El Reg Redesign - leave your comment here.

Sir Runcible Spoon
Unhappy

A nice parchment colour would be nice.

I've resisted commenting until I gave the design a chance to 'work on me' as it were, and I still dislike it.

Apart from the El Reg attitude and comments section, it now looks like any other site out there, covered in graphics and white space and hard to see what I want to read at a short glance.

However, it's hard to get to the El Reg attitude and comments sections if I don't actually read the stories in the first place.

I normally read around 50% of the stories on any given day, that's dropped to around 20% now as the site just feels less welcoming and familiar (being familiar shouldn't be considered bad btw).

Is this the 'new and improved' El Reg, the one where they change some of the key ingredients so it no longer tastes quite the same and your brand loyalty dwindles, letting in the supermarket chains with their cut-price equivalent that doesn't taste that much worse than the 'new and improved' old favourite?

I'll give it another month or so I expect, because I've gotten a lot out of the site over the years.

@Drew & Chris - I know you guys are doing your best, but I think you may have just pointed out to everyone in big bold (flashing) letters that you are media first, and the local rag second. Don't let the down-votes get you down, it's just the commentards way of saying they love you, but hate what you stand for :P

Nork-ribbing flick The Interview AXED: Sony caves under hack terror 'menace'

Sir Runcible Spoon

"Airing a film critical of the Norks on a day they HATE would've been a double-whammy."

I couldn't care less what the Norks think, but I think quite a few westerners probably feel that a Dec 25th release date was a bit tasteless.

Re: I call fake!!!!

From an AC source, one can never tell. You only have to go and look at some Youtube comments to realise the bar is set depressingly low.

Re: London 1970s....

That was before H&S and the litigation lawyers took over world though.

Re: I call fake!!!!

You did see those leaked emails from the Sony management team didn't you? Why would they do that to themselves?

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: Grow some balls!

I keep seeing references to the Norks sending a Nuke to the US, but I wasn't aware they had that capability. Citation required please.

UK cops caught using 12 MILLION Brits' mugshots on pic database

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: Explain to me

Except there are laws that cover those companies/agencies passing your personal details on to anyone else, and they certainly aren't going to be putting your mugshot through a series of checks to see if you mugged, raped and killed an old granny last week.

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: 12 million custody photographs

I think some of you have missed the bit where the copper said most of the photo's will have been of people who were innocent.

I see no connection between the interviews of only guilty people and the photo's of 12 million people.

Whilst you get a range of personality types for coppers (same as you do in regular jobs) the biggest problem is that the system they are forced to adhere to is skewed to encourage certain actions and priorities, unintentional consequences and all.

Most techies will recognise the Sales person who sells the unsupportable product/service just to get their commission which the techies then have to deliver - same kind of thing. If the logic isn't correct at the input stage, it sure as hell isn't going to give you the right answer at the output.

Sir Runcible Spoon
WTF?

Sir

One assumes that this will lead to pictures being used from social media sources at some point (if not already) which is very dodgy ground unless they are led there by a particular set of leads and information.

At some point, someone, somewhere, is getting paid money to process these pictures, which means they would be in breach of copyright if they don't have the copyright holders permission, doesn't it?

After all, making money from someone's creative work is an even more heinous crime than just making a copy for your own use apparently.

If all the victims and families of victims of the murderers, rapists and drug barons all pooled their spare cash together to create a powerful lobbying group then they might get something done.

Justice is a wonderful concept, but it's a theoretical situation that could only exist in a lab environment - not something you see in the wild.

Re: Nobody has answered the important question

Nah, you're thinking of a pulse laser.

A beam laser would sound like 'peeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww' until it overheated, but a full on military laser would be more like

"pwpwpwpwpwpw...................<wait for heat to drop>, rotate, pull up, line up 'pwpwpwpwpwpwpwp' <note incoming missile from second Viper> Activate ECM, rotate pull up 'pwpwpwpwpwpwpw..boom'.

Congratulations Commander.

Now you have 10 seconds to dock before the next Viper launches so you can sell your Slaves and Narcotics.

Alleged Silk Road boss's lawyers want murder-for-hire evidence blocked from trial

Sir Runcible Spoon

Re: why bother with the drugs trial at all?

There is only one 'conspiracy to commit murder' charge (not actual murder don't forget) yet there are probably hundreds of individual drug-related crimes he might be found guilty of.

In the US I think this means he can receive a sentence for each instance (rather than as one group of crimes).

Sir Runcible Spoon
WTF?

Sir

Finally, there's a "currently non-public matter" that they also want to discuss with the judge – the nature of which has been redacted from court documents – which will be addressed in a conference to be held on December 15.

Something to do with all those confiscated Bitcoins probably

For its part, the government has asked that Ulbricht's lawyers be barred from discussing the consequences for Ulbricht should he be convicted,

What, such as being made to work for the spooks?

and they also don't want the jury to hear about Ulbricht's personal beliefs regarding drug laws or regulation of online commerce, saying it could lead to an "erroneous assumption that good motive is inconsistent with criminal intent.

So on the one hand they want to include evidence relating to an offence that he hasn't been convicted of (yet) but they don't want the jury to understand the guys motives and thought processes? Are they expecting an insanity plea or something if the jury hear what the guy really thinks? Or are they frightened the jury might think he has a point in some way?

Here's your cake, enjoy.

Feast your eyes: 10 'fortysomething' smart TVs

Re: Dumb TV please

@HMB, I might be using some tinted specs here, but I didn't say that the *picture* quality was better - some of the stuff on my Samsung D8000 is jaw dropping.

However, no matter what settings I use, playback of the Blu-Ray 'I Superbiker' which pans across landscape very fast is almost unwatchable. My wife complains about HD making films look more like documentaries, it seems to have lost some it's warmth.

When you watch some of the old movies that have soft-focus etc. they tend to draw you in more on an emotional level than something that is so crisp you can hear the scenery crackle.

There's a place for both I'm sure, but I don't seem to be getting many options for the older style of viewing where the content trumps the presentation. I suppose for me it's more about the experience rather than the technical abilities of the device I'm watching it on - and for some things they just don't work very well.

I haven't tried plasma ever since I had a set that was so shiny any kind of light source in the room used to make it act like a mirror, something that seems to be happening with these LCD's/LED's too now I think about it. Where are the matt screens?

Re: Dumb TV please

I would also like a TV that can play fast moving action scenes with artifacts or requiring a degree is TV menu system configuration (which only reduces it).

100Hz CRT's, whilst not scaling to larger sizes very easily, delivered a better overall picture in my opinion.

What's the point of seeing the hair on someones wart when you get taken out of the moment by some kind of 'oh dear I can't keep up and keep things clear at the same time' moment from one of these so-called smart tv's?

They're shit. Just my opinion of course and I'm still on my first coffee, but I'll probably stand by that statement when I'm >50% human again.

Exactly. Someone who is famous for what they do, rather than who they are, is to be cherished and respected.

I get all I want from Randall via his comics and now his book, long may it continue. If I met him in the street and recognised him I wouldn't say hello, it would just be a nice thing to mention when I got home.

Not like when I saw Vic Reeves on the tube one evening. I made a deliberate effort to completely ignore him no matter what he did to try and attract some attention and recognition (as opposed to leaving him alone out of respect). That must have hurt :)

It was a tongue in cheek comment, I'm sure there is stress everywhere you go on this planet, Thailand being no exception. I have been there so I'm not completely ignorant, but I take your point :)

However, my point was that if you were feeling a bit stressed you could always find a little 'relief' for not very much outlay.
