applications always run 10 times as slow and take 4 times the memory still
How is this kind of ignorant statement getting up-votes? One would hope Reg readers weren't that dumb.

All the negative comments are basically "it's not much better than GT5". But GT5 was/is very well regarded isn't it?
I don't have any GT game other than GT5 prologue so on that basis it seems like GT6 is wonderful... as long as you don't already have GT5?
Or should I use this as an opportunity to buy GT5 cheap?
Or because some of us don't want to download kilobytes of extraneous data in web-pages?
Have page-shrinkers ever really become the norm (i.e. cut comments, rename variables as short as possible), or has widespread ADSL meant nobody cares any more?
I'd assumed it had died like so many other Google technologies e.g. Gears. And what's the story with NaCl while we're on the subject - gaining traction or just another technologically cool idea that isn't going to take off in real life?
I really don't think the right idea is to introduce ANOTHER language. Being able to re-use code between your browser and desktop apps (and even the server for shared libraries) is surely a better idea than having to port your code, rewrite standard libs from one language that don't exist in another, etc?
Streamlined versions of JS are not solving the underlying problem.
I suppose you're thinking along the lines of Apollo 13 where nobody wants to watch anymore? If they really get people living on Mars, I think you can bet the project will attract more serious attention.
Plus, even if/when attention wanes, I reckon the first colony will still attract a lot of TV viewers around the globe. Even another moon landing would get a lot of interest.
I'm not sure I would have been quick to criticise a laptop with 8Gb RAM, a 2GB GPU and an i7 for not being well-specced!
Also, good to see there are still some decent 17" options out there, it seemed like that size was being killed off the last few years but for me it would be essential in a desktop replacement.
Were people ever interested/excited in buying a PC/laptop for its own sake? Other than ultrabooks or gaming rigs, the whole point of a PC is that it isn't exciting, it's just something you need. You don't get people excited about the Ford Focus or a crowd in the toaster section, but people keep buying them.
Of course people buy a PC with Windows not Windows alone, but it was very clear that last year, people were NOT buying PCs BECAUSE they had W8. The hope is clearly 8.1 does enough to remove the OS as an impediment to purchasing a new machine.
As for WP Vs iOS, it's not hard to out-sell a company who only sell expensive high-end products, on number of units sold. No doubt Lada used to outsell Porsche.
