Analyst: 'revolutionary, compelling' iPhone 5 out in October

Re: and for the last time?

HTC et al are continuing to pump out high-end £500 phones with ever-more powerful CPUs, and I think they reached the limit on what's useful a generation ago.

History has shown that thinking "it doesn't need to get any faster" would be very naive, even stupid. Our predecessors didn't know different but we've seen it happen and should learn from that!

Anyway I'm off to buy Apple shares :)

Biologists create synthetic DNA capable of EVOLUTION

JDX Gold badge

Re: Funny thing

I have a similar thought - that when evolutionists talk about how things happened gradually over millions of years, I'm amazed it could happen so fast!

It's an interesting experiment but they seem to be coming at it backwards, making a special version of DNA and trying to reverse the process. Is anyone trying to work the way nature did, but accelerated?

Nvidia: phone GPUs to outplay current consoles by 2014

JDX Gold badge

ignored the fact that by then current-gen consoles won't be PS3s and XBox 360s

No they haven't. Read it again. It doesn't alter the fact that if a phone can equal a PS3/XBox360, it is a viable console replacement, considering the Wii is a generation behind and does pretty well.

Also, the GPUs are slow due to power requirements. Presumably if they want to go this direction, a phone could have a chipset which has extra power when plugged into the mains... similar idea to Tegra3, sort of. The issue is then if you can pack enough CPU/GPU into a phone's volume without it catching fire. and the asnwer is probably going to be yes.

Re: Battery

Your phone can be plugged in when used for console gaming.

In fact, your phone might not even me the controller, but take the place of the PS3 itself, and you get a separate wireless controller. Or something.

Apple throws free Snow Leopard bone at MobileMe punters

JDX Gold badge

Re: SL is Intel-only

I doubt that. Most people who bought Macs with Leopard probably haven't upgraded, for the same reason most Windows users never upgrade the OS or hardware - they haven't the first clue how to, and possibly don't even know you CAN upgrade the OS, or what that even means.

JDX Gold badge

On the contrary, paying for an OS is a bit like how I pay a plumber to fix my plumbing, because I can't be arsed to waste my own time doing it.

Except the users who want a proper office suite rather than web-enabled version of WordPad.

Actually that's not fair, the word-processor is crap but the spread-sheet is pretty good for the average user.

Re: Cloud? Meh

Well obviously MS will be devastated that one person doesn't want cloud services, and will probably pull the contest as a result.

Compulsory coding in schools: The new Nerd Tourism

JDX Gold badge

No, shopping and phone/utility tariffs, etc are not GCSE level math. They are primary school level arithmetic. Basic arithmetic skills absolutely should be compulsory but even GCSE is beyond that level - simple algebra, trigonometry, etc.

The only 'useful' bit of real maths to the typical person is basic probability, to understand gambling :)

JDX Gold badge

We force every single child to take Maths to GCSE level, which is mostly stuff of no use. Why is this different to programming?

For English/History/Geography it's different as they teach you general things about the world you live in, but forcing education in Maths and science would naturally extend to computing.

Don't force everyone to do it a long time though - show them some basics and then see who is interested taking it further.

Windows 8 diet exposes Microsoft's weak ARM

JDX Gold badge

they will break that news to Lumia owners

no, because nobody expects it too, anymore than they expect iPhone apps to run on their Mac.

Well, nobody apart from dumb Linux fanbois apparently.

Re: The Windows 8 Disaster.

Windows is a brand, as you well know.

JDX Gold badge

Whether a user should pick Windows 8 or Windows RT is less straightforward

With all those ARM-based PCs on the market? RT is for tablets, maybe things will get more grey later but not yet.

JDX Gold badge

Re: The Windows 8 Disaster.

They also didn't mention Windows Phone won't run Windows apps for the same reason - it's a separate OS. That's why it's called Windows 8 and Windows RT, not Windows 8 RT.

Re: Still not getting it, are you Microsoft?

It's still not a normal use case. Even for someone running a media PC, RDP is a bit technical - hence it makes the pro version.

JDX Gold badge

I wondered that too, but perhaps it's built-in functionality rather than WMP.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Still not getting it, are you Microsoft?

You're not supposed to run a media centre by remote-desktopping into it. That's the whole point of DLNA, etc.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Looks like a bid to be relevant in the modern world

Low because that wouldn't fly in the business world at all. Even Apple don't force you to have an Apple ID when you install MacOSX.

JDX Gold badge

On the PC maybe (or probably), on the tablet it could be pretty good.

I'm impressed they are apparently including Office on RT, but isn't that going to annoy the ones who thought even bundling a browser was too far?

Brits get red PlayStation 3 next month

JDX Gold badge

I don't get it

If I was going to buy a PS3 I might prefer a coloured version for greater choice. But no way would I ever make the decision to buy a PS3 based on coloured versions being available, or trade in my black one for a coloured one at extra cost+hassle.

A slimline version is different, but what's the point of coloured ones so many years into the PS3 lifespan?

I've been to the finals of their annual tournament and the dominance of non-western competitors is dramatic. However, E. Europe is giving China a very strong fight. That's why I tend to hire Ukrainian or similar offshore coders rather than Indian.

JDX Gold badge

re: It's not an iPad 3. It's an update.

It's both, you idiot. The entire point of calling something "iPad 2" is that it's the next update to the iPad line.

There is as much change between iPad -> iPad2 as from iPad2 -> new iPad (3).
