Fancy watching 'Bake Off' together with mates and alone at the same time? The BBC's built a tool to do that

JDX Gold badge

Wonder why Netflix doesn't have this

As a trendy tech company I am a little surprised Netflix hasn't added 'social' functionality so you can have 'friends' on their system - recommend shows to each other, see your mates' reviews and comments, etc. Adding communal viewing would then be a natural evolution. Integrating their own chat, or Twitter, even VOIP (like multiplayer gaming but for TV).

I am not saying I WANT these features because I fear it would be a mess of "Jeff just watched Tiger King" but it does seem like something a lot of younger users would use!

Re: "together even when they are physically apart"

Don't worry, nobody wants to watch with you.

You mention YouTube... YT and FB both allow scheduled viewings. FB has "watch party" so you can have a online chat built in as you watch together (I haven't used it myself but I think that's the idea).

In the modern world, people view being together remotely as still being together. Video-chat probably makes a huge difference compared to just being on the phone.

Re: By requiring Authenticated login for online viewing ...

Well yeah lots of people watch sport together of course. Lots of people (used to) get together for shows like Bake Off, Masterchef, as a social event. Probably others. When we relied on live TV this was actually much easier so this is recapturing something that's lost through on-demand services.

I am sure it's a bit of a niche thing, but it seems a nice enough feature especially during lockdown.

Re: Didn't Jobs actually say...

Definitely eye-catching and though these days we say Apple charge extra for superficiality, it's machines like this which make the idea of a PC in the living room not hidden in a study/attic attractive.

Now that role has been filled with laptops, and even regular desktops tend to come in quite small cases. It's easy to forget just HOW big and ugly those beige boxes were.

Re: JDX asked:

Speed and bandwidth are different.

My question said 4G is fast enough, are there other advantages? Your answer said yes: more people can GET high-speed SIMULTANEOUSLY. That is clearly a big deal in crowded areas so makes sense.

JDX Gold badge

What does 5G on a phone let you do?

(Other than give you a Chinese virus of course, ba-dum.)

I can see ultra-fast wireless networking is great in many cases but given 4G is often already faster than home internet, what is the use-case especially on a small screen where, for instance, 4k video is not a huge gain?

Is there more to it than just pure speed?

Re: @ the AC, re: wireless headphones.

As someone who was really aghast at losing 3.5mm, I bought the 1+6 deliberately as their last model to have this feature and stave off losing it for a couple years.

As it turns out, when I got some wireless ones I preferred them and now I don't use wired on my phone at all. I still dislike people telling me how to use my device but in reality it's OK.

Re: Only took Apple 2 years...

Apple has made about a trillionty dollars out of expensive phones, I don't think they realised this at all.

I agree though it's a good price-point if you want Apple but not to pay a fortune. Especially if you don't WANT a giant phone.

JDX Gold badge

Seems pretty good to me. Cheaper than OnePlus (quite a lot cheaper).

And let's not forget, lots of people don't really want a giant phone as screens get larger and larger. For many, this is probably a preferred form factor.

Intel's 10th-gen Core family cracks 5GHz barrier with H-series laptop processors

JDX Gold badge

Re: Good old intel

I would say their integrated GPUs are pretty impressive certainly compared to those from the past. Of course sheer grunt isn't available on something so small but the featureset in terms of shader model means you can actually DO GPU stuff on a business laptop now. In the past, that was basically impossible.

Yowser. I was under the impression that core speeds had stopped rising once they moved the focus to multiple cores. But I don't follow this stuff like I used to, is this the fancy "one core can supercharge if the others turn off and act as heat sinks" stuff?

I don't buy that their hub will help much but the discs are just a Mesh Wifi setup. With enough discs I don't see how the claim isn't reasonable (we have 3 in a 3-storey sprawling Victorian house with all internal walls made of brick and it works everywhere, though disc #4 would be better).

Now there are issues with the discs - sometimes one will stop working properly - but that's a separate issue.

UK government puts IR35 tax reforms on hold for a year in wake of coronavirus crisis

JDX Gold badge

Errata:

What is IR35?

IR35 is a tax reform that was unveiled in 1999 by the UK tax authorities. The latest regulation change will force medium and large businesses in the UK to set the tax status of their contractors and freelancers. Previously this was set by the contractors themselves.

Contractors found to be within the scope of the legislation – ie, inside IR35 – will have to pay the same tax and national insurance contributions as full-time employees, despite not receiving benefits such as holiday or sick pay, pension, or parental leave.

El Reg, this is factually incorrect. They will NOT pay the same tax as employees but without the same rights. They will pay more. Under IR35, you pay the company NI and the employee NI. i.e. you pay what employees do on their income, but you also pay the NI contributions companies make when paying employees.

This is quite an ommission.

And you know what else - Javascript isn't Java. GASP!

.Net is far superior to WASM and the JVM for people who are objective, and the toolchain for developers is better too.

C# is not C but it very deliberately uses C-derived syntax rather than Java syntax. As a C/C++ developer of many years, C# was an extremely intuitive language to pick up in early versions.

That you can "immediately see" the difference is proof that a neural network is pretty good for this sort of pattern detection. You might struggle to quantify it but you know it when you see it,

And no, you couldn't pull a function together in a few hours. You could maybe do so (maybe) for that one particular trace but it won't work on 99% of the other traces. Whereas your eyes could.

We can't rule out the idea that civilisations can last for long periods. Even modern humanity has been around for anything between 500-5000 years depending how you define 'modern'. We've no idea if our civilisation is just getting started or about to enter some sort of steady state, or likely to be gone soon, but neither do we have any idea what the norm is in other advanced civilisations... there might be some which exist for many thousands of years or even longer especially if we suppose intelligent life were quite common.
