Foreshadow and Intel SGX software attestation: 'The whole trust model collapses'

You do realize that the researchers interviewed here - those how discovered the 'Foreshadow' flow in *Intel* CPUs - are Israelis, right?

I'm not trying to downplay the 'Ryzenfall' scam by 'CTS labs' or whatever they called themselves. But let's not start with conspiracy theories.

Ah... no, they don't undergo a mandatory self-defence course. The reason that women go jogging alone is because the streets of most cities in Israel are safe. Actually the only relatively unsafe area that I'm aware of is a small region in southern Tel-Aviv where many illegal immigrants from Africa reside.

Re: The Lemming fixation with startup times....

The Win8 'fast startup' is actually a return from hibernation, only you are not told about it.

That fact made me spend a while trying to find a bug in a device driver I was working on. Apparently, being back from hibernation, it did not go through the 'Miniport Loaded' state as the driver was already loaded. Which is pretty obvious if you know that.

Next time I will RTFM.

Re: Anyone else bored by these crybabies yet?

Not so easy...

I bought an unlocked phone. However since it is not a Nexus, it is uncertain whether it will be getting future updates. However the Nexus devices are not for everybody. The GNex, for example, has no support for SD cards, has a screen which in my opinion is sub-par compared to the GS2, etc etc.

Why can't we have it both ways? Give me a decent hardware and Nexus-level software support, and I will recommend all of my friends to buy that.

amehaye

Hear hear. My Galaxy S2 just got its ICS. And Samsung hint there will be no JB for it, even though similarly spec-ed devices (Nexus S, GNex) did get JB.

Hear me Samsung: I don't care for your TouchWiz. Give me the kernel sources, along with all the drivers binary blobs for JB and I will be very content with CM10.

If however you choose not to release kernel sources, you will lose me as a customer. And everybody that listens to my advice. Do the wise thing. Keep your customers happy.

Re: Flops mission is complete.

The lower Nokia shares go, the cheaper it is for Microsoft to buy Nokia.

Microsoft has shown recently that they are going the Apple way of developing their own hardware (and Google might also go that way with their recent acquisition of Motorola). Buying Nokia would go a long way towards that goal.

Behind Microsoft's $15 Samsung Android royalty claim

amehaye
FAIL

What they doin? Simple.

This is not a question of whether Android is legit. This is a question of who has more patents in his war chest. Whether these patents are valid is of no importance.

Right now Google has next to empty war chest, whereas Microsoft has dozens of patent-full war chests. If Google goes to battle now they will loose.

Google tried to amend the situation somewhat with the Nortel bid. However, they lost and are now it a worse position.

Fail, because the patent system has failed us all.

Microsoft bags two more Android patent deals

amehaye
FAIL

Google woke up to late

They failed to mass patents, and now they have no ammunition in the patent war. If they tried to go on Microsoft now they would lose.

Google's lack of a patent war chest is why they go after Nortel's patent portfolio. Even though Microsoft are protected against those specific patents, having licensed them, it will go towards strengthening Google's positioning in the global patent war.

We live in a sad state of affairs when it is more important to have as many patents as possible rather than actually innovate. It is even sadder that trivial patents are allowed to exist.

Microsoft+IE9: Holier than Apple open web convert?

amehaye
Gates Horns

Embrace, Extend, Extinguish

We are merely at the first stage. With the abundance of mobile devices not running Windows, and the rise of standards-supporting browsers, Microsoft had no choice but to adhere to standards.

They do not do that out of the love of consumers. Rather they hope to re-capture the crowds, then slowly and subtly lock them in again.

That said, as long as MS remains a niche mobile platform, they would find it hard to move to the second stage, as web sites have to be compatible on all platforms. Of course, if Apple continues to cripple its mobile browser, compatibility might not matter that much. Then again, with the rise of Android, it will be even more difficult for MS to 'Extend'.

It would be nice to have a devil Jobs here as well, but there is place here for only one icon.

Intel commits $10bn to buybacks, juices dividend

Buy back is good only for the top brass

Usually the bonuses of the high-rank management are tied to both earnings per share and the value of each share, on the premise that increase in these means that the company performs better.

Buybacks *artificially* increase these figures without any actual improvement in the situation of the company. The big corporate bosses use this trick to enhance their salaries.

They should have given it all as a dividend.

Israel and US fingered for Stuxnet attack on Iran

amehaye
WTF?

Stolen land

Israel is not a stolen land. You can check the facts, it is written in the history books. Let me summarize it for you:

Before the state of Israel was formed, Jews bought land from inhabitants of then (pre 1948) Palestine. In 1948 Israel was announced and immediately attacked by all neighboring (and some non-neighboring) arab nations. 'Palestinian' arabs attacked Israel as well. As things went Israel won this war.

Later a similar course of events happened in 1967 in the war known as the six days war. Israel won again and obtained more areas of the land which used to be known as Israel in ancient times.

Then again in 1972. Israel was in bad shape in that war but prevailed in the end.

Now the way I see it, if you buy land it belongs to you. If you win it in a war which was forced(!) on you, it belongs to you. Aggressors should know that when they attack you they might lose.

All this land belonged to the ancient Israelites of which we are the descendants. We were expelled from our land about two thousand years ago and the land was taken from us. So we actually bought and defended a land which was our land to begin with.

----------------

Now just to clarify. I do not like violence. I do not hate the Palestines. In fact I would be very happy if we had peace and could build a nice place to live in, for all of us.

My sister, who is a medical doctor, saved the life of countless Palestinian children. Many of them come to Israel to get decent treatment. A Palestinian doctor is working with her at the hospital. Three of his daughters were killed in the last confrontation in Gaza. I wish they were not.

You can blame the IDF for accidentally shooting them down. You can blame the Hamas for starting this whole deal. In fact Hamas accidentally killed more than a few Palestinians in that war. In war things like that happen all the time. This is the situation we live in. Now deal with it.

amehaye

"Exploitation"

Dude you need to look at the maps. Seriously. Do it now. Do you see Israel? Do you see our neighbors? Cut away the Palestinian territories from the Israel area. Check how much land Israel has and how much land the Arab countries have.

Now tell me who exploits who.

amehaye

Here we go again

Israel is a terrorist nation, Palestines are innocent farmers. Up is down, left is right. Heard that already, please give me something new.

Small reminder. Israel sent suicide bombers to kill innocent Palestine men, women and children. No, wait. It was the other way around. The Palestines sent suicide bombers to rip apart young unsuspecting children not 300 yards from where I live. And there were many, many others.

There, now it sounds more like reality.
