The Hound of Hounslow: No $40m Wall Street wobbler

Feedback

Software systems that will change the markets they run in should get a feedback analysis; they should be looked at like some sort of servo system which can oscillate or (with positive feedback) wildy run away.

Position (price), Rate and Acceleration analysis should check for possible problems.

Noble origins

I think that he was convincing as a Count (Dracula or Dooku) as his mother was a Contessa, and he met with some of Russian nobles after their exile.

PHOTON SPACE SAIL successfully Kickstarted into orbit

tony2heads
Boffin

Re: Efficiency

I think the sail would work better if it used the solar wind (at least in the inner solar system) but you would probably need to keep it charged. Since the bulk momentum from the solar wind will be from +ve charge protons you could keep the sail positively charged by electrically attaching it to an beta particle emitting radioisotope; perhaps Nickel-63.

Anyone want to set up a crowd funding for that idea?

In a galaxy far, far, far away ... Farthest ever star system discovered

tony2heads
Boffin

Re: ...

Evidence is that, long long ago the young galaxies were wild places with loads galaxy merging, lots of star formation, with massive young stars running through their lives really quickly and exploding; a bit like the teenage years of the universe

Now star formation has really quietened down, galaxy mergers are rare; a bit like middle age. A few galaxies (like Messier 82) still have rapid star formation, but they are going through a mid-life crisis; in that case probably started by that nearby attractive spiral of Messier 81.

'few Geeks running Linux'

the box I an using now is running Linux, but was bought with Win7 on it as the OEM only had that.

Also the geeks tend to run a lot of Linux, as we have a few dozen servers and loads of (single board) hardware controllers running it, so it was simpler to unify the OS across platforms.

For many web-based applications the OS makes no difference at all, just don't use IE for them
