FAVI smacks your dumb TV with £30 Android SmartStick

JDX Gold badge

Re: HDMI HiFi

Why would the kind of person who has a modern separates HiFi, which is rather expensive, be spending £30 to add smartness to a crap old TV? This product is surely aimed at a much more typical audience who simply have a TV stuck in the corner and a bog-standard wireless router?

Intel bets the farm on touch-enabled 'convertible and detachable' Ultrabooks

Re: I wouldn't mind a nice 14" Intel tablet

Is there any reason you want such a high resolution on such a small display other than because you're jealous of Apple?

JDX Gold badge

Re: Winning the battle...

Maybe but an extra 5W doesn't sound like too much in a tablet which has much more battery capacity than a phone, and where the screen is even more the dominant power drain.

I'm not convinced by these convertibles, but it seems to me hating Intel is just what one subset of geeks like to do, just as others hate MS - it doesn't matter how much they improve or even transform areas of historical weakness, haters will still hate. MS write insecure software, Java is slow because it's interpreted, yada yada.

Security bods rip off Microsoft's 'sticking plaster' IE bug fix

A question to hackers or security people

I've always wondered when MS say "this vulnerability could allow an attacker to take full control of your computer" , what does that actually mean? In my head I see them using a vulnerability to mysteriously launch an RDP session to your PC or something but that sounds unlikely... anyone know first hand what it actually 'looks like' from the hacker's side?

Why won't you be able to download 4k content? If the bitrate is too much for streaming, we'll see providers reverting to download copies as a sales method.

Re: @Cyborg If you've got a TV big enough for this to make any difference,

What compression is used on BR video... it's certainly possible to get a lot more video on a DVD than the DVD standard codec allows using modern codecs so perhaps the same is true here too? Or maybe BR is already using a near-optimal codec?

when a computer is capable of doing the job

What makes you think people aren't watching Netflix on TV? Modern TVs have it built in and the rest of us just use the PS3/XBox/Wii or plug a laptop into the TV. Meaning you have a computer AND a TV.

Re: Winking

Actually now I think more isn't winking/blinking already used for special disabled interfaces, along the same lines as Prof. Hawking?

Voice control is already built into Windows (7 anyway) for simple commands.

JDX Gold badge

It says one system detects finger motions rather than eyes so presumably you'll have to be careful when you swear at the PC in case it turns itself off.

JDX Gold badge

Re: pointless

I was thinking winking too. I'm sure it's possible but maybe it's not very user-friendly... try deliberately winking every time you click the mouse for a bit and see what you think. Additionally, some people can't wink!

Because Stark isn't an expert when it comes to physics, engineering, chemistry and computer-science? Nothing like choosing the answer you want to come up with before you start... simply label Stark as 'genius' but list every manifestation of Wayne's genius as a separate thing to make the list look longer.

Um, this has happened several times.

Not everyone wants the hassle, or wants to drain the batteries on 2 devices to use one... a tablet can store much bigger batteries.

Re: Resolution

Probably because you're a cheapskate... or because Apple hasn't made screen resolution a key selling point on laptops the same way they did on phones and tablets.

Ironically phones don't need the resolutions now being used, while laptops do.

A feature to warn users their searches might trigger censorship or other bad stuff is good. A feature which explicitly helps users re-word their searches in a special language to avoid detection is definitely outside Google's remit in my opinion.

Re: Android's BEEN there DONE... Ooops DOING that!!

Tablets existed before iPad and touch-phones before iPhone. Apple's genius is in somehow making the world want something that they had previously decided they didn't.

JDX Gold badge

Who knows

People have tried wearable PCs before and failed. A bit like how tablet computers had been written off as crap pre-iPad. Maybe just maybe... Apple could make a watch-PC mass-market-desirable and then everyone else can make better versions which don't sell.

I dunno, it's typically frustrated teenagers who provide the biggest power supply and Apple is not the OS of choice for nerdy friendless teens.

Plus, put Linux on a watch and the watch itseklf would be a source of arousal for said teens. And Reg readers... if the latter isn't a subset of the former.

So Netflix are unpopular because people bought a service without checking what it provided? If it's a shoddy service then don't buy it and complain, don't buy it.

JDX Gold badge

What did Netflix do wrong?

It's a slick service and I found their service helpful (see #9 http://www.buzzfeed.com/expresident/british-people-problems). Wonder what they did to piss people off... maybe low broadband speeds spoiled the experience?

Little spider makes big-spider-puppet CLONE of itself out of dirt

JDX Gold badge

Re: So, presumably

The textbook example of this happening in short time scale is that of moths in England over the historical period known as the Industrial Revolution. Moths (nocturnal, so inactive during daylight) would rest against the bark of trees, appropriately camouflaged to the species of tree they preferred. Soot from the burning of coal ('dark satanic mills') darkened the appearance of trees in many areas, and this placed a strong 'selection pressure' on generations of moths- favouring those that exhibited a mutation that made them darker. Pale moths would be readily seen by birds and promptly eaten.

This happened in decades, if not years. Moths, like spiders, have many, many offspring.

Sorry but you simply don't understand evolution. The much-vaunted moths example isn't evolution. It is simply a case where there were already two versions of the same organism, and changed circumstances suddenly made one of them at a severe disadvantage. That took months because both types already existed. That is natural selection, not evolution. An emergent new behaviour - from a regular spider to one which makes a fake spider - is a totally different proposition. This takes a LOT of time.

I was nowhere suggesting evolution doesn't occur by the way. Merely that some examples really make it seem that the long time scales are actually not that long at all when it is randomly driven.

JDX Gold badge

@Dave 126

Sorry Dave I've no idea what point you tried to make. I merely commented that atheists feel happy using 'gross' stuff from nature as evidence against a God, while lambasting anyone who suggests the 'pretty' stuff from nature is evidence for a God.

The downvotes suggest a preponderance of indoctrinated atheists who have learned atheism in exactly the same way many learn their religion... taking someone else's word for it rather than making up their own mind. I'm sure they'll take this post also as being pro-sky-fairy (a term which itself demonstrates an emotive rather than intellectual position on the subject) and downvote in the same way.

JDX Gold badge

Re: ummm

" The spider doesn't need to know that what it is building looks like a spider. All it needs to know is that what it is building scares off predators. "

So millions of years of evolution give the same result as the spider just standing in the web in the first place? That's certainly not an Intelligent Design :)

I wondered if the idea is it does not scare predators, but tricks them into eating the fake.

Re: Brilliant

Indeed

I think that might be stretching the random mutations / natural selection mechanisms a bit too far. Suddenly a billion years doesn't quite seem like enough time!
