Foxtel choked on 65,000 new sign-ups to watch Game of Thrones

Daniel Voyce

Baby steps

I think Foxtel Now is a decent step towards providing a decent cord cutting service but this should have been foreseen and mitigated. The big problem overall with these kind of services is that now we are living in a world where we have (for the most part) an open internet that can provide instant gratification on pretty much everything, so therefore we expect to be able to view anything we want immediately, I would say that most people are happy to pay to be able to do this with little hassle.

Foxtel does a really good job of bringing the majority of big shows to Australia either at the same time as it is aired in the US / UK (or within a few hours of it), the problem on all of these services (both cable and streaming) is licensing. Until everything is available in one place under one reasonable subscription then Piracy will keep happening.

For example: In order for me to cover most of what I want to watch I pay for Foxtel Cable, Hulu, Netflix and Crunchyroll, this is probably close to $200 AUD per month, I don't mind paying for this as all of them produce decent content from my subscriptions, but there are still items that aren't shown on any available streaming service that I have to download in order to be able to watch or wait 2 years for them to be released on one of the above services, and once you get into setting up things like Sonarr to manage these for you, the ease of piracy vs trying to get something legally starts to become a draw!

Australian oppn. leader wants to do something about Bitcoin, because terrorism and crypto

Facepalm

Why do these people continue to open their mouths about things they simply don't understand?

The whole Australian government is a joke when it comes to technology understanding, hell, our prime minister is the guy who managed to shaft the public on the NBN as communications minister.

It's 2017, we should have specific people in high level government / the cabinet with proven knowledge and preferably qualifications in Technology and only allow these people to talk about technology rather than allowing the 2 most senior politicians to sound like my Nan talking about "that infernal machine"

Do you use .home and .mail on your network? ICANN mulls .corp, .mail, .home dot-word domains

Yep and if you use it for local development and have a mac on your network it takes upwards of 30 seconds for whatever magic packets that get routed that way to get rejected so the rest of the request can continue! Learnt that the hard way!

UK to block Kodi pirates in real-time: Saturday kick-off

Daniel Voyce

Wait

So Kodi apps often just links to live streams on various "Live Streaming" websites - are the ISP's planning on blocking all of these websites just because football is on? I use them, a lot for things not related to anything sporting and would be massively pissed off if my access was restricted to them because of it?

Stay out of my server room!

Daniel Voyce

Re: Piggin 'eck

haha I just posted something similar, except mine was 12 x 1kg containers of Beef mince! smh

Daniel Voyce
FAIL

Server room - dont you mean Fridge?

Yeah I'm not even exaggerating here, I got some temperature warnings from our Modest server room (it was basically a 6 x 12ft studded walled off area with an air-conditioner in it that had a border line thermal profile vs the BTU of the aircon unit, the downstairs had a lot of CD burning robots in there and in summer the whole of the downstairs block got pretty warm.

So I ambled downstairs to see if someone had left the door open, I walked in to the server room to find about 12kg of mince sitting on top of the Tower RAID we had built (that co-incidentally had a top exhaust fan).

There was apparently no room in the office Fridge and this was the next coolest place....

Pair programming – you'll never guess what happens next!

Daniel Voyce

There are times it works and times it doesn't

Working through a difficult problem with someone who has a different mind set from you is a great way to get the guts of a problem hashed out - doing it 100% of the time would just be painful!

I probably spend about 10-20% of my time pairing with people when we have a hard problem to get done, once the direction is clear and the hard problems are overcome then the coder can get on with the implementation - this seems sensible!

nbn™ says nobody needs gigabit internet, trumpets XG-Fast at 8Gbps anyway

Re: State of the copper?

I watched a Telstra engineer outside my friends house open one of those little man hole covers on the street, pull out a standard grey supermarket plastic carrier bag with a complete mess of wires in it - connect up some kind of multi-meter (while on the phone) to each wire individually - I assume to locate the correct one, cut-recrimp and re-wrap in the bag and dump back in the hole.

If this is the technology that is to run our future internet then I want nothing to do with it!

IBM botched geo-block designed to save Australia's census

Daniel Voyce

I call bullshit on this

I agree that there was a DDoS, one that the census bureau instigated by telling the whole of Australia to go online and complete it in basically a 4 hour window. I don't believe there was an external DDoS (the fact that security traffic tracking websites showed no abnormal external traffic coming in backs this up), I believe they just screwed up by asking 15+ millon people to go online simultaneously!

New Gnome emerges blinking into the sunlight

Daniel Voyce

Re: It's still smartphone-GUI-on-a-workstation.

I'm running linux in a VM and Cinnamon and MATE both completely crap out without a proper 3D native device! Cinnamon feels bloated but it is by far the best looking of the GNOME forks and was my choice when running Ubuntu Natively. I am currently having to use gnome flashback on Ubuntu and its an acceptable evil, not horrifically ugly but also pretty speedy!

HP Inc's rinky-dink ink stink: Unofficial cartridges, official refills spurned by printer DRM

Daniel Voyce

I went printer shopping the other day

$70 for a pretty decent and compact Epsom all in one, price of a full set of standard replacement cartridges - $117.

Who can blame manufacturers trying to keep this revenue stream? Id much rather spend more money on a printer than them trying to recoup the costs through cartridges, that or keep going to Officeworks here in Aus for 3c per page prints....

nbn™ talks up HFC upgrades to gigabit speed

Daniel Voyce

NBN Timing is a joke

We are literally having to move offices because we cant even get a reasonably priced stable internet of a high enough speed to perform a 720p webinar, the only option we have is a microwave connection link that will cost 1000's to install and a bucket a month! NBN isn't due in near the office area for another 2 years (Zone 1 of Melbourne Metro).

Installing an already obsolete technology isn't big and it isn't clever.

Oz boffins cook quantum computing out of mothballs

Daniel Voyce
Gimp

Impressive

I am not in any way any kind of Quantum computing boffin but this sounds like a huge first step towards realistic "In my study" Quantum computers.

Early days it could be as an analogue to the old C64 tapes, except loading in a "cartridge" of consumable Quantum substrate.

Telstra's 'future of medical diagnosis' needs just 5Mbps

Daniel Voyce

FTTN simply cant work!

I watched a Telstra womble <airquotes>"fixing"</airquotes> a node the other week, he started off by removing the manhole cover, then to my complete astonishment untied and unwrapped 3 standard grey supermarket bags that were holding what I could only describe as the Kowloon Walled City expressed as a series of wires. He then proceeded to test some wires with a multimeter, got some black tape out, connected a few of them together, re-wrapped the Coles carrier bags around the kraken of wires and called the job in complete.

This is what is running the future of broadband in Australia on 90% of the streets (you know - when it gets installed 5 years in the future), the suburb wasn't particularly old, definitely wasn't what you would call "Out in the sticks" (St Kilda East in Melbourne).

Chrome OS to get Android apps via the magic of containers

Daniel Voyce

I hope this gets open sourced

Since NHL.TV changed their platform mid season they basically wrote off Linux as a supported platform, however it still works on Android! This is one of many cases of vendors dropping support (for whatever reason) for Linux, however these vendors usually have perfectly serviceable mobile apps - if this gets ported into Chrome / Chromium (or someone cobbles something together) then I think Linux as a platform will be a whole lot richer for it!

Android in a container though should be pretty easy to accomplish now I guess?

Big Content seeks to ban Kickass Torrents from Australia

Daniel Voyce
Megaphone

Living here

I can confirm it is nigh on impossible to get anything either at a reasonable time, price or quality in Australia! Our Netflix is crippled, local offerings are complete toss, when we do get releases they are often weeks to months behind the US & UK, everything else online is "Not available in your country" and when we do try and do at least a partially good thing (such as pay for US Netflix or Hulu) there are no edge servers available anywhere near us so even on my shiny new (maximum for the next 10 years because "foresight") 50Mb/s connection it buffers every 20 seconds when anyone in the USA is available.

So they wonder why its easier to click a single icon on a website and get near instantaneous downloads when they make it so fucking difficult to procure anything legally and easily!

Would you let cops give your phone a textalyzer scan after a road crash?

Daniel Voyce

Same reason as this - would having navigation on the phone consist "usage", what about streaming radio? Far too ambiguous to trust that any police officer could accurately say "this is the cause of it", you want my data then subpoena the network and see if there are any corresponding outgoing calls / SMS, if you want to look at the rest of it then get a warrant.

Here's a great idea: Let's make a gun that looks like a mobile phone

Daniel Voyce

Re: "Absolutely no one can make sense of the United States' infatuation with firearms."

Sure I get that - I live in Australia and we have guns for exactly the same reason over here (Roo's, Drop Bears etc), they are tools of the trade, all licenced and pretty easily obtainable with the correct paperwork, what we don't have is people (other than the police) walking around with 9mm strapped to their jeans in restaurants.

Sourceforge is awful, up until this year it was basically malware distribution and their other monetization techniques were questionable at best (Devshare anyone? https://sourceforge.net/blog/today-we-offer-devshare-beta-a-sustainable-way-to-fund-open-source-software).

Although things seem to be getting better with the new owners a large chunk of the stuff on there was long ago abandoned for Github and the likes, I don't think it will ever regain the trust of a lot of the Open Source community.

Linux Mint forums hacked: All users urged to reset passwords

Daniel Voyce

"Dont use the same password"

I actually don't agree with this,

Use the same semi-crappy password, ideally with a spare email address on sites that don't hold the keys to your kingdom (forums, pointless sign ups etc), - use good, unique passwords on things that do (email, hosting, truecrypt etc)

On all of the breaches so far that I have had details on (3 of them - Adobe, Moneybookers and this one) they are only details I am really not fussed about losing, may as well do 123456!

Re: Here is the link to the consultation

One of the Articles above states:

"You can disable SU access in Super Su" and payments will work as expected, a minor inconvenience...

So all someone needs to do is allow some kind of Quick Shortcut for this in the notifications and it really isn't an issue, I'd like it as a backup, contactless is used heavily over here in Aus and it would be great to not have to carry my wallet around at times when it would be a pain (e.g. out running and stopping for coffee / breakfast afterwards) - I usually have my phone strapped to me!

GitHub: We're sorry (again) about (another) outage

Daniel Voyce

Re: Surely..

The problem is that tools such as Composer, Bundle, Pip, Bower etc can all be hooked in to use github repositories and developers / DevOps somehow think it is acceptable to have these things "built on deployment" only to realise that if that service doesnt exist many of these tools dont handle that failure well and you end up with a broken deployment.

CI would prevent this in most cases but I have seen just as many poorly implemented CI systems as I have crappy deployment mechanisms, PEBCAC.

Angry devs hit out at JetBrains over shift to subscription pricing

Daniel Voyce

I am torn

I really rate Jetbrains (Like Wax Lyrical over their IDE's), but the subscription model for things like Adobe came about because individuals who couldnt afford the £3k for the master suite of products were just pirating it. I'm sure Jetbrains has the same problems but their products aren't expensive, I mean for just over $100 you get IDE's that blow anything else out of the water featurewise (Note: I am aware that an IDE is a highly personal thing... my point isn't to start an elitist war on "My dev environment is better than yours").

I do however understand the pricing model for polyglot teams / developers who maybe dont want to spend around $400 each year to upgrade when they can get the whole lot (and maybe a few other products they just couldnt justify on cost means) for around $20 a month!

My main worry is it would cause apathy within Jetbrains development in creating new features for the IDE's when they know they have guaranteed income from it each month...

Deluded Aussie geeks hail Turnbull's elevation to prime minister

Daniel Voyce

NBN wont win long term (infact it is already losing out)

I have lived here for 3 years now and as soon as I arrived I heard plenty about how the NBN was going to change the future for Australia's internet, quite simply, it isn't. As The Reg has pointed out many times they are taking years to install an inferior product, by the time the roll out is completed they will already be behind the rest of the developed world.

However what this does mean is that private companies are providing super fast internet into the basement of all of these new apartment blocks / office buildings that are cropping up off the plan, they are also installing into multi tenancy buildings and more recently have done some "Line of sight" wizardry with the office I work in out in the burbs (NBN isn't planned here for another 5 years), we pay reasonable rates are get a 100Mbps (vs the 6Mbps we can currently get over copper). I dont see anyway they can keep up.

Bloke clicks GitHub 'commit' button in Visual Studio, gets slapped with $6,500 AWS bill

Daniel Voyce

Re: This is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night

You can set limits on what an AWS IAM key does, it sounds like he has put in a root IAM key into his code which basically gives full control over things like this when all he possibly wanted was to be able to access an S3 bucket.

There are also perfectly valid use cases where one might want to spin up a huge memory instance and then shut it down after a job completes, that is one of the benefits of AWS is that it can respond to changing conditions - having a confirmation required in each of these cases simply wouldn't be possible - hence why you can create different keys with different permissions.

IAM is extremely flexible, unfortunately it cant protect from stupidity.
