Title ye not

> "government taking more control of the Internet to protect its freedom"

But they are! Its just that the government has a different definition of "freedom" to every one else. Much like they have their own definition for "terrorist", "spy", "whistle-blower" and "journalist".

*Facepalm*

"Ever wonder what the H is in H2O?"

OK Einstein, how do you get the H out of the H2O? That's right, with electricity! If you need 30% of the energy required to extract the H from the H2O to compress the gas, then a hydrogen fuelled car will be 70% as efficient as a battery car.

Maybe not 5 minutes yet ....

But there are commercial chargers already out there that will do it in less then 10. Typical range for an EV at the moment is about 150 miles, double or treble that and get the charge times to below 5 minutes and there'll be no appreciable difference between taking a long journey in an EV vehicle or a petrol one.

Don't need to swap the batteries people.

The technology already exists to fast-charge automotive batteries. Current technology batteries can be charged to 80% capacity in less than 10 minutes. Here's a link for the unbelievers: http://evsolutions.avinc.com/products/public_charging/#public_charging_a

Oh goodie, a labour / tory argument.... I'll just chime in with my tuppeny worth

Labour may have their faults (and I'd be the first in line to see Tony hanged for war crimes and Gordon locked up for massive economic fraud) but if you think the Tories are here to benefit anyone posting on these forms you're suffering from clinical-grade delusions. If they could figure out a way to reintroduce a serf class for their Eton chums we'd all find ourselves working for gruel and shelter tomorrow.

WIll this end windows as an industrial os?

I didn't think about this until your post, but I've worked in a windows heavy industrial environment where downtime is costed in the millions per day. I think a scenario where PLCs can be infected by a virus from a windows machine will quite frankly terrify some project managers.

Wouldn't it be funny if the Stuxnet virus was the thing to end windows as an industrial OS?

Doubly hilarious if it used backdoors installed into windows by the US government :D

here you go:

I put it to you the reason we don't hear about more leaks or accidents is that most sea going nukes are run by the military, and they are quite good at keeping stuff like that secret.

Risk analysis

Yes, because there's never ever been a major accident in ANY modern industrial complex run by a western company because every thing is engineered so well now.... Hello? Deep water horizon called you say? Massive contamination was it? Ah, thanks for the update.

As with the Deep Water Horizon, the Piper Alpha and Chernobyl the safety systems were disabled by human beings. No matter how clever the system is there will be a human dumb enough to bypass it. Although modern safety systems make the possibility of an accident very small, if the severity means that an area the size of Scotland has to be evacuated the risk is just not worth it to a lot of people.

Scale fail

Aye, I wondered about that too. Quick calculation gives 2.2^23 atoms (of aluminium) in a square centimetre - which is slightly more than a terabyte. 10^9 atoms would be a cube 28 microns across, which I'm not sure would even be visible to the naked eye...

and the rest..

India gets £250 million annual development assistance from the UK. Perhaps if the 1st world countries stopped giving aid to such a corrupt government, the population would revolt and insanities like funding their own space program while a large percentage of their population literally starved would end.

dpg21
Thumb Down

I dont think so.

You make it sound like the the Indian government has 'forgotten' about its poor people, when the opposite is actually the case. The Indian ruling cast is quite deliberately starving its own people, whom it sees as 'unclean'. All the aid from the UK is doing is helping to support the Indian governments practices instead of actually helping the poor of India.

Moral panic indeed

Look, in these hard times some departments budgets are being slashed and staff are being cut back to the bone. How is a minister these days to expand their empire and get their face in the papers if they don't exploit some children?

DAB fine radio

I like my DAB radio too. The FM reception in my area means that there's a fair amount of hiss and crackle on my analogue radio, where as the DAB one is crystal clear. The hiss is not too bad when your listening to music, but it used to drive me mad when I was listening to radio 4.

So tell me, in this ID card nirvana of yours do the police get to take away ID cards of 'trouble makers'? A very, very effective form of population control is to take away access to doctors, hospitals or banks on the whim of a police officer. No judges or courts or appeals.

Ramjet

The original design of Concorde was for two of its four engines to be ramjets, which would have given it incredible range and fuel economy. That plan was scrapper in part due to a new Labour government at the time. Make's you want to weep, eh?
