Google donates 15,000 Raspberry Pis to UK schools

Re: Google Doing Good Things

It's no different to MS gifting or giving crazy discounts on their software. MS do it to cynically hook people on MS, but Google are helping to spur education?

It is simply a different take on the same idea - 'hearts & minds' might be the right term.

Microsoft teases possible Jan. 29 launch for Office 2013

Re: Oh! My! God!

And let LibreOffice is still being actively developed. Are you admitting it's at least 6 years behind MS?

JDX Gold badge

Re: No one cares

I hardly count your tiny office as "everyone" but it's nice of you to make these sweeping generalisations on behalf of the 95% of businesses which aren't running Linux.

Although I would suggest that realistically, even Office fans are not going to get excited. Maybe mildly interested... seriously MS a hyped product launch for a business suite?

Re: The only tablet

Pauper.

JDX Gold badge

Otherwise the specs for the 9.7-inch tablet and its Retina screen remain the same

I wouldn't be so sure. They already released iPad4 without really telling anyone which practically doubled the performance. So this might indicate another refresh, which seems to be the plan rather than announcing new versions every time.

It's a lot of cash, but are there many 128Gb tablets out there?

I don't want to turn off my brain, ever

You seem to be providing a pretty decent impression that it's already switched off.

JDX Gold badge

Greg... having watched every episode of ST, TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise as well as every single ST film made, and having read the books of all the original ST stories to boot, I still think the new film is good and authentic - clever even.

Perhaps your brain simply can't understand it is possible for two people to have the same facts at their disposal and come to different conclusions?

JDX Gold badge

They had ewoks in ST? I would say SW is far more serious SF than ST.

JDX Gold badge

It wasn't called ST 9. You're idealising ST to a ridiculous level, the original has none of those things you talk about. You're seriously trying to defend a show which had William Shatner as the lead as being serious, well-written TV?

JDX Gold badge

Because the old Star Trek films were deep cinematic masterpieces? Come on, I love ST but it's just trashy sci-fi.

Or, you have it completely (and presumably deliberately) backwards. Are you denying 99% of the web's content is pointless nonsense (regardless of whether you put the Pope inside or outside)?

And it's not a causal link, but a statistical correlation... the difference is not massive whereas your statement suggest no very educated people are religious which is patently untrue.

Microsoft's Intel-powered Surface Pro to launch in February

Re: Well, at that price

Yes and you can get a desktop for the price of an iPad too. I could buy a kick-ass motorbike for the price of a budget family car, but they're different things.

Re: Too fookin' heavy

Sorry Charlie but as someone who works with 3D rendering, the modern Intel graphics chips are a world apart from the ones a few years ago. Full DX10/11 support, etc. It won't be great compared to a discrete fat GPU but then neither is any other option. Integrated graphics - Intel/iPad/etc - are surprisingly capable these days.

Re: SSDs Save The Day

It's just a PC without a keyboard... so what's the problem?

JDX Gold badge

Re: How can Microsoft get this stuff so wrong

>>But then why bother with an Intel processor?

Well my main PC has 4Gb. I run Visual Studio, Word, Excel, Paint.net, a bunch of games, etc. MOST software doesn't need more than 4Gb, other than games and art tools. You could even run Photoshop or 3DS-Max on 4Gb (for limited complexity projects).

JDX Gold badge

"the perfect complement to the Surface Windows RT."

Does that mean I'm supposed to have both?

I actually kind of want one, though damned if I know exactly why.

JDX Gold badge

Re: How can Microsoft get this stuff so wrong

4Gb is fine. Mainstream desktops are still shipping with 4GB as standard, W8 is supposedly more efficient, the SSD will make swapping WAAAY faster, and ultimately the kind of apps which need 8GB are not the kind of thing you should be running on a tablet.

Kind of with you on the SSD except that for regular users, 64 probably is fine... meaning non techy types. With you on the keyboard.

Note though that this is really a reference device, anyone can make their own competing device since all this is is an ultra-slim touch PC. You'll have to wait for someone to make a beefier version.

Google's Native Client browser tech now works on ARM

JDX Gold badge

Re: Terrible

It's more cross-platform. If you write a normal browser plugin it effectively is just regular .dll/.exe (or other OS equivalent) which is loaded by the browser. So you have to compile separately one version for Windows, one for OSX, one (at least) for Linux, etc.

@Phil

>>Pencil and paper? It's worked at the best universities for the last 800+ years#

I do love it when people post this stupid argument, thinking it proves a point. Before pencil and paper, slate and chalk worked just fine too.

The reason we used pen[cil] and paper for so long is ONLY because it was the economical, easy approach. NOT because it was the best. Phil has also missed the point that the top universities no longer use pencil and paper. Or even pen and paper... when did anyone last use pencils... other than a few subjects like maths, computers are the norm for writing essays and projects.

Time Warner Cable to Netflix: We want your 3D films, not your network

JDX Gold badge

Re: probably won't notice

They seem to be adding lots of stuff all the time, many things are annoying absent here but we've not run out of things to watch and have discovered new shows through it. Also loads of older shows I would never pay to own, but are nice to watch once... in fact a way to watch 4OD content without adverts and at decent quality is possibly worth the fee.

The US content is way ahead but since Netflix has established dominance and online streaming is clearly the future, I'm confident it will eventually end up with just about everything.

Foolish to think they would suddenly change their entire pricing model to mirror Apple's, but I'd forgotten how much full versions cost so buying ahead in case I need it seemed sensible... , maybe I'll dual-boot it on my Mac as my main PC probably needs replacing soonish and can live with W7 until then.
