Google's JavaScript assassin: Web languages are harder than VMs

JDX Gold badge

Of Course!

The best thing to replace JS, a browser-specific language without decent dev tools, is not an existing language used across desktop & server platforms with a mature set of tools and proven track record, but ANOTHER new language. Because we don't have enough of those already.

NRA: Video games kill people, not guns. And here's our video game

JDX Gold badge

but the only place where regular mass shootings occur...

If we're focusing specifically on school shootings, I don't think either guns or games can be blamed because other countries have high gun ownership. It's something about the US' collective psyche.

JDX Gold badge

>>I been gaming for years, including the hyper violent "Worms" series of games, can't recall ever going out and killing anybody though

Your argument is like a nonagenarian smoker claiming that because they haven't developed cancer, smoking doesn't kill.

JDX Gold badge

They are against games where you shoot PEOPLE. A game where you practice shooting paper targets at a simulated gun range has nothing to do with that.

Re: ...Really? This is news?

I guess you're an expert performing thousands of simultaneous queries on a multi-PB database then? It's called graph-search for a reason, the connectedness of a graph is in direct relationship to how hard it is to analyse.

JDX Gold badge

I think we're only scratching the surface what their data could be used for, the problem is it's so much data it's hard to process.

I bet you could in theory develop intelligence agents which identify criminal/terrorist groups based on the interactions and interconnections between people for instance.

Re: Meh

How many are actual friends... all of them. Or at least people I know.

Why do you want to rob your friends houses?

The moron is the person who:

a)calls people morons for not making their own opinions

b)tries to force his own opinion on others

c)thinks his opinions are not the result of all the opinions he was exposed to

Re: Firstly...

If you're not going to use FB properly then I agree, why have an account? Just so you can complain about it?

JDX Gold badge

Re: How do people find time for all the admin?

Pretty sure stopping your tags showing up is trivial... people can tag you but you have to confirm it.

JDX Gold badge

Re: I have doubts about its usefulness to me

Since presumably users tell FB how valuable data is TO THEM PERSONALLY, it depends on the data you give it.

JDX Gold badge
Mushroom

Boring

Not the news, just the inevitable "it's just spyware" comments. FB in particular has the most amazing collection of data available which could be used for absolutely astonishing projects, but you supposed techy experts can't see past them sticking your face next to an advert, and classifying this as some ultra-heinous near-criminal offence.

Amazon rainforest starts making phone calls

It might be suggested the people who developed the system know a bit about logging.

JDX Gold badge

Whoever said to put one on every tree... if someone is logging thousands of trees you could put one every square mile and it would be enough.

Microsoft ends Mac users' Windows Phone 8 misery

Re: Question

>>It's actually quite difficult to imagine that anyone would own a Mac and a Windows Moble Phone...

Not really, it's pretty easy to imagine. Hard to believe maybe is what you meant.

Although I own a Mac and a Windows phone. And an iPad and a Windows desktop with Cygwin installed. And a Kindle.

I hope that didn't stretch your imagination too far.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Surprising choice

I don't believe the majority of Mac owners are fanbois any more than Windows users are. Although it's fair to assume Mac owners are the demographic who favour iPhone the most.

Amazon-bashed HMV calls in administrators, seeks buyer

Re: Problem with Online Ordering (Amazon)

What exactly was the point of that story other than to confess your idiocy? Next you'll be boycotting Tesco because someone's kid put stuff in your trolley and you didn't notice.

JDX Gold badge

They STOLE my money for sure - all I got in return was a box with a shiny silver disc in it.

Oh wait....

Maybe? Or just more £1 shops?

Re: Whatever it is, itl rape your privacy that little bit more

You're right, a social networking site would work much better if the site and other users couldn't see any information about you at all. It's nearly as bad as the time BT put my home phone number in their phone book... how is that not illegal?!

Re: Lol.

Crap troll. When Linux is used people are building on a legacy. When NT is used it's "can't be bothered to write a new OS".

People who don't know the first thing about programming probably shouldn't weigh in on subjects they are embarrassingly ignorant of, especially when they are fans of a 25-year-old OS.

JDX Gold badge

Demonstrates that Windows NT code still lurks under the surface of Windows Phone 8

That's the whole POINT of W8 that it is built on a proper PC kernel for the first time, not a crippled CE/mobile OS like WP 7.5.

JDX Gold badge

Re: True innovation

Unlike Android of course, built on an OS that pre-dates Windows NT.

Siri, will Chrome's new speech features kill you?

JDX Gold badge

Re: Strange

I find it silly but my wife uses siri all the time to add reminders and it works remarkably well, for that use case I'm grudgingly forced to realise it is quicker to do it that way. Though it's the natural language processing which is really the time-saver.

Sure why not? iOS devices get jailbroken without fail, as do Android devices (those which try to stop you anyway)

I have a SD account (I assume, I own a WP7.5 phone) but never used it... DB does exactly what I need in a no-hassle way so I am struggling to see how any product will improve on that.

I wonder if I can set SD and DB up to monitor the same folder without them interfering?

The 10 best … Windows Server 2012 features

JDX Gold badge

Does 2012 allow you to jump to desktop like W8 does, or is the choice Metro or nothing (nothing as in cmd-line not nothing as in 'no choice')?

JDX Gold badge

The article makes it clear the 2012 is pretty awesome and mentions catching up or sometimes surpassing the competition a few times... but the competition is (presumably) Linux which is free. Now I know that software/license costs can dwindle to insignificance compared to hardware and human costs but even so, you'd want to be cost-effective.

AS a non-server guy powershell sounds a killer feature but doesn't nix match that for example?

JDX Gold badge

I'm a bit confused how this is a tablet rather than simply a touchscreen all-in-1 PC.

It's good that W8 allows such high resolutions, and flexibility on spec at all really.

But isn't this basically like the old MS Surface table thing?
