Creepy Facebook urges users to pester friends about their SEX LIVES

Re: Zuck ... wants to "connect the world" not for altruistic reasons, but ... to please Wall Street.

You totally fail to get it. I see absolutely no contradiction. Zuck can genuinely believe that FB is doing good, just as Tony Blair and George W Bush believed they were acting for good.

Also, you're either trolling or an idiot because nowhere did anyone suggest "selling personal information about people is an altruistic act". That is FB's business model, not the service they provide to consumers.

You might as well say that if I invent a cancer drug and sell it, I can't be acting for good because I'm making money from sickness. You can make money from something that is of benefit, the world is not black & white no matter what borderline-autistic nerds say.

Zuck ... wants to "connect the world" not for altruistic reasons, but ... to please Wall Street.

Um, why can't it be both?

Also it doesn't actually mention sex lives at all....

Re: A tablet with a FAN?

You think someone buying a tablet is interested if there's a fan or not? You realise the MacBook Air has a fan, and that that's more what this is competing with? It's a fully specced PC with detachable keyboard, not a toy for playing Flappy Bird on.

Re: Downvotes

You can't be critical or complimentary of MS or Apple in this thread. If you want free upvotes just mention how MS can go **** themselves, the laptop you rescued from a skip and installed Pretentious-Linux on is perfect for your needs.

Re: Intel discovered back in 2012 that users found 13" too small.

That's why Apple (http://www.apple.com/uk/mac/compare/notebooks.html) currently only sell a single laptop with a screen size above 13", dropped the 17" one altogether, and brought in a new 11" line. And gained market share at the same time.

Re: Who ate all the pies?

THe iPad doesn't have a 12" screen or a full-blown i7 CPU. These are totally different devices, as was mentioned this is competing more with MacBook Air than iPad Air.

Seems like it could be a big hit in business, I don't think this version is really a consumer-oriented device but a business device... interest in Surface Pro has mainly been from that market.

Re: Retarded camera

Why do you need to shoot HD video, especially on a device that's going to be shaking around in your hand? All you'd end up with is really crap, poorly lit/coloured video, with awful sound quality, in HD.

JDX Gold badge

I'm not sure video-calling is that widely used even on top-end phones,,, by which I mean there is certainly a big market segment of people who don't use this and would buy a phone without the capability.

As for selfies (ugh) it's not that hard to take a photo of oneself surely?

Boffins run iOS apps on Android hardware

Re: I bought Android so I could AVOID iTunes

I recently caved and put iTunes on my Windows7 PC because it was a pain having to turn on the Mac just to put content on my iPad. I've heard terrible things about the Windows version in particular (the Mac one seems fine) but so far so good,,, maybe it improved a lot in recent versions or I'm just lucky.

Re: The trouble with 'touch' on the desktop...

I'm not sure that's a real problem for the majority of people, although it's become a common argument against touch-PCs. Touch isn't mainstream in the consumer world but touch-screens are used by some people all day in specific jobs - mostly factory-based I'd guess.

As a student I had a job as a checkout-dolly in Tesco. You spend 8 hours sitting on a chair sticking your arms out in front of you to pick up items and move them over the scanner, and interacting with a touch-screen checkout. Arguably, having to pick things up is even worse than having to stick your arms out to tap a screen, but people don't have special harnesses or whatever and you see people in their 50s who do this day in day out.

So I don't think the automatic "it's bad for you" response can be taken as gospel, any more than a chair manufacturer telling you that standing up all day is bad for you!

Microsoft throws Kinect under a bus, slashes Xbox One to $399

JDX Gold badge

Re: Slashes price?...

Did you have a choice to buy it without Kinect before? If you don't want kinect, it is a price reduction to the consumer regardless what it saves the producer.

JDX Gold badge

No games, a shame

I think it's a shame developers aren't pushing the Kinect aspect for games. Previously PS3/XB360 developers had a tough choice, most people didn't have motion-sensitive controllers so requiring them was taking a big risk, whereas on the WII you knew it was there and could build around that foundation.

Personally, proper motion-controlled games are a real new lease of live when done well, in sports games mainly. Obviously, gratuitously forcing it for every game is silly but a console with guaranteed Kinect sounded like a wonderful opportunity to push things forward. But presumably having to release on other platforms still acts as a "lowest common denominator" anchor - you want to develop a motion-control-only game, not try and tack on motion-control (or game pad support) for another platform.

Re: Meh.

>>The Xbox One still has a 50% power deficiet over the PS4, and every game to date has ended up vastly inferior on XB1... Nothing will change that for the next 8 years, specs are set in stone, DX12 and driver improvements will maybee claw back 1% at best, and Sony can do the same...

What utter garbage. Punters don't buy based on CPU MHz and consoles have never been about raw power otherwise everyone would buy PCs instead. The PS2 and XBox were not evenly matched and the PS2 architecture was notoriously difficult to program for well (I worked at a game developer in this era).

That you think better drivers can only claw back 1% performance increase at best, is a good indicator of how much you know about these things - drivers can be totally transformational depending how good the original ones are.

You can see a big difference between £5 and £50 sunglasses though just as you can tell the difference between a S5 and a £100 Android phone even when they're turned off.

JDX Gold badge

Re: @JDX - "When you buy Google Glass for $1,500...

Great counter-argument. Laser discs didn't make it but CDs and DVDs and other optical media did. Glass is a similar earlier forerunner of wearable tech. Saying Glass won't make it is a fair point, saying that this is the same as wearables not taking off is asinine.

JDX Gold badge

JDX Gold badge

Re: "When you buy Google Glass for $1,500...

I was going to make a scathing remark about supposed IT experts being so out of touch that they dismiss something which is clearly going to be huge, but then even industry leaders consistently fail to predict what seems utterly obvious in hindsight (the famous Bill Gates mis-quote for example).

Stop being so unbelievably arrogant as to think that because you don't find a prototype product immediately useful, that the concept won;t be of interest to the wider market.

But I'm wasting my words. I'm talking to the community who though the iPad would never take off and that tablets were just a gimmick, and (IIRC) that touch-screen phones would not replace physical keypads.

Re: Just the ticket

ANY software that's web-based can change design at any time whether you pay or not.

But then, so can desktop software - you can refuse to update to the newer version but that really is only a short-term protest until you give in or stop using the software, because you not only miss out on bug-fixes and new features but may likely find the server stops supporting your client version at some point.

"Look identical across a variety of screen sizes" and "function across a variety of screen sizes" are entirely different things. Separating content from layout is what CSS has been doing for the last decade.

Re: Still not used to their weird thread view

It is sane... most users are happy with it so as a default it is acceptable. I don't see any unintended consequences - the thread is an entity not an individual email message so if I delete the thread, it is deleted.

That threads you deleted come back when a new reply is received is a little weirder but better than having orphaned messages I reckon. And the fact deleted messages are so easy to find and undelete makes it moot in most cases.
