Crooks sell skint fanbois potatoes instead of iPhones

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: Victims? Really?

Absolutely, I think Political Correctness has had it's day.

Can someone also convince me that it is possible to withdraw £1400 from a cash machine? The most I can get is £500 (I suppose he could have used multiple cards)

Off-the-shelf forensics tool slurps iPhone data via iCloud

Sir Runcible Spoon

Sir

I'm guessing that this isn't just read-only access that is achieved.

If this is the case then how trivial would it be for a bent copper (they do exist you know) to put a bit of incriminating info on the records of the suspected perp?

Surely this would eventually undermine evidencial(sp?) integrity when it comes to court? Especially if this software gets out into the wild.

Re: From the Dead Sheep Dept

It seems to me that the Tories like the economy in good order so they can skim off the top.

Labour are just incompetent and give out money to all and sundry for the most ridiculous purposes.

Not defending the Tories here btw, but compared to Labour they have more respect for money.

UK's '£1.2bn software pirates' mostly 'blokes under 34'

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: Sir

Hi Harmony, you appear to have missed the general tongue-in-cheek tone, and also the "that icon was supposed to be a joke alert!" notice.

I know they are mostly pirating Western products, or retro-engineering them and making new ones just like the Wests'. My point was that it seems to have given them an edge in the global economy.

Our lawmasters will be splitting hairs with the MPAA for years whilst Chinese conglomerates quietly buy us all up.

All other factors aside, this is obviously why China is struggling so much in the global economy.

I only posted this because I referenced your post to the chap a few posts below who didn't realise you'd already posted this link. I claimed 4 posts above but I think it was only three, hence the filler :)

Sir Runcible Spoon

Really? I can't believe you didn't spot it about 4 posts above your own :)

You could always try route poisoning. Especially as more and more people have traffic aware GPS.

I'm not sure if anyone has covered this point yet, apologies if so.

The reason there are 'pirates' is because the 'industry' needs them. How else could they drive through Orwellian controls over the internet without a bogeyman?

Same principle applies in government and social controls - you need a bogeyman[person?] in order to put fear into the populace so that they will accept more controls.

Re: DNS or IP block?

It might not actually be legal to implement an IP block, consider http1.1 - they could end up blocking a lot of other people if the hosting is done on shared servers.

That said, I believe Web Blocker is DPI URL based rather than DNS (other DNS are available after all).

The Ethernet Alliance is thinking fast

Sir Runcible Spoon

Sir

One of the biggest bottlenecks (for certain things) isn't the network, it's disk write speed.

I've done analysis work on many networks and we struggle to capture all the data on a 10Ge link, let alone a 40 (assuming it's running at 50% or so).

Distributed architecture for disk access needs to be developing as fast as the network if this growth rate is to be sustained.

Re: Sir

'cept HTTPS uses port 443 by default; 80 is (unencrypted) HTTP, unless you are meaning the rarely-used SHTTP?

No, I mean you can run https on any port you want, and then connect to it with the addition of a :nnnn at the end of the dns or ip address (where nnnn is the selected port).

Just because default behaviour is to have http unencrypted on port 80, there's nothing to stop you running a secure socket on port 80, or even 8080, or even 53, or 21, or 23, for example.

Sir Runcible Spoon

Sir

You can run an SSL vpn on any port you like.

Oh dear, none of my drives have failed (yet - famous last words) but they have been chattering all that time, not just now they are getting a bit full.

Sir Runcible Spoon

Sir

I bought a 4 bay terastation about 5 years ago and it hasn't missed a beat in all that time.

The only problem I have with is it's constant chattering. I've neglected going SSD because I think it would just wear them out.

The support team couldn't tell me why it was constantly chattering either, so not a plus for support.

Official: Britain staggers into double-dip recession doom

Sir Runcible Spoon

Sir

People on the bread-line are having a really tough time of it, that's understood. What is happening now though is that the middle classes are starting to feel it like never before, and a lot of that can be laid at the banks' doorsteps.

They were given billions to bail them out and start lending again, but they haven't. Even if you manage to convince a bank to lend you money, it comes with a lot of strings and a massively inflated interest rate compared to the inter-bank lending rates.

I make my living selling services to the banks and I'm retraining in another field right now because it makes me feel too dirty to be supporting them to be honest.

"So if enough people want to do something, it should simply be legalised? Good way to reduce crime figures, at the cost of absolute idiocy."

It isn't idiocy, that's the way the world (should) work.

What we have is a group of special interests (small number of people) with lots of power telling other people (large number of people) what and who they can do, whilst ignoring the rules themselves - that's idiocy.
