Baby steps

I think Foxtel Now is a decent step towards providing a decent cord cutting service but this should have been foreseen and mitigated. The big problem overall with these kind of services is that now we are living in a world where we have (for the most part) an open internet that can provide instant gratification on pretty much everything, so therefore we expect to be able to view anything we want immediately, I would say that most people are happy to pay to be able to do this with little hassle.

Foxtel does a really good job of bringing the majority of big shows to Australia either at the same time as it is aired in the US / UK (or within a few hours of it), the problem on all of these services (both cable and streaming) is licensing. Until everything is available in one place under one reasonable subscription then Piracy will keep happening.

For example: In order for me to cover most of what I want to watch I pay for Foxtel Cable, Hulu, Netflix and Crunchyroll, this is probably close to $200 AUD per month, I don't mind paying for this as all of them produce decent content from my subscriptions, but there are still items that aren't shown on any available streaming service that I have to download in order to be able to watch or wait 2 years for them to be released on one of the above services, and once you get into setting up things like Sonarr to manage these for you, the ease of piracy vs trying to get something legally starts to become a draw!

So Kodi apps often just links to live streams on various "Live Streaming" websites - are the ISP's planning on blocking all of these websites just because football is on? I use them, a lot for things not related to anything sporting and would be massively pissed off if my access was restricted to them because of it?

I think if this was running a reasonable distro of Linux id buy one to simply have in hand for those times I am on the move and my phone would be too awkward to Get Stuff Done™

There are times it works and times it doesn't

Working through a difficult problem with someone who has a different mind set from you is a great way to get the guts of a problem hashed out - doing it 100% of the time would just be painful!

I probably spend about 10-20% of my time pairing with people when we have a hard problem to get done, once the direction is clear and the hard problems are overcome then the coder can get on with the implementation - this seems sensible!

Check out appear.in as an alternative with no client, its more stable than hangouts on slower networks in my experience! Only needs a modern browser, have been running all of my conference calls in it for the past 4 months!

I call bullshit on this

I agree that there was a DDoS, one that the census bureau instigated by telling the whole of Australia to go online and complete it in basically a 4 hour window. I don't believe there was an external DDoS (the fact that security traffic tracking websites showed no abnormal external traffic coming in backs this up), I believe they just screwed up by asking 15+ millon people to go online simultaneously!

I went printer shopping the other day

$70 for a pretty decent and compact Epsom all in one, price of a full set of standard replacement cartridges - $117.

Who can blame manufacturers trying to keep this revenue stream? Id much rather spend more money on a printer than them trying to recoup the costs through cartridges, that or keep going to Officeworks here in Aus for 3c per page prints....

NBN Timing is a joke

We are literally having to move offices because we cant even get a reasonably priced stable internet of a high enough speed to perform a 720p webinar, the only option we have is a microwave connection link that will cost 1000's to install and a bucket a month! NBN isn't due in near the office area for another 2 years (Zone 1 of Melbourne Metro).

Installing an already obsolete technology isn't big and it isn't clever.

I watched a Telstra womble <airquotes>"fixing"</airquotes> a node the other week, he started off by removing the manhole cover, then to my complete astonishment untied and unwrapped 3 standard grey supermarket bags that were holding what I could only describe as the Kowloon Walled City expressed as a series of wires. He then proceeded to test some wires with a multimeter, got some black tape out, connected a few of them together, re-wrapped the Coles carrier bags around the kraken of wires and called the job in complete.

This is what is running the future of broadband in Australia on 90% of the streets (you know - when it gets installed 5 years in the future), the suburb wasn't particularly old, definitely wasn't what you would call "Out in the sticks" (St Kilda East in Melbourne).

Since NHL.TV changed their platform mid season they basically wrote off Linux as a supported platform, however it still works on Android! This is one of many cases of vendors dropping support (for whatever reason) for Linux, however these vendors usually have perfectly serviceable mobile apps - if this gets ported into Chrome / Chromium (or someone cobbles something together) then I think Linux as a platform will be a whole lot richer for it!

Sourceforge is awful, up until this year it was basically malware distribution and their other monetization techniques were questionable at best (Devshare anyone? https://sourceforge.net/blog/today-we-offer-devshare-beta-a-sustainable-way-to-fund-open-source-software).

Although things seem to be getting better with the new owners a large chunk of the stuff on there was long ago abandoned for Github and the likes, I don't think it will ever regain the trust of a lot of the Open Source community.

I actually don't agree with this,

Use the same semi-crappy password, ideally with a spare email address on sites that don't hold the keys to your kingdom (forums, pointless sign ups etc), - use good, unique passwords on things that do (email, hosting, truecrypt etc)

I am torn

I really rate Jetbrains (Like Wax Lyrical over their IDE's), but the subscription model for things like Adobe came about because individuals who couldnt afford the £3k for the master suite of products were just pirating it. I'm sure Jetbrains has the same problems but their products aren't expensive, I mean for just over $100 you get IDE's that blow anything else out of the water featurewise (Note: I am aware that an IDE is a highly personal thing... my point isn't to start an elitist war on "My dev environment is better than yours").

I do however understand the pricing model for polyglot teams / developers who maybe dont want to spend around $400 each year to upgrade when they can get the whole lot (and maybe a few other products they just couldnt justify on cost means) for around $20 a month!

My main worry is it would cause apathy within Jetbrains development in creating new features for the IDE's when they know they have guaranteed income from it each month...

NBN wont win long term (infact it is already losing out)

I have lived here for 3 years now and as soon as I arrived I heard plenty about how the NBN was going to change the future for Australia's internet, quite simply, it isn't. As The Reg has pointed out many times they are taking years to install an inferior product, by the time the roll out is completed they will already be behind the rest of the developed world.

However what this does mean is that private companies are providing super fast internet into the basement of all of these new apartment blocks / office buildings that are cropping up off the plan, they are also installing into multi tenancy buildings and more recently have done some "Line of sight" wizardry with the office I work in out in the burbs (NBN isn't planned here for another 5 years), we pay reasonable rates are get a 100Mbps (vs the 6Mbps we can currently get over copper). I dont see anyway they can keep up.
