'Snoopers' Charter IS DEAD', Lib Dems claim as party waves through IP address-matching

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: And another thing

"And I think I can say, since I'm not a Labour MP, that Rochester White Van Man is stupid since he has just been fooled into voting for someone who regards him as a useful idiot helping him get into power"

Are you sure about your facts here?..

"He (Dan Ware) is the sort of voter Labour needs on its side if it is to stand any chance at next year’s general election, but is so disaffected with politics he says he “can’t even remember when I last voted” because: “No matter who you have in, it doesn’t matter.” He had not even been aware that a by-election was happening in Rochester and Strood before reporters started knocking on his door. "

So he wasn't fooled into voting at all.

Two driverless cars stuffed with passengers are ABOUT TO CRASH - who should take the hit?

I seem to recall from my hang-gliding training that there is a standard direction to swerve (to port I think) in the event of an imminent collision.

Re: Ask Asimov

"1.A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm."

The problem with this law is the 'through inaction' bit and that superceding the 'obey human orders' bit.

Remove that (or put it below the obeying a human) bit and you're golden. If someone orders a robot to do something that (through inaction) allows someone to die, then the responsibility is the humans, not the robots - exactly as it should be.

Sir Runcible Spoon
Pint

This is not even a logical question.

"Last week Fujitsu CTO Joseph Reger raised the example of two autonomously driven vehicles, both containing human passengers, en route for an “inevitable” head-on collision on a mountain road"

Unless the two AI's are in (fast) communication there is only one decision process going on here.

Each AI must make the best decision available to it for the humans it is currently responsible for. It is not in charge of the 'other' vehicles occupants therefore cannot decide.

What if the other car doesn't have an AI?

What if the other cars AI has comms problems?

What if the other AI is making a similar decision to sacrifice it's own humans based on slightly differently biased information - everyone would die!

The only thing we can program an AI with in terms of morality is the equivalent of a human.

For example, you are driving your family along a road at night. All of a sudden a similar group of people to yours has just emerged from a hidden path and is now, on foot, directly in front of you.

You only have time to

a) brake as hard as you can and plough into the pedestrians

b) take avoiding action and drive you and your family off the road, next to which is a 200 ft drop to a river meaning almost certain death.

I would choose a) in an instant. I would also choose a) after some serious thought as well since it offers the most chance to the most people. If I try and avoid them, me and my family would almost certainly die, if I hit them me and my family would almost certainly survive. For the pedestrians, they would certainly survive if I went off the cliff - but they may stand a better chance to survive being hit by a car than we would by hitting a river after a 200 ft nosedive.

In essence, most of the time you can only act to save yourself and those you are responsible for as it taps into your basic instincts for survival - anything else will take up precious moments and everyone could die.

Thanks for that, it gives me some idea of what I'll be laying out.

If I can convince wifey (or knock her out until the deed is done) I was planning on building a dedicated cockpit and build the PC into the frame - have some of the water cooling pipes pop out here and there. That, along with a paint-job might make it looks pretty snazzy even when not using the Rift :) It'll be bloody useless for anything else mind - but this setup is basically what I've been dreaming about since I first played Elite all those years ago - so I don't see why I should compromise.

I reckon £2k should just about do it :) (after scavenging some re-usable components from current stock)

Sir Runcible Spoon

I hear-tell that you need to push around 60fps to the Rift to reduce vision issues, what kind of rig would you need to do that?

Sir Runcible Spoon

Actually I'd be more interested to see how the 360 version plays, since I'm not going to bother with the next-gen consoles (saving up for a super-rig to play elite with an OR when it gets released)

Re: Sounds like a business plan

I read on another site that the clause did, in fact, state 'per review' - and it was against the organiser - so if you organised a pensioners outing for 10 to Blackpool and two of them posted a negative review, the organiser would be charged £200.

There's no way this is legal.

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: Sounds like a business plan

Assuming (for a second) that the penalty is enforceable, does it say 'per bad review' ? If not then you could also report them to the Police for fraud/theft/whatever :)

Couldn't agree more. Having recently been asked to provide high and low level designs for new technologies (that I've never touched before) in under a month is always going to be a struggle, but having a good general knowledge and with the proper attitude you get it done.

On a subsequent call I was asked to deliver yet another set of designs for one of a choice of security systems. I was asked which one I preferred to do, to which I responded - "I don't mind, I'm equally ignorant of all of them". No-one minds that kind of answer if they know you have got what it takes to do the job anyway and it's an approach I often take at interviews as well.

"Nope - I don't know the answer to that, but I can find out fairly quickly because I understand all the underlying principles involved"

Any further attempts to debit your account will incur a penalty fee of £100 to cover costs of clearing your credit rating and any time wasted trying to deal with the company in question.

Penalties must be paid within 28 days of invoice (and do send them one) and will attract late payment fees of an additional £15 if missing plus interest at 5% per month.

Put that in a letter, recorded delivery, to the finance director or company secretary - making sure to scan it first and also send it via email if you can find an account.

Tracer Rounds and triangulation

Imagine your network traffic as bullets from a gun.

It's much easier for the enemy to locate your position if you are using tracer rounds and rapid fire (lots of traffic and identifiable cookies etc.) or even to use sound triangulation if you are not.

The individual sniper shot from a fresh location in the midst of a battle is much harder to track down.

What has it got to do with the ISP's? They haven't created the material, and they haven't 'propogated' it either, they have merely provided a set of wet strings along which we can communicate with one another.

If we were talking about unpaid bills, warning letters etc. before that happening then that's one thing, what I don't like is the prospect of someone deciding to cut my power off just for kicks (I'm not just referring to the power companies here) and bucks.

If these things are hackable without physical access and are capable of turning my power off, I will do everything I can to safeguard the device from remote interference, regardless of whatever 'security' measures these things are eventually supplied with.

It's true I might be over-thinking it, but it has always offended me for some reason (not sure if having ADHD has any bearing on it particularly).

Re: My golden rule since my card was cloned at a Texaco petrol station

I've often wondered why people refer to 'the wife' as if they were just one of many possessed items(as in 'owned' rather than the 'demonic' variety of possession).

eg. Just the other day I was saying to the television...

I know saying 'my wife' is fairly similar, but seems more acceptable as

1) it indicates that there is only one

2) infers a degree of familiarity rather than distance

Can anyone clarify this oddity for me? I've never quite understood it.

Re: Long overdue

I won't disagree with you about waiting to see what they get up to before support them, but I think your other comments are wide of the mark, especially regarding Bruce's position on the matter.

Don't forget, it was BT Retail that was in bed with Phorm - there is no evidence to suggest that the other arms of the business were in cahoots (unless you are of the 'guilty until proven innocent' crowd).

I also have it on good authority that Bruce wasn't overly impressed over the whole Phorm debacle. If Bruce is complicit in any snooping stuff, it will be at the GCHQ level and he doesn't have a lot of choice about that.

Besides, he did actually leave BT and has had considerably more freedom to express his views since.
