Review: Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 WinPro 8 tablet

JDX Gold badge

Sounds shit

Not the concept, just the implementation on this model. What's the point of a tablet that is rain-proof if you can't actually use it outside - half the use-cases involve using it in situ not repairing to the van to enter the data.

Brits on benefits: 'Dole office site only works on PCs over 10 YEARS OLD'

Re: Problem?

Yeah, loads of benefits claimants know about Linux.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Do you know anyone on benefits? No, didn't think so

But the stereotype of the doleite who can afford Sky, fags, booze and a PS3 is very much true.

If you're on benefits, how do you even afford a smartphone?!

Re: Nice shopping

This is like Terry Pratchett's assertion that the rich can live for less than the poor because they can buy boots which cost 10X as much but last forever while the poor have to buy cheap ones that only last a year or two?

If you hard-boil them then it's a whole other sandwich - equally toast and fried/poached/scrambled egg or even toast & soldiers.

Review: Nokia Lumia 520

JDX Gold badge

Re: I'll check it out.

Normal people do not buy a phone based a on a list of statistics. It would be like buying a car purely for it's bhp and 0-60 rather than things like ride comfort, styling. etc.

Re: Landfill Android?

Clearly you have insider knowledge of MS patent portfolio in order to state that MS are FALSELY claiming people owe them money?

JDX Gold badge

No Gorilla glass

Surely everyone puts a screen protector on their pricey smartphone anyway so the smeariness issue is moot?

I'm very tempted to upgrade from my 610 but I guess I'll wait a bit. At this end of the market, it does sound a very good deal - for a basic smartphone apps are less of an issue I would imagine too since that's not what we want a budget phone for.

Pirates scoff at games dev sim's in-game piracy lesson

JDX Gold badge

Re: Was there a Demo version?

If the game's costing $8, it's not too unreasonable to buy it on a whim if reviews are OK (are there any?)

JDX Gold badge

Re: Ahh..

Loads of people who would buy a full version if they had no other choice, would still pirate a free copy. That doesn't mean every pirate copy is a lost sale, more the reverse - people used to pursue cheap imports in the old days in the same way.

Those who simply want to pirate will not buy games, but many genuine would-be buyers are lost when a free copy is so easy to get.

Google to Glass devs: 'Duh! Go ahead, hack your headset'

Making it hard to spot you're wearing them is a way off but you can already buy a hidden camera that lives in a button if you want to.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Targeted advertising...?

JDX Gold badge

Yeah, I mean your Android phone is just a constant barrage of targeted advertising, all over the homescreen, during phone and video calls, etc.

Re: Dear God

You need to learn about the reduced section and when the fill it up. I know a married couple who lived off £10 for their groceries as their regular life, and it wasn't even like they were just surviving, they could rustle up quite nice meals.

JDX Gold badge

Not representative

"By living off just £1 per day for food for 5 days, you will be bringing to life the direct experiences of the 1.4 billion people currently living in extreme poverty and helping to make real change."

In many of the poorest countries, £1 would buy you 3 meals... hell in some countries you could buy 3 beers with £1!

Amazon's cloud on track for $2bn in revenue in 2013

JDX Gold badge

I never really understood why Amazon have their own branded credit card. It doesn't seem to fit in with their other products and they seem relatively focused on their target markets (unlike Tesco for example). Other than a bit of extra cash, is there some good business logic for doing this?

Amazon: Hard luck Microsoft, AWS will always be cheaper

JDX Gold badge

Re: Lock-in

Easy to say, harder to do when you're talking about big amounts of data. Even if you have a copy, getting it into another setup is a big job because data volume has increased far faster than upload speeds.

JDX Gold badge

Re: @JDX

They could but they make tons of money from AWS as well. It would not do MS any good if their AWS customers got huge price hikes because migrating to Azure might be no easier than porting to Linux and staying on AWS without needing to migrate data.

Like seeing what you're watching based on your hashtags and tailoring ads for stuff in the show or deemed likely to be of interest. Advertising tailored to you based on what you're doing RIGHT NOW is pretty powerful potentially.

They make it easy to cancel though. You don't have to phone some pushy salesman to get them to allow you to cancel, which is my pet peeve for free trials. Not as good as those trials who let you pre-select not to pay when you sign up, but not bad.

Yes I wasn't being sarcastic... if you are happy with cheap bulky laptops then good for you but there's no need to tell the world you don't like slimline versions. I would rather spend £500 than £1500 myself but so what, both are available.
