Surely if he can't understand the speedometer, then he should decide never to drive and 'ban' himself?

Last I read was that 3 didn't have enough QA to sort out iphone 4 and Desire release. So after kicking a few builds back to HTC, they HAVE finished the 2.1 release, but it's now 'at google'..

And they 'dont know' how long it will be before the release comes out...

http://blog.three.co.uk/2009/12/07/the-htc-hero-with-spotify/

Hmm, though it would appear HTC seem to be hosting a file ?....

to be fair to the 'merkins

when stuck in san diego due to work commitments ( GET THE PROJECT FINISH FOR GODS SAKE).. I was terrified that I might be stuck with the choice of Bud or Bud Light.

But , not only was there a bar where one could get Pilsner Urqel ( amongst 400 different beers, 100 on draft!!!!). There was also an amazing choice of 'locally' and not so local American beers. I'd especially recommend the Karl Strauss selection for one ( or err more ;) ).....

Revealed: Government blows thousands on iPhone apps

davefb

sorry you've lost me..

government spends money on sensible things?

10k is very little for an iphone app, 40k for a multimedia app, well we'd have taken the job , but it's hardly 'lots of money' . How long would the register itself last without any advertising? I'm guessing all the journalists work on it for free and they pay the hosting costs?

'how dare they have iphones and want to look for jobs' , yes, because when made redundant that contract just 'disappears'..

As for smuggies saying 'why not google it' for changing a wheel, good idea, works perfectly in areas of no signal. Having a simple app seems like a good idea..

As mark says , the irony would be that the cost of handling all these ludicrous FOI requests will exceed these costs by far ( though make for nice cheap copy for a multitude of journos)..

( spot the iphone dev who doesn't work on iphone stuff any more because nobody is willing to pay anywhere near the dev costs)

Meryl Streep to tackle Margaret Thatcher

davefb

Theres already been a musical hasn't there?

'visualized' by the great Steve Bell..

'FOoooortress falklands where the cash goes pouring down the drain, where the sound of sheep will stop you sleep' ( all i can vaguely remember)..

Still , meryl streep as thatch , that does sound very 'comic strip'..

Speed cameras slide out of LibCon budget

davefb

err 'speed causes accidents' says mp.

hang on, nobody says this at all. The issue is that the greater the speed means that more energy is in the accident which means greater chance of lives being lost or damage. Its hardly rocket science, more basic physics.

What next, believing the myth about 'seat belts cause deaths because my grandad would have died if he'd been stuck in the car'(etc).

Anyway, surely revenue generation from idiots who can't drive is a sensible tax?

Music festival organisers warn punters about dodgy tickets

davefb
WTF?

glastonbury ID

Err, just checked the official site, it doesnt mention ID at all. Have you a link for that information ?

Your photo is on the ticket, that's the only id you need , surely?

from glasto site.

"ID

You do not need ID to enter the Festival. All tickets will be personalised with the passport photograph submitted by the ticketholder during registration.

Every ticket holder will be required to present their personalised ticket. Checks will be made at the gates. If you are not the person whose face is printed on the ticket you will be denied entry. "

Facebook rejects CEOP 'panic button' demands (again)

davefb
Thumb Down

What an odious man

using the death of a 17yr old to further his quango even though it had nothing to do with child protection issues. What should be happening is that , since they chatted on MSN and MSN has the CEOP button , people should be asking questions of CEOP as to why they didn't do anything, you know, when the girl didnt press the button, or it obviously didn't have the deterrance effect he talks about!

They(CEOP) also keep talking about the 250 complaints for facebook, have we any idea what , if any , were actual issues? How does this 250 compare to other social networking sites?

Labour shock pledge: 16.8-meg broadband for ALL by 2012!

davefb
FAIL

megainflation , pedant strikes back.

Hang on, you can't drag that to 17mbit via 16.7.. If it's 2megabytes, then thats just 16mbit. It also might mean 16777216bits , yes , however that then doesnt then become 16.7mbit rounded to finally round up to 17mbit...

London council loses thousands of kids' details

davefb

'we will disable external storage'

Sounds like one of those helpful IT bods .

IT->'You can't have external storage' ,

worker->' but I have to work at home in order to get some reports done and external storage is they way I can do that' ,

IT->'Not my job to help you do something, just make sure theres nothing bad for the councils PR'.

Of course, thats assuming the worker wasn't just reading these documents for a laugh. Before we had computers and stuff, I suppose paperwork never got stolen because it was just so heavy?

The Pirate Party is the shape of things to come

davefb

cut and pasted to my blog

and i've stuck my name on the banner.. None of that orlanski rubbish.

Nobody is saying stop file sharing. But share things you've created, not things you've copied. Why is that so difficult to accept?

Yes, its stupid that music companies didn't jump to things like napster, but remember, napster was another corporation, is it so difficult to imagine that perhaps the music companies either felt the deal offered wasn't acceptable OR were in the difficult position ( like some companies still are) that a lot of artists might actually not want to be on digital without changes in legal terms?

Still that 75yr copyright thing is a bit wierd and I think they should find better examples that sir cliff losing a few bob.

'Switch to Century Gothic to save the planet'

davefb

Well not printing is the best

but a quick google got this http://www.blogmonkey.co.uk/2009/12/which-font-uses-least-ink.html

with times NR as the base, arial uses more ink , courier new is a lot less ( of the common fonts).

Quite interesting analysis as well.. As it says, m$ or apple could have a nice 'greenwash' by working out a nice looking 'eco' font and spacing as default for their Office packages..

Oh and obviously 'different printer font to save ink' is a patent..

Virgin Media to demo 200Mb/s broadband tomorrow

davefb

korea net

they dont supply to all the population, they have more crowded conurbations and cities where it is possible to supply these services. then ignore the others.

It's the same with all the other countries that supposedly have great net connections ( sweden eg), if you actually talk to users, they have the same problems of 'ahh ,i can get a great connection when I'm in my student accomodation, but at home I can only get 0.5mbit connection' .

Or at least, the survey of the WoW guild I was in ( and lotro) gave those results :) .

I've a vm 10mbit connection, I'd prefer them to reduce the price of that, since there's no need for me to have any faster ( don't steal things ) most of the servers I connect to don't max that out..

Then again, I suppose vm need to be looking at this because they could probably use the bandwidth for high end tv-od system..

Sky to pack pubs with 3D TVs

davefb

but what about the glasses?

thing is, how does this work when they have more than one show on? Whilst you might have just one match on when it's 'the big game' thats only a small proportion of the time, other times the pub will have the racing on and maybe the rugby ( friday night). How's that going to work?

oh right yeah, won't be 3d anyway will it..

100 quid each for specs? I'm sure the pubs are all *really* looking forward to it....

Ubisoft undone by anti-DRM DDoS storm

davefb
Pirate

ubisoft lose nothing thru piracy?

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

apart from the millions spent developing the game of course. Let alone duplication costs, let alone setting this DRM up.I'm sorry, but whenever one of my friends prattles on like this, I ask them about coming round my house and doing some work, I mean, doesn't cost them anything does it?

What a childish attitude, if you can't afford something, you don't steal it.

Ubisoft know damm well this will annoy people, but the scale of piracy is making it utterly impossible to do pc dev without losing millions. Short of mmorpg the pc will die as a games platform as will any console that gets cracked properly. Which is insanely stupid because the pc format is generally a cheaper format to buy games on since you don't have to pay the Sony/m$/nintendo monies.

As for 'its not good enough' err well DONT BUY THE APP, I suppose the similar would be pirating a copy of a song you dont actually like, then bleating to forums 'that cheryl cole, its a horrid song, why doesnt she do decent songs, hardly worth my time pirating her latest single'.

these arent just anti htc

since the os patents are anti-android and are from apple OS ,sorry , taligent and NeXT os. surely this is anti linux since android is linux based? So the comment about SCO is probably more to the point.

Virgin Media admits broadband upgrade 'confusion'

davefb

hmm

this is similar to the experience my mate has just had trying to change his tarrif. He wanted to upgrade BB and downgrade phone, the first CS said 'you must do this online , i cannot'. So he tried, but at no point did it show him a price even though he had to click dialogues saying 'i agree to this'.

It then sent out an email saying 'we need to phone you, we will phone in 48hrs'. Obviously they didn't phone , so he rang back CS. Who now said 'oh yes, i can fix that for you'..

The poor CS got a long 'dialogue' about 'well why did the other person say this was impossible then?'..

NotW reporter accused of hacking over 100 mobiles

It states they know, because the put an FOI request in about the investigation. Obviously they probably knew anyway, but they probably wanted to show that the police also know.

Airport scanner staff object to vetting

davefb

its worth it..

for the makers of the scanners.

the biggest joke is that they've backtracked from saying this would have caught the latest bomber. It's now '50% chance we would have' .

Patting down would have worked as well , if not better. Oh and listening to the guys father, that might have helped. Maybe revoking his visa, since he'd been reported as a terrorist,, stuff like that..

Instead we get 'sexoscanners'. Incredibly the staff think it's insulting that we assume they're gunna enjoy looking at the pics, but it's perfectly okay to assume we're all a set of terrorist maniacs.

And yeah, err how come these people aren't already vetted, or is it 'yet-another-vetting-system' ?

Discrimination warning over airport body scanners

davefb

yeah yeah , but

Who cares about the civil liberties... What about the statements that theres only a 50 to 60% chance all that expensive new equipment would have actually caught this bloke, let alone the plans that come along after these new scanners are used. So basically, all this pointless expense will make us no safer, it's just the makers of the kit that prattle on about 'how great they are'. Why not just make us all go through naked, it'd be cheaper.

And yeah, I do recall the time when vaguely irish people were targeted in simplistic terms, it made reasonable people extremely angry ( rightfully) and just played right into the hands of the terrorists by creating a legitimate 'target'.

New mega offshore windfarms could supply 2% of UK energy

davefb

@angus

err , the fins liked wind 'so much' that after a horrific cold spell that froze hydro and there was no wind, they decided to revoke laws and build nuclear.

The problems are that nobody has build the things for so long that the engineers are retired. Or at least that's some of the potential excuses as to why the new plant is sooo late!

Sony confirms 3D TV channel plans

davefb

but..

I don't understand 3d tv , doesn't this mean that either you buy lots and lots of glasses, or the screen will look mad to people who don't have them? How do 3d glasses work, if you wear glasses?

It really does seem like desperation about trying to sell more hardware when we haven't got anywhere near decent HD tv yet.

Freeview HD - your questions answered

davefb

It is a shame though

that my loverly analog signal I used to get from Winter Hill , is now a 'not that great' digital one. I mean, it's okay for some things, but anything with 'active' screens shows up the compression so easily I'm amazed that people still talk about the 'better screen quality'. Especially since we tend to have better quality screens that show these artifacts up more. Oh hum, I suppose who cares that we have artifacts when we can have 20 channels that nobody watches in the same 'space' :( .

Interesting comments about 'no to DAB+ , but yes to DVB-t2' . Couldn't they also have the same idea and start DAB+ transmissions as well , in the same way we're going to be having DVB and DVB-t2 ?

Spain 'goes 50% wind powered' - in the small hours

davefb

just read the pro wind version on the gruaniad

it claims at the peak the power was 11gw . but interestingly this is still just 60% of peak load ( 18gw).. So what conditions are going to be needed for this peak load then?

Loud sex a human right, says loud sex woman

davefb

oh dear

might sound funny, but my dad and step mum had this problem as well with a neighbour being loud .....

they moved eventually, obviously it wasn't just the loud 'banging' but having to listen to it during breakfast with my grandma round was apparently somewhat embarrassing.

perhaps she might like to consider that 'not having to listen to her' is also a human right ?

Gwen Stefani in Band Hero avatar argument

davefb

not that similar (probably)

having worked on some soccer games, what can happen is that most players will have a deal with the organisers say for example the premier league. but more 'famous' individual players will have their own deals this is often why big name players either appear as 'number 7' in fifa it is also why some players have very long contract arguments when signing for new clubs.

Ahh, though having googled' that, I'm stunned that EA have fallen foul of this. Though they don't say in the lawsuit anything about his actual face features, are they just saying that the height and weight are enough to be his 'likeness' ?

I suspect the deal with band-hero' is closer to the medical condition of 'financial myopathy' where the person signing the deal is unable to actually read it because they cannot see past the $$$$$$$$$$. Not probably helped by the number of intermediarys trying to explain the concept.

Sony pulls plug on cabled power

davefb

I've a fantastic eco idea!

save 25% , by plugging a cable in!

This current fad for cable-less tech does seem perculiar , after all wires *work*, don't they ? Okay so maybe a lot of interconnects could go via wireless to cut down on all those myriad of hdmi cables we'll all end up with, but the power cable , is it really that bad ?

With the extended range, does that drop power even more ? I'm guessing the 22inch device was because the tech looks even worse when applied to larger tv's with larger power requirements ?

Nokia carves out Qt future

davefb

developing on nokia suck's

Well one reason is that they keep changing things. So they're changing how symbian works,, again.. *yay*! Ahh, but it's yet-another-new-name , so maybe people won't notice ? But developers will still have to consider targeting the slightly less new phones so will have to work with all the other variants still.. gee ..

As for the nokia j2me being 'great'.. 'hmm' maybe only insofar as comparing with most other phone companies implementations perhaps. But to be honest I prefered the later sony-erricsons.

Oh hum, who cares, we're all making jesus-phone games/apps now..
