Who cares what Apple's about to announce? It owes us a macOS x86 virtual appliance for non-Mac computers

Nokia said to be considering sale or merger as profits tank

Deej

Apart from the fact that it was formed by ex-Nokia execs. I imagine the long-term plan was to merge it into Nokia at some point in the future, but I guess that's looking a bit less likely now....!

Re: "experiencing intermittent service"

My Three HomeFi service went offline at 0:45 (ish) this morning and was still down when I went to work at 8:30 this morning.

Since 9:15 I've been able to connect to it by VPN so it looks like it's up, but there is still no signal on my iPad where I work.

Can only assume they're either bringing it up in a phased way or by APN or something like that?

The future of radio may well be digital, but it won't survive on DAB

Deej

I'd be really intrigued to know some demographics of the people who are commenting on this article; they all appear to be audiophiles with old radios that you could take to the South Pole for 37 years without needing replacement.

To add a very small bit of balance, I have DAB in my car and one bedroom receiver, and in these environments where I'm either concentrating on the road or trying not to wake up, they're fine; I've not felt the need to switch to FM on either of them for as long as I can remember.

In between refusing to get up and driving places, I listen to music on my Sonos speakers, where I stream radio (mainly from California: KOST 103.5 is pretty good for feel-good chart music), play digital audio files or Amazon 'Stations' depending on what mood I'm in.

So, all my music listening is "digital" in this sense, but not all of it is broadcast radio.

Nokia 8: As pure as the driven Android - it's a classy return

Deej

Nokia 6 - does it work ok?

I have a Nokia 6 too, but sometimes the screen and fingerprint sensor just don't respond properly. It's driving me crazy.

I've been through Nokia support who didn't really help very much, and I went back to Carphone Warehouse who were frankly no help at all.

I'm thinking of getting a new digitiser and trying to fix it myself, but my question is whether - as a Nokia 6 user - this affects you too or whether I just have a defective model..

'Open sesame'... Subaru key fobs vulnerable, says engineer

Deej

Re: This won't be addressed

Er.. I'm not sure Subaru has been "offloaded". Sure, they've done a couple of joint ventures with Toyota (like the BRZ/GT86), but they're still very much independent and a brand in their own right.

However, you are right that they could well use different ECUs and transmitters, just as the technology has naturally evolved over time.

Stop

They know their time is up

Over the last year, I've been transferring my domains away as they come up for renewal (to Gandi, FYI)

Recently, the option to generate an auth code for the transfer has been greyed out on their customer portal, meaning I have had to raise a support ticket for each domain.

I'd venture that they're trying to stop people from moving away, but as far as I'm concerned it's not working very well!

Around 1.4 million people have sub-10Mbps speeds - Ofcom

Deej

Re: I am one of the 1.4m

Haha! I wouldn't be so foolish as to go with BT for my service; unfortunately everything gets back to Openreach in the end, and they're the ones who refuse to do anything.

Sad times.

Deej

I am one of the 1.4m

I get 4mpbs, and loads of packet loss which I think is due to the distance from the exchange. My line, an Exchange-Only line (rather than one that goes to the green cabs on the roadside), cannot be enabled for fibre. I've argued with BT to do something about it, seeing as I can actually *see* a green cab from my lounge window, but no "there's nothing they can do, sir."

Harumph.

Is Apple's software getting worse or what?

Deej

Re: Well...

See, I know that iTunes attracks an awful lot of criticism, but I really don't see what's so blummin' awful about it..

It organises my library, allows me to sync with various devices, buy new stuff from its store and, you know, plays stuff? What are people expecting it to do?

Deej

Well...

... I for one am perfectly happy with my Apple devices. I'm not an Apple fanboy, and (these days) am not into messing around with Linux Kernels and so on. I'm happy with how it works, and am able to adapt to the changes in iTunes and what-not.

Ultimately, I suppose it depends what you use the devices for. For my needs, the software and hardware is just fine :)

Beleaguered 123-reg customers spot price hike

Deej

I am in the process of migrating all my domains away from 123-reg to Gandi.

To be fair to 123-reg, they don't charge to transfer away, but even before the price hike they were (in my opinion) very expensive. I've been meaning to transfer for ages but laziness got in the way; however the problems they have had this year had given me the final incentive to get my backside in gear :)

123-Reg has another PITSTOP

Deej

I know that the domain registration side of 123-reg has yet to be affected, but I'm in the process of moving all my domains away from them just to be on the safe side.

It doesn't make very good reading really.

MONSTROUS iPhone sales are CANNIBALIZING iPads, gabbles Apple CEO

Deej

Maybe iPads just have a longer life?

I have an iPad "3" - I use it every day, I take it with me to work, and play games on it in the evening occasionally.

It still works just fine - sure, it struggles with the frame rate on some of the newer games, but most of the time it does exactly fine - checking my email, updating my calendar, browsing Facebook etc.

Will I replace it? Yes of course. With an iPad? Absolutely. But not yet - I see no reason to upgrade unless the software stops supporting it or it dies a horrible death.

The relentless push for updated models just doesn't apply to me, and I wonder how many other people feel the same way? Perhaps there will be a surge in iPad sales when they all *need* replacing, and then drop back again?

The coming of DAB+: Stereo eluded the radio star

Deej

Re: Con trick

I can't tell if you're joking about the consequence of compression on Satellite being that most transmissions ALL sound as rough and as hideous as each other, but I suspect it's just 'easier' to take the post-Optimod audio and spit it out to AM, FM, DAB, Satellite etc. Just lazy I reckon.

Deej

Re: DAB killed the radio star

Yes agreed regarding the majority of units sold being of the 'portable' type - it's an absolutely fair point :)

Deej

DAB killed the radio star

As a long-term fan of radio, and as somebody who set up a Community Radio station and took part in an temporary FM broadcast (RSL), I've been left constantly disappointed by DAB.

When DAB launched, the promise was of superior sound, masses of choice and so on. And certainly, when DAB launched, there was - Life, Chill, Core - numerous great sounding stations which slowly but surely ceased to be, leaving behind the same stuff but with a different name - Heart and Capital really; even Real Radio has gone now.

Those that remained slowly got worse to listen to with lower bitrates and a switch to mono (mono? REALLY?). The nail in the coffin for me as a listener was when Absolute Radio switched to mono recently.

As a potential broadcaster, I was left constantly frustrated about the high cost to entry on DAB - thousands and thousands of pounds (unfortunately I'm not allowed to say how much because of NDAs I've had to sign), but just unnecessarily high, which effectively locks out potential new - potentially innovative - broadcasters from the technology and unable to reach an audience desperate for something different.

And now a new MUX launches, probably with the same barriers to entry, and still everything in sodding mono! It's too little too late - I listen online now using Sonos and Pure Flow radios, and I suspect that more and more people will listen this way as well; particularly as online cars become more commonplace and TuneIn app becomes more prevalent. You can even listen in stereo - imagine that!

So, *so* disappointing.

Apple boots Windows 7 out of Boot Camp

Deej

I didn't think Boot Camp was really that widely used?

As per the title - I didn't think Boot Camp was that widely used; not when you have the likes of Parallels and VMware so you can run a different OS in a VM.

Can't say I've used Boot Camp in a very long time (but was using my Windows 10 VM only yesterday)..

Thought Apple was kidding about diversity? Here's 50 MEEELLION reasons you're wrong

Deej

Anything like this is good

I think that any steps to create a diverse and equal workforce should be applauded; yes, you could say that money isn't the answer, or telling people about it (like the BBC - "we're officially banning all-male panels on comedy shows") leads to tokenism, but you have to start somewhere before it becomes the norm. Any effort to move towards making diversity and equality the norm is a Good Thing in my opinion :)

Middle finger

Much as I appreciate that Linus is not known for his diplomacy or tact, it doesn't mean that El Reg has to plaster the picture of him giving the middle finger all over the website. Where I work that makes the whole of The Register NSFW and there could be more organisations like mine, and it becomes more prominent because of the site redesign too.

Just a polite request to consider where your audience accesses your site, that's all.

Tesco preps for Big Data Engine dump: Laters, Clubcard dev

Deej

The one thing that Tesco forgot a long time ago was customer service. I've been into Tesco many times when the staff at the checkouts have been chatting to each other without even acknowledging me, and then just holding out their hand for payment. Based on this, I refuse to shop in Tesco any more - I can't be the only one that is like this. Sainsburys' terminals even says "Greet Customer" before products are put through - a cheery 'hello' can make all the difference in my opinion.

Ex-Nokia team unveil Jolla smartphone with added Sailfish OS

Deej

Re: Don't think it's a good idea

Surely even the doomsayers have to applaud the efforts and the spirit that has gone into this handset?

These guys were laid off from Nokia; told they were surplus to requirements. They could have all gone home, played on their Xbox and moped around the house because they couldn't find another job (making a wild assumption there!), but they didn't - they got together and tried to do something different. Surely that in itself is worthy of some encouragement?

Just because *you* don't think it will work, doesn't mean that others do. I'm looking forward to reading a review, and highly likely to buy a handset when it reaches our shores.

YouView launches with pricey premium DVR

"The trouble is, of course, a lot of folk own DVRs already. No problem, says the ebullient Sir Alan, this is the box their going to replace their DVRs with"

*they're

The device feels as if it's a decade too late - not in terms of functionality but because it's yet another add-on box. At the moment, with the integration of Freeview / Freesat / iPlayer into Smart TVs, isn't the general trend to reduce the number of devices on the shelf below the telly?

Integrate it into a telly - yes, great. Or make it into a USB dongle so it can plug in to a PC / Mac or an existing telly that has a USB slot (assuming that kind of capability exists).

HP open sources WebOS TouchPad tablet GUI

Deej

I stopped using my Touchpad just two weeks ago - I just got fed up of the pauses in mail app that caused me to delete multiple emails instead of one etc.

Shame really, as I really wanted WebOS and the TouchPad to be a market leader rather than a has been :(

I tried CyanogenMod 7 and 9 on it, and while it seemed to run OK there were still bugs that I experienced, mainly around wifi.

Again shame, as this could have given the tablet a new lease of life.

Training? Just more staff would help

In an Apple store there are *lots* of staff; having to wait for help is not particularly common.

In an Orange store, you can wait for *DAYS* before being served. If you can't get the attention of a member of staff, no amount of training is ever going to help.
