Hollywood: How do we secure high-def 4K content? Easy. Just BRAND the pirates

JDX Gold badge

How do you know they can't find a way to make physical copies unique?

JDX Gold badge

Is this DRM or a better alternative?

Thinking about it, if watermarking is deemed secure then media providers don't need to be so paranoid about how they stream/deliver you the content. They can let you have the content to do with as you see fit, and still be confident they can identify you if you start distributing it.

Apple iMac 27-inch 2013: An extra hundred quid for what exactly?

JDX Gold badge

Re: "the company should include one of its external SuperDrives for free"

Yeah, it's certainly possible to run Windows on a Mac. I run mainly in Windows so would go the bootcamp route if it ever came about. My Desktop PC and MacBook are both getting quite old...

JDX Gold badge

"the company should include one of its external SuperDrives for free"

I can see where you're coming from but think this is a stupid idea. It wouldn't really be "free", it would merely mean the 90% of people who don't want an optical drive are subsidising the minority who do.

Personally, I would absolutely love a 27" iMac, but they're just so damn pricey. I was seriously considering it as I do iOS development, but then I looked at the Mac Mini spec/pricing... the only way an iMac could be justified for me is if it replaced my existing Mac AND Windows PC.

Poor miserable Ballmer's pay SLASHED to a measly $1.26m

JDX Gold badge

Re: Ballmer’s bonus was just 79 per cent of his eligible total

I don't care a fig if they want to pay him $millions, but it seems silly that if Surface and W8 and WP8 had all done great, he'd NOT be able to be paid much extra.

JDX Gold badge

Ballmer’s bonus was just 79 per cent of his eligible total

So he stunk up Windows 8 AND Surface and still gets 79% of his maximum possible bonus? What exactly did he achieve to get this 79%? OK, WindowsPhone is showing some promising signs of growth but nothing stellar.

Seems like he should be getting 21% of his bonus, not losing 21% of his bonus.

A full x86 Windows PC in a tablet by its very nature kicks Android and iOS to the side, simply because you can do literally anything on it.

The problem with Pro is basically the price, not the spec or the OS.

Not even a small developer would trust it for private, internal code

What a stupid thing to say. Many, many businesses use services like github, bitbucket, asssembla.

Apart from anything else there are a whole slew of tech/software companies who are virtual/decentralised... they don't have a central location or an office in which to put a server.

Keeping a backup separate is another story of course. As is the fact that with git, losing your 'central' server doesn't matter.

But a physical git server in your basement... you do realise that's just security through obscurity, right? The moment anyone does want to attack you, you are far more likely to have serious problems. "Close the git server from the web" isn't an option if you want to allow your developers to work remotely.

Re: think of the children

Your children likely won't even view the issue of privacy in the same way you do, just as young adults today view communications very differently from their parents (young person: I don't feel right without my phone with me. old person: I only turn the phone on if I want to use it).

Since privacy isn't enshrined as a basic human right (at least I don't think it is, though I am ready to be corrected) it's not possible to say "the old way is best" objectively.

Yes, and Google employ people, providing them the money on which to be taxed, spend in shops, etc. There is an argument that all tax should be point of sale.

JDX Gold badge

That's slightly more than the £7.3m the ad giant coughed up in 2011.

Last time I checked, an increase of 53.4% is more than slight.

Docking

Isn't one of the strengths of Apple's connectors that they are big enough to have some strength, and allow you to drop the device into a docking station?

Does that work with micro-USB? Or could/would Apple put a micro-USB as well as their fancy docking thingie?

I wonder if Apple could/would push their socket to BE the standard.

Desktop App Stores

Have even Apple convinced their users that buying desktop applications through an App Store is the best route? I don't really like it but I don't know many Mac users to ask their opinions.

JDX Gold badge

Re: 3 different code bases was a mistake

While mobile apps are generally limited compared to what a full blown desktop application CAN do, that doesn't mean you'd never want to install a mobile app on our PC. I think it would be useful in fact because a basic tool costing a quid is sometimes all you need, not an application for £30.

Even being able to play some mobile games on your Mac/PC would be nice at times.

Full Steam Ahead: Valve unwraps plans for gaming hardware

JDX Gold badge

Re: Watching with interest

"And consoles like that are the reason that modern games have to be deliberately dumbed down. PC game development is stagnating because of the constant need to make them run on outdated hardware."

That's totally untrue. For a start 90% of the extra power is used for prettier graphics only, which doesn't make the game less dumb.

Then, PC games have to support a range of hardware. This means it has to be as 'dumb' as the minimum spec allows. You don't get games which have better AI on faster machines, or gameplay features.

A fixed spec forces developers to work to get the most out of the hardware. This takes time... on a PC you don't get time to fine-tune to your hardware because it keeps changing. Take a release title from PS2/3 and the most recent games and compare them.

JDX Gold badge

SteamOS

I know Steam/Valve have been promoting Linux for a while now, but aren't most steam games still Windows-only? Has supporting Linux on Steam actually been enough to get developers to do the extra work or like most PC games outside Steam, do the developers spurn Linux as not being a big enough market?

A proper Linux platform will presumably make supporting Linux more attractive but you need a critical mass like WP8 appstore all over again).

Any [Linux] Steam users able to comment on the current state of affairs?
