Schmidt 'very proud' of Google's tiny tax bill: 'It's called capitalism'

Re: Can see

"but he does have a point."

Indeed, one could argue that the entire tax structure of 'Europe' has been built around these principles - why on Earth would any business not take advantage of lucrative tax situations - as long as it's all legal.

I get a bit fed up of politicians claiming someone else is morally bankrupt - talk about pot meets kettle. Fiddling expenses is ILLEGAL, but tax AVOIDANCE is not - not that hard to work out.

If the politicians weren't in it up to their necks they would be closing the loopholes - but all we get are soundbytes, inquiries and 'he's been bad - won't the public please punish them for us because we can't because they haven't done anything illegal'.

Bloody hypocrites.

We have enough power

We just need to learn to use it properly.

From what I've seen, the vast majority of code is bloated and lazy, with people lifting libraries from other programs and 'tweaking' them.

If you could make a program that had the coding efficiencies of Elite with modern equipment, I don't think we would need to worry about the power of our computers.

Unless you are running the latest 3D games and triple 24" 1600*1200 screens and absolutely won't accept anything less than 60fps then I think we could get by with what we have*.

*I realize this is, of course, blasphemy. I expect to be punished.

Securing the DB's

There should be a legal obligation within the design proposal that this DB is strictly *limited* to 100,000 entries and can not be used for any other purpose other than medical research. Criminal penalties attach to the Home Secretary of the day for any breach.

If they haven't got anything to hide, this wouldn't worry them would it?

You could say that about every person who manages to break from the herd and be an individual.

In this case we have a man who was an inspiration and an idol to many, and also had a wicked sense of humour.

There is new star in the skies and he will always be fondly remembered (unlike some other 'celebrities' I could mention).

Global warming still stalled since 1998, WMO Doha figures show

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: Stop the cherry picking

Here is the quote:

Dr. Peter Stott, Head of Climate Monitoring and Attribution at the Met Office, said: "Although the first decade of the 21st century was the warmest on record, warming has not been as rapid since 2000 as over the longer period since the 1970s.

"This variability in global temperatures is not unusual, with several periods lasting a decade or more with little or no warming since the instrumental record began. We are investigating why the temperature rise at the surface has slowed in recent years, including how ocean heat content changes and the effects of aerosols from atmospheric pollution may have influenced global climate."

There does appear to be some emphasis indicating that a 10 year period of warming isn't that unusual, whilst accepting that there is still some warming going on. Unless I'm misreading it, he is saying that the rate of warming is decreasing and they are looking into why that might be - because it certainly isn't due to a reduced amount of CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere is it?

I'd just like to point out that being a 'human induced global warming by means of excess co2' sceptic does not mean that I don't believe it is possible that we are the cause, just that I have yet to be convinced by the evidence.

Evidence, that is, which subsequently does not turn out to be 'massaged' in some way.

Unless it was supposed to be 314 times more likely. Just seems weird and out of place here where people don't just accept the written word and there are pedants everywhere.
