US! govt! ordered! Yahoo! to! hand! over! user! data! or! pay! $250k! fine! PER! DAY!
Re: I used to concider Yahoo! as the scourge of the email giants..
Make note that of all these corporations and the hundreds if not thousands of people who knew what was going on, NOT ONE went to a newspaper and became a confidential source. This took place over years and no one said anything until Ed Snowden snatched the honor.
If they (Google, Yahoo, MS, et al.) truly felt this was unconstitutional they should have A) Made a public declaration and fought it out in court or B) made a bee line for the newspapers as confidential informants and stopped this in the tracks.
They didn't and here we are. The one person who did something about this is vilified and on the run from American "Justice". There's only one hero in this story.
Sellouts! Fans snap up iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders to avoid store queues
If the web site outages are not part of some marketing scheme then they truly have poor engineers working in Cupertino to have such access issues time after time, year after year.
Just checked the Apple site. The $949 model turns into $1,400 by the time you add on AppleCare and charging cords.
That's a pass for me.

I can hear Steve Jobs screaming "That #$%ing Watch is too thick. The interface needs work. It's too damned complex and who the hell picked those bands."
I suppose it's OK if it's a fashion item rather than an electronic device. As the missus would say, "These shoes are really uncomfortable, but they look cute."

I watched a woman in the airport in Puerto Rico. She plugged her iPhone into the communal charging post surrounded by several other white cords. I noticed her screen never turned off and she came back every 5-6 minutes to check her texts and type responses. I heard her mutter to her boyfriend about how the phone was not charging "properly".
If your phone is smarter than you, you shouldn't be allowed to have it.

SpaceX prototype rocket EXPLODES over Texas. 'Tricky' biz, says Elon Musk

Where is the usual 1080 vid from SpaceX? Held back by their spin doctors?
C'mon Elon, pad explosions have happened since Peenemünde. Be open about the bad as much as the good. I'll have a lot more confidence in SpaceX if you did especially if you want my butt on a rocket to Mars at some point.
AMD unveils 'single purpose' graphics card for PC gamers and NO ONE else
"The AMD Radeon R9 285 graphics card is faster than Nvidia’s GTX 760.1," the company claimed. "That’s because we designed it for a single purpose: to play demanding PC games at maximum detail better than any card in its class."
WTH? Isn't this the definition of video cards that have been made for the last twelve years?

Hello, police, El Reg here. Are we a bunch of terrorists now?
Having a government dictate what you can see, read, and hear for "your protection" is the first step to despotism. It only increases over time and eventually leads to a Little Red Book or Mein Kampf becoming leading literature for the masses.
Governments work for us. We tell them what to do. Once governments begin dictating edicts to the people, you no longer live in a democracy.

Brother, can you spare a DIME for holy grail of secure webmail?
Re: The biggest problem with encrypted email
The biggest problem with encrypted email is not everyone is using it. Crims already do and that leaves regular folks email accounts open to government intrusion. Their going into your email account is no different than going into your home searching for evidence of wrong doing. Believe me, if this activity is not stopped soon and the paranoia curtailed that is exactly what will happen in the future. Those web cams and mics built into your TV, PC, tablet, phone, and fridge will be under government control soon.

"One thing I do know is that it is the job of network administrators to know about these issues and deal with them. "
I would say the hardware vendors and the folks who set the standards should be lined up against the wall before the admins. If there is a 512K limit then it should be made into a circular list. As new usage routes come online, the ones that have not been used the longest get dropped. Keeping a list of dead router paths serves no purpose and is the real flaw in the system.
Tim Cook on pale, male Apple: 'As CEO, I'm NOT satisfied'
Re: Well I am not happy with Cook.
Sorry, I don't put up with this BS. Hiring someone for a job primarily on their skin color or religion is racist, period. Hire someone because of their qualifications. If they are not qualified, thanks for applying. If they are, hire them. It is that simple and these politically correct they must be 13% this color and 17% this religion is garbage.
