, it sounds like your toilet is leaking. Most likely the flapper valve inside the tank.
I've experienced the same problem many times. I now know that when my water bill goes up mysteriously for 2 months or more, the toilet needs fixing and it is almost always the flapper valve. Sometimes it's the fill valve.
There is only one thing they should teach at the pre-uni level: A+ cert.
That's right. A+ repair cert.
If the kids want more and have shown aptitude, then simple programming.
Or...
Teach the entire Office suite. There's plenty right there for several years worth of classes for most people.
Basically, keep it simple. Daily basic computer use is still very difficult for most people. Why, is another story (*cough*dumbasses programming*cough*) but it literally takes years for most people to just master surfing browsing, email and office software.
So teach that.
That is, if they can find people willing to work for such shite wages.
