Nice software for niche workers?

This time tracking your work nonsense was proposed at a place I worked at by my newly hired boss at the time. After implementation, productivity took a nose dive. When staff evaluations came around, this was a talking point on everyone's evaluation. Once it was all pieced together, it turned out that the lost productivity on our jobs was put into entering in what we did, instead of moving on the next fire...

Re: Thinking Time

20 years ago, my boss of the time would go have a cig break, which meant leaving the building. He would come back with a theory, and damned if they didn't usually work. I don't know if it was the fresh air, or change of scenery, but it seemed to work!

Scrape off the Win11 UI, and you'll find all the familiar control panels buried underneath. I was astonished that after three clicks in different "new" settings and control panels to find the old friendly stuff we remember, like advanced settings to change your page file, and tell Windows to adjust for best performance etc. If I had to use Win11 as a daily driver, my productivity would be horrible.

What's next? Changing the order of the alphabet? And calling it progress?

Some bosses!

I had one boss that was great. Sure I got called for a few things, but he knew when to chuck in the towel, and when to keep the upper manglement off our backs when we had to recover from a case of intense idiocy... Funny, it's only been a year since I worked for him, some days it seem like 20 years ago, and some days it was only yesterday.

Mouse Balls! prank or hyjinx?

During the summer vacation at one place, the second floor would be opened from one end to the other for various workers, cleaners, painters etc. Every door was opened, and you could see out of the office 150m down the hall. At lunch one day, I grabbed a hand full of old style mouse balls, and headed to the end of the hall and started 'bowling' the mouse balls the length of the building. I might have rolled 3 out of 10 end to end. I got some strange looks from a colleague in an office I thought was empty.

Don't lock the datacenter door, said the boss. The builders need access and what could possibly go wrong?

chivo243 Silver badge
Headmaster

Datacenter door?

I worked at a place that when summer vacation rolled around, every door was open, every office everything... Painters needed access, cleaners needed access, engineers from outside companies needed access... In over 20 years, we lost a bit of gear due to that policy. Half a dozen laptops or so, a couple of iMacs and a projector. There was also one non-IT item, but it escapes me at the moment, I guess they chalked it up to the cost of doing business?
